revisiting this a year later, i think almost everything i said holds up. however in the video at the time i alluded to my opinion being that sans didnt have depression. i want to say that i disagree with this noe. being depressed means a lot of things to different people. for sans it doesnt mean he is sad, but rather apathetic, lacking in motivation and potentially finds it hard to connect with people. depression doesnt always mean being sad. my own depression for the longest time showed as anger rather than sadness for example. that's all i wanted to say. glad yall enjoy the video

Honestly, I used to think the same thing. It's not that Sans isn't depressed; it's how most people depict it. So many fan works make him act like he's one bad day away from ending it all, but that's probably the most stereotypical depiction of depression. Yeah, he's depressed; but honestly, who isn't in this game? They all just have very different ways of showing it.

Canon Sans: isn't edgy, isn't over protective, level-headed enough to not burst into tears when finding Papyrus dead, uses his quantum physics knowledge to cheat by teleporting, dodging and removing player's i-frames, likes pranks and uses puns mainly to annoy Paps by telling cheesy and lazy puns at wrong times, isn't dating Toriel and is instead friends with her, keeps to himself to not bother people with his vast knowledge about the whole timeline thing

Based on how Sans was designed and how his personality in game was treated, when looked at from the perspective of someone playing Undertale completely blind with absolutely no knowledge of the whole edgy-blue-eye-burning-in-hell thing, Sans was clearly designed to be a subversion to the "comic relief" trope, even down to his own name cutting out the "Comic" in "Comic Sans", since that's more of a literal profession of his. His darker side being glorified in the fandom ruins this perception, but if it were intact, it wouldn't be far off to assume that Sans is supposed to give off the vibe of a joke character, a literal comic relief who just pops up and doesn't serve much of a purpose to the overall story- but that's the thing. This is Undertale, where the very concept of any given trope is almost always flipped on its head, down to the core idea of the game itself being an RPG where nobody has to die. Sans can't JUST be a comic relief. He, like every other character in the game, has layers. And when you look at it from that perspective, his serious side becomes the twist. Thinking about it this way, in the "genocide" route, you'll find yourself in a scenario where you just scared off the main antagonist of the entire game, presumably the only person who could stand in your way, just from how powerful and borderline unstoppable of a beast you've become. You'd think nothing could get in your way. Then you encounter the joke character, the comic relief that never does anything. Why would he of all people pose a threat to you? And that's where the twist comes in. That's what it's SUPPOSED to be, anyways- it's him. Of all the characters that could possibly put an end to your rampage, it's the weakest enemy, the joke, the guy who barely even matters to the overall plot. It's a way to mock and belittle you in a cosmic sense, like saying "huh? you haven't beaten this guy yet? come on, this weirdo's got nothin' on you." You literally can't even beat the guy who can only deal one damage and dies in a single hit. The circumstances surrounding it are more specific which makes it more difficult, but it doesn't change the sentiment that the game is trying to insult you through this twist. Unfortunately, the fandom harped on this side of Sans, and now absolutely everyone and their mom knows about it, and now the "twist" is that whenever someone plays Undertale expecting sans to be a melodramatic edgelord with a constantly flaming blue eye, instead they get a practical jokester that rarely takes anything seriously. I've seen people get genuinely surprised by the fact that he isn't an overpowered crybaby with godlike abilities when they actually meet him in the game. It's genuinely saddening.

I think also the the other source of Sans' edginess comes from some Neutral runs in which Papyrus is killed off, in the judgement hall Sans will ask a question about a special power and responsibility of doing the right thing and either answer will have him leaving a scathing comment about you killing Papyrus as a last sentence and most of the neutral ending calls in which Papyrus is dead, Sans will typically end off the call with resentment towards the human.

"do you think the worst person can change?" he also is keen on consequences, iirc asking you in routes where you kill papyrus if you're above the consequences

One thing that really opened up a possible cause behind sans’s depression, in genocide when you spare him then fight, he says “guess we’re not really friends huh? Don’t tell the other sans’es that ok?” Or something like that. It definitely showed he valued friendship, and was absolutely crushed to find out they weren’t truly friends to begin with. But the fact that he kept fighting means this isn’t the first time something like that has happened. Maybe flowey during his fight with sans or maybe the great mystery man “gaster”. It’s a lot of ifs but it shows a possible route cause for his depression if he does have it.

