I am in the minority on this I think, but I've always felt like there's one person who knows the truth that nobody ever talks about. Uncle Benjen. It seems logical to me that Ned would be passing the torch of Jon's protection to Benjen by sending Jon to the wall. Ned would think he may never see Jon again, so it stands to reason that he would tell Benjen the truth. Sort of like "if anything happens to me, you need to know x,y,z. Protect Jon at all costs". Benjen and Lyanna were best friends, so Benjen could be trusted with the truth. Also, Benjen shares a scene with Jon when he goes to Winterfell for the feast that I feel supports this idea of him knowing the truth. Jon says he's ready to swear the Night's Watch oath. Then the following ensues. Benjen says ,"You don't understand what you'd be giving up. We have no families. None of us will ever father sons". Jon says he doesn't care about that, and Benjen responds, "You might, if you knew what that meant". That has always spoke volumes to me about Benjen's knowledge of Jon's paternity. I'm also thinking Benjen played a role in assisting Lyanna and Rhaegar hide and marry, and either out of guilt or punishment by Ned, he was sent to the wall. But that's a separate discussion lol.

Talking Thrones That's how I take it. It also explains his reluctance to allow Jon to go on rangings. Sure, being the best recruit doesn't give you the right to go on a ranging, but if Benjen knows the truth, would you really let a future king go out beyond the wall? Or would you steer him towards another position, one that "grooms him for command"? Varys did the same with "Aegon"; grooming him to understand that ruling (in Jon's case commanding) is a duty, not a birth right.

I still have doubts that Rhaegar gave the roses to Lyanna at the tournament because of his love for her. Rhaegar was an honorable man. Honorable men DO NOT disrespect their wives in public, in such a heartless way as Rhaegar did unless there's something else going on than just "love" between Rhaegar and Lyanna. Regardless of how much Rhaegar may have loved Lyanna, he did care for Ilia. He wouldn't do that to her. It's to heartless and dishonorable. Even if Ilia allowed Rhaegar another wife, to dishonor her at the tournament would have been unlikely considering Rhaegar character(or what we know of it) unless something else was going on.

not a bad fan theory but if I may add to this, maybe Rhaegar wanted 3 children to live up to his 3 headed dragon prophecy and Elia couldn't give him a 3rd child, the Maesters would have advised against it just in case the pregnancy put her life at risk. Rhaegar, being the good person he is didn't want to put his wife's life at risk and so fell for Lyanna who Elia would have deemed worthy as a second wife for Rhaegar and so they secretly marry and have Jon aka Aegon Targaryan

And instead of stopping her, he helped her escape Winterfell without being noticed. And once he realized what his actions had put in motion he decided to take the black once the war was over and Ned had returned; as punishment for his sins.

There is a third option which people don't tend to talk about. And that's the possibility that Rhaegar seduced Lyanna with the consent of his wife, Elia. This would be well within Rhaegar's skillset and he would do it if necessity called for it. Crowning Lyanna in front of the most important people in Westeros is an incredibly silly thing to do even if you are in love. However, if you wanted to convince someone of your intentions(in Rhaegar's case Lyanna) you would do so with a grand show of affection. I think Rhaegar knew he had to make that child at all costs. Rhaegar could've just as easily called out the name of his wife, Elia before he was slain. Which would've enraged Robert even more.

Doesn't matter who Ned is. Arthur Dayne is well known as one of the most honorable Knights of his time, and Rhaegar's best friends. Rhaegar had no way of knowing Ned would reach lyana, especially without Robert beside him. So Arthur would've been ordered to kill anyone trying to enter the tower, anyone. Rhaegar being dead makes no difference to Arthur, he is honor-bound to defend that tower.

I don't see any other way for the events behind Rhaegar and Lyanna to be explained other than Bran actually seeing it. I think once Bran gets to Winterfell, he will want to find out the rest of the story. I actually think that Bran's flashback of the Tourney at Harrenhal will last at least 2 episodes. I think it is critical for the audience to see this event, especially since it has been confirmed that we will not have a Robert's Rebellion series. I'm actually pumped for this, the Tourney at Harrenhal is probably one of the most significant events in the world of ASOIAF.

Targaryens didn't practice polygamy though. The Faith had labeled it illegal, and gave Targaryens some privileges, by looking the other way, when they married their siblings, but polygamy was illegal, and Targs hadn't practiced it in hundreds of years.

