While I'm glad for the cash flow it brings, as a greek, I'll never understand the appeal of santorini. Not even good, forget amazing, beaches, overpriced and overcrowded, architecture type not limited to this island. I spent my summers from middle school to highschool sailing the ionian and agean, the price is just not justified. Want amazing sunsets? Corfu, Parga, Lefkada. Amazing beaches and water? Zakynthos, Paxos, Skiros, Milos. Rent your own boat for a day with 60usd and pick your own private beach. And with the price tag on one night here you can get 6 elsewhere with a sunset view and a pool bigger than 500sqft. I appreciate the content, though. If you want to visit Greece again my no 1 recommendation is Parga and surrounding areas

Hi Isabelle, thanks a lot for your advices! I'll keep these in mind. Since I plan on visiting soon your beautiful country on with my motorcycle (I live in Switzerland), do the islands that you cited have nice roads to enjoy on a bike (like nice scenery, etc.)? Would you have particular recommendations in this regard? Thanks in advance!

As a Greek, I was sitting at the edge of my seat until @11:40. It is crazy hearing some tourists call Greece expensive and when you ask them where in Greece they've been it's usually along the lines of a 5-star-StealTouristMoney Hotel in Santorini or Mykonos. The reality is you can live big in Greece on just 10-30% of the average budget tourists spend here. All you have to do is either a very basic research on where you want to go and why, or ask someone Greek for advice. Most Greek people can't tolerate staying in Santorini for more than a few days (as a once in a lifetime experience, or once every 10 years), and never in their lifetime even approach Mykonos. There is a good reason for that.

What the thing with Mykonos? As a Greek, which destination off the beaten tourist track you would recommend?
@awfm03 жыл бұрын
@@teodorachasse1121 To be honest there are too many choices for different kind of appetites. Places better for night life, places to chill, places to travel around, good food, and so on, so it really depends on what you're looking. But from my experience only Mykonos and Santorini are over the top priced. Crete for example is a very big island worth visiting, and Chania is very beautiful. But there are also many others.
@davee.49823 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with this. We just stayed in Paros, Naxos and Milos at incredible luxury hotels with sea views for about a quarter of the nightly rate of our Santorini hotel. Santorini is definitely a bucket list item, but once you've seen the caldera, you can opt for the islands that are somewhat less flooded with American and (pre-covid) Chinese tourists.

As someone who lived in Santorini for many years, and owner of a luxury travel management company who deals with the top hotels and villas on the Greek islands, I can say that most tourists wants to stay at the well-known hotels that they see on social media, which are almost always costly. However, my tips for new visitors is just to look for villas which offers amazing views and are situated in incredible locations around the islands...there is everything to suit everyones price range. And i would highly recommend booking 2 or 3 different villas or hotels in different locations for the duration of your stay, as you get to experience more variety of the islands - there are always something new to explore and experience without having to be trampled on at the touristy spots during peak season.

You are so correct, exactly three years ago in April I traveled to Greece on a solo trip, I did a few days in Santorini and stayed at a wonderful boutique hotel in imerovigli for less than 100usd per night, nice breakfast included, i loved my stay, and the caldera was steps away and no crowds around my room or the area, hello from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 🇹🇹 😄😄

I work as a seasonist in a very expensive hotel in Imerovigli. The hotel is owned by a group of hotels that they also provide other services like yachting etc. Exclusivity and quality service as well as a suite curved in the rocks is what makes this kind of vacation pricey. This doesn't mean that a budget stay will ruin your experience, not at all. Thank you for covering this topic, wish you the best.

Our hotel was great, location was even better (for us) than Oia/Fira because it wasn't so crowded and that was what we were looking for. We rent a car so we could get to the capital in about 15 min.

When my wife and I were in Nassau, Bahamas. Super expensive. We would wait outside the hotel for the local bus into the city. Two dollars twenty. We would sit in the front of the hotel in a nice parkette with palm trees, and flowers, and just enjoy the views drinking a few local beers. We would take the local bus through the island, and just stop, enjoy the ocean views, buy a few more local beers, or rum, or both, lol and enjoy. We had a great time, mixing in the economy, with middle-class status restaurants. The expensive hotels, are great to visit, or even grab one drink to enjoy the experience
@uo99902 жыл бұрын
As Greek and working in customer service in Santorini i would have to say some useful tips, if someone is on budget. 1. Stay no longer than 3-4 days. 2. Take a bus from the crowded central station in fyra , ticket costs 1,60 one way to imerovigli oia kamari perisa. 2 euros to port or from , ( be careful , coins only) and the ticket collectors are shouting for the departing bus so pay attention to them. 3. Santorini has a great connection with ferrys Take a ferry to either Mylos Crete Naxos from Naxos another one to koufonisia donousa skinousa ( for unique Beaches) or to folegandros( great chora) , ios ( party island and also for relaxation)etc ( those islands are in Cyclades ) Greece generally has numerous of habitat or inhabit island s each of them has its ID. 4. Shop from big supermarket chains as like sklavenitis.in fyra . 5. Walk from fyra to imerovigli through fyrostefani , 30 min . From oia to imerovigli walk is about 3 hours. ( Try this route) Yaghting is up to you, ideal is to go as a group and to book a cruise either from pireaus , Santorini,leros,crete etc or wherever in Greece compare prices make burgains and plan a 20+ day's for experience in most of the islands . 6. Santorini is truly worth visiting once, its a Instagramic island , but you have to know that it doesn't represent local genuine hospitality, smaller and less habitat islands ( touristic) have a sence to it. Greece is an amazing country but due to luck of knowledge people find themselves trapped into the same destinations , Santorini, Mykonos, mylos, crete, Rhodes, zante, Corfu, chalkidiki, kos, paros. And don't even know islands as like , Koufonisia, paxi, antipaxi, symi, leros, karpathos, anafi, amorgos, astypalaia, nisyros, alonisos, skiathos, and so on . If youre coming to Santorini is a great experience, but try to visit more gems less touristic.