I would argue that Sans does have some form of depression or such. It likely stems from... Not necessarily being actively aware of resets, but rather having knowledge that they're happening. He mentions it during his fight. Why bother trying if there's some _thing_ starting and stopping timelines? You also forgot to mention the conditions of Sans' fight. He only bothers to fight you if literally _everyone else in the Underground_ (sans like Alphys and the people she evacuated) is dead. Not even killing Papyrus on a neutral one sparks this. He later says within the fight itself that at some point coming up, "everything ends". It essentially implies that when you erase the world at the end of the genocide run, every single timeline dies off. Essentially, Sans literally could not afford to not care anymore. He had absolutely no choice but to stand his ground.

Sans, my opinion, has depression. Has a fake smile on all the time, when hes awake, when hes asleep, when everyone he knows and loves are dead. Through it all he keeps on smiling, masking his emotions, making jokes to laugh the pain inside. He is lazy and doesn't really do anything because he knows it doesn't matter. He knows that no matter what he does, your just going to reset. He himself literally says in genocide, "knowing that one day without any warning... it's all gonna reset." The only thing he does, is trying to give everyone else who doesn't know a better life than he has, giving Papyrus food and shelter by working 4 jobs, looking through car magazines for Papyrus, baking a freaking "Quiche" that a lady gave him the recipe for! His main goal is to make everybody happy, except for him. And, to be honest, I can really relate to that. Undertale is so popular because it feels alive, it feels like the characters on it are real, and giving each and every character a personality and real life flaws. Sans personality and flaws I feel are a main reason people love him so much. Ok, I should stop talking now, I'm probably getting really annoying lol-

He's lazy because he's human (err... rather dead) not because he's depressed. Yes it's a form of depression but nothing edgy or over the top. Humans hide things all the time. sans is highly aware that frisk is a player, who has the ability to kill anyone from the underground, including Papyrus. which is why sans is probably doing full on research on timeline sciences in the back of sans' house, he then figures out that he is inside a video game with a bunch of NPCs. On the topic of Sans only having the same Deja Vu as other charachters, I disagree. Other characters say frisk seems kinda familiar, sans knows exactly how many times he has killed you in the genocide run. Though, besides that, I 100% agree with this video. I don't think sans hates humanity, the "dead where you stand" comment is probably a mixture of his creepy way of messing with you and the fact that, if he hadn't promised someone to take care of you, he probably WOULD have killed you, not out of hatred, but simply because the monsters needed human souls to get out of the underground. He isn't some all powerful god, as far as we can tell, his KR works based off of how many people you have killed, so his attacks would all do 1 damage to most monsters.

I would like to add something! People think that sans has like- nightmares everyday but no one is talking about papyrus'es nightmares if you call papyrus near the Lazer puzzle in hotland he'll say he can't help because "they were his least favorite nightmare" and it may or may not further give a reason why fans think papyrus doesn't sleep. @@Minikitty130nothing that isn’t said directly is canon and a lot of the stuff we know about undertale and deltarune is implied instead of said super specifically. For example, sans is really powerful, we can infer this from the fight, the teleportation, and the other things he can do that just seem on another level than everyone else. We can also infer that he feels bad about his current situation given that it is all he talks about during his fight, quote, “ you can’t understand how this feels knowing that one day it will all be reset,” Lastly we can infer that he is either protective or at least really caring over his brother papyrus as killing him makes sans disappear for almost the rest of the game in any version of your play through.

@@pdawgthelegend2640 Ok you have a point. I was a bit harsh there, and also I guess a lot of fan made stuff is in an AU (Alternate Universe) so I can't really complain about them. Also now that you have said it, I guess a lot of the stuff I dislike about fanon is sort of canon. However, there was a lot of stuff I didnt say about stuff made by fans that are objectively false, like for example, in a lot of fanfics it's a big part of the story that Sans can remember timelines which we know for a fact isn't true, he even said it himself in the genocide battle. Oh also another big part is Gaster being Sans' father???? I know Gaster's name is a font like Sans' and Papyrus' but it's just a name, how does that prove anything! Then Sans' character itself just seems, very unlike the Sans I know and love from the game.

I also noticed that. I got real deep into the Sans Centric side of the Fandom (AUs), but never really encountered any of the "misconceptions" listed, (and there weren't definitely a lot of misconceptions in that fandom). I mean sure there was a lot of intense/edgy content, but it was always showed alongside the comedic, lazy persona he's always been portrayed as. I've never seen anyone argue that Sans is not lazy or is not a jokster. The only "revelation" I got from this that is actually misrepresented is that Sans is practically more of a prankster than a punny joker. This genuinely made my mind explode. I think to argue that Sans is not intense (when it comes down to it) is also a disservice to the character. As he IS inherently a layered skeleton and I'm not talking about his jacket here. He is a chill guy, but he can also be intense, and that cohabitation doesn't defy his character in anyway.