Ellia* There is no doubting, that Rhaegar chose to run away with Lyanna because there needed to be 3 heads of the dragon, who he believed would be his 3 children, and Ellia was having trouble with pregnancy and unable to bear a 3rd healthy child. MAYBE Ellia was okay with that, but I wouldn't think so. Also, if Aegon, the young Griff, was going to appear in the show, he would have done so already. There simply isn't enough screen time left in the series to introduce him, and make it worth while to the show. Besides, it would make more sense for the television series to make Jon the hero, as it is what most fans expect, at this point. I personally like the theory that GRRM is having Jon be the great hero Azor Ahai for the TV series, but that Aegon in the books, is in fact the child of Lyanna and Rhaegar, an illegitimate bastard, presented as Rhaegar's true son, to put him on the throne. But that's the best part of GRRM's work, all we can do at this point, is make our guesses, and wait

I don't believe Little finger knew at all that Jon was Lyanna's son, nevermind Rhaegars son. He suspected they were in love but how would he know about Ned not having an affair and Jon not been his son? No one knew where Rhaegar took Lyanna for all the time they were in hiding so no one knew she was pregnant. He knew she wasn't raped or kidnapped but not about Jon's heritage or he would have eluded to the fact with Sansa to get her to rule the North instead of Jon. Ned did a great job at cost to his own reputation and the shame of lying to everyone including his wife & children, he protected Jon and gave him everything he would need as an adult. Only shame was the fact Lady Caitlyn would have been a different mother to Jon had she been told the truth of his birth, instead she treated him like a stray dog who wasn't welcome and built resentment between them.

See, I think too many people forget Elia is still a Martell. She might've truly loved Rhaegar, but she knew she couldn't give him another child. But she might've pulled some strings herself too. I don't think this will happen, because it would disvalue Bran, seeing this critical information in his weirwood tree visions. And why making such a fuss about this (dangerous) secret when Baelish would spill the beans just out of the blue? No, it definitely would ruin that grand moment millions of fans are waiting for. I think this scene has another background: The simplest reason would be Littlefinger wants to marry Sansa and offers the Vale army for the fight vs the White Walker in return for Sansa's hand. Other reasons: Littlefinger insults Ned or he blames Jon for Rickon's death... I don't t even think LF KNOWS about Jon's parentage - maybe he is suspicious, but he has no evidence. - But we, the audience, will get some hints: Next thing we'll get to see might be Jon, encounter the dragons - maybe even ride one of them. And we will see the tourney in Herrenhall. Maybe somebody will tell Jon about the tourney - as I recall Thoros of Myr and Beric Dondarion were present as well

Even if she went willingly, it wasn't her decision to make. She was betrothed to another man and the man she ran off with was already married. If this is indeed based of medieval times, then she is basically her fathers pawn and is to be wed to whomever he sees fit. Kidnapping or not, there was still a crime committed. Back when some photos were released showing Jon interacting with a dragon head model, no one explained why a dragon head would be that small. The PTWP is being fostered by Ashara Dayne who is alive and going by the name Septa Lamore. The Dayne's have a family duty to protect the PTWP and that's why AD went into hiding & gave up her son, Jon. Jon, will become the Sword of the Morning, like his Uncle Arthur Dayne aka Mance Raider.

Great video! Every time I hear you talk about this topic I get more and more ideas of how things might go and I get more excited for season seven to start! The thing about the fight in the crypts is that I wouldn't put it past Little Finger to ask John to help him marry Sansa for the Vale army. Also I think if Little Finger tells Sansa about John's true parents it might bring the two closer because she never could see John as a brother but to find out he is a cousin might make it easier for her to accept him. Rhaegar and Lyanna fell in love at the tournament and had to run off together because she was promised to Robert Baratheon. She never wanted to marry Robert she told Ned because of all of his womanizing, plus he already had an illegimate daughter. When her and Rhaegar met at the tournament, It was love at first sight for both, and they had to sneak away to act on it. I think it will come out eventually that Rhaegar's wife Elia actually agreed to him taking another wife because she knew he wanted more children and she couldn't have anymore. She was from Dorne, where they have open marriages, relationships and lots of illegimate children which is not a big deal there as it is in other kingdoms. Rhaegar told her in the TV show flashback that he had to have three heads of the dragon right after she gave birth to his first son, and since that almost killed her, she knew she couldn't give him more. So basically I think it will come out that Elia agreed to it as well.

I think there are certain people among the court at King's Landing who suspect that the story of Lyanna's kidnap and rape might not be the whole truth. And among those certain people, there may be a few who decided to dig deeper. Littlefinger may not have proof, or anything more than rumors, but bits of information can often be tied together to create a bigger picture.

Lest we forget, we know Meera Reed is "going home" some time this season, and I think we will learn or at least have it confirmed by Howland Reed, who was actually there and sent his children to help Bran. The TEC didn't go out of his way to tell Bran the he was Meera and Jojen's father in the show version of the TOJ unless there was going to be a follow-up moment this season. Either way, Im excited to see where they go with it.