My holiday was part of a UK holiday package & so whilst it would seem to be more on the expensive side, it was under £2000 for 7 nights including flights & transfers. The hotel I stayed at didn’t have the sunset views but it did have unobstructed views of the sunrise which was equally as stunning. You don’t have to pay £500 per night hotels to experience the best of Santorini.

Although Santorini is beautiful, it has become much like a brand name. It's like other parts of Greece or Greek islands don't exist and you're only limited to Santorini. There's other Greek islands just as nice, BUT a whole lot cheaper - Chios and Lesvos They are a large islands and have an array of different beaches, restaurants, and places to explore, but without Santorini's price tag. I stayed in Oia last month, and made sure to book a room with a balcony (with hot tub) AND sunset view (£340 a night). I could see the crowds from our balcony, and seeing the chaos, while in our own peaceful balcony to watch the sunset made the cost worth it. We definitely wouldn't have enjoyed the visit as much if we had to find a public spot in Oia for the sunset each night. I'd recommend finding a smaller hotel with no pool (with or without hot tub) in Oia, and going out to eat in the many restaurants in Oia. Having said that, I wouldn't visit Santorini again myself, but WOULD recommend it as a once in a lifetime visit.

Hi, this video got on my suggestion list because I was there 2 weeks ago. We were in a really intimate hotel in Vlychada. 350€ a night, which is indeed expensive, but many great perks, such as an actually intimate jacuzzi, direct access to the sea, an incredible homemade breakfast, and a very nice hotel manager which gave us a lot of great tips for visiting the island. Name of the hotel is Aegean Melody Suites. I strongly recommend renting a quad to be free to go anywhere from there though. And I also suggest a hard pass on Oia, unless you're going for the 3 hour walk from Fira to Oia, which was the best walk I ever had.

It always comes down to what you think you can afford. If you can do the six-star mega-resorts, go for it, why not? If you can, do the research, spend three nights instead of seven, maximize your down time, travel time, enjoy the local stores, eat local produce instead of restaurant food, buy local beer, instead of restaurant beer, and think about how locals think. In my travels, most tourists tap out, after five days, just killing time until they return home. So enjoy, and be smart, you'd be amazed how far a few euros can take you, enjoying two beers, and a view from a park, or side bench

And in all honesty we both agree we had a better time at the more affordable hotel than our five star resort hotel. Yes, the views were insane, but if you want to be out exploring during the day then the views mean very little. I’ve said to all my friends ever since “if you’re going to Santorini, save money on your accommodation and then splurge on private boat tours, scuba diving and 5 star dining”.

It was in a small one room studio, cost less than £90.00 for the week! We had the best time. And the young couple next door were Evertonians! So even the neighbours were great! Mind you my wife saved them after they overslept for their flight back to Liverpool! She sleeps light and was awake very early and knew they were still in their room, so managed to raise them in time! We’ve also done the ‘cave thing’ and it was great….and expensive!

Going May 2022. We are staying at the Canaves suites ressort. We were also able to snag 2 nights with points and paid a 3rd night on an upgraded room. Yes, super pricey but it is our honeymoon. We plan to save money in Crete and Athens and splurge a little in Santorini. From what I've read, even in some parts of Oia you won't get to see the sunset, at least not on the hotel that we are staying. The sunset is best seen from the north part of the island and our hotel has a free shuttle to a sister hotel where you can see it, it is called Canaves epitome. We plan to go to the Santo's winery anyway to see it there so I am ok with it. Great content btw. I like how you provide the financial aspect of a trip. You got a new subscriber.

Best place to stay in Santorini is Immerovigli, where prices are less and also offers a great sunset view also caldera and volcano view is just awesome! We stayed in Immerovigli and had a great time !

We just spent 6 weeks living in Santorini and spent €20 a night for a beautiful accommodation near Thera. We spent so many evenings watching the FREE sunset views and soaking up the Caldera from different points around the island it never gets old. Loved this video, we looked to treat ourselves for one night but couldn’t bring ourselves to pay €1000+ which was more than our accommodation costs for the whole time we were there😂

@@wildfoxfire1315 Casa Lengko is the name, there are four apartments to choose from, we did stay in November/December so out of season prices, the owners are lovely too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIPaonqamt1oh6c
