The problem with rural Scotland, especially rural areas is that infrastructure does not exist to support heavy tourist footfall. Especially when catering for touring caravans and motor homes, this is a big issue as people spoil the landscape and dump bags of rubbish, the worst is people emptying there sewage cassettes in the ditch at lay-bys from caravans and motor homes. I noticed this driving to Inverness from Aberdeen where I live and pulling over for a break, the stench of pee and poop was horrendous, this was never an issue 5 years ago and unheard of but a problem now. This is why travellers or tourists may come across hostility and anger from locals, especially those who do not benefit from tourism. Also low population density areas or very wild appearing places are that way because they are actually quite brutal environments at certain times of the year and not suitable for large scale human habitation. However, the kind of people who have grown up and live in these places tend to be quite hardy themselves and may not take to disrespect towards the environment they are from and know from outsiders. Most people in the Highlands are friendly and accomodating, and will help if you are stuck or stranded. I will also add that infrastructure improvements are always reactive not proactive from the local authorities or government, and maybe people would not litter or act in a disrespectful way if facilities were made available to empty waste cassettes and dispose of waste. The issue again is the area covered with low population density, Highland council area is bigger than Wales or Belgium and because of the geography and topography quite challenging to serve and support travellers. All I can say is that if you are travelling in Scotland do your research first, and prepare for the places you are going. For example, the largest settlement on the entire North West Coast of the Highlands is Ullapool, it has a native population of only around 1500 to 2000 people, and this is the largest settlement for hundreds of square miles??? Think where you are going, and plan ahead, where can I get fresh water and supplies, where can I dispose of waste. Never dump your rubbish or sewage ANYWHERE it should not be. I live in NE Scotland close to the Cairngorms which thankfully is a little better served and can cater for tourists far better. Thanks for the videos.

Totally agree as someone who lives in the rural highlands! The infrastructure isn’t here for the amount of vans and people who visit x
@cheryllundholm8779 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree! And, this goes for everywhere, where the infrastructure isn't there for van travelers. I wouldn't think of dumping trash etc., if I were driving my car and traveling!
@levt2156 Жыл бұрын
I completely agree. What a beautiful, wild, and rugged country. Precisely why so many people want to tour around. Like you said, however, your country should be treated with respect and courtesy. I'll never understand why some people have so much disregard as to leave trash behind. It just really boggles my mind.
@marlarkin1090 Жыл бұрын
Is why I always visit out of season as it's rare I can't get into a campsite a couple of times a week to service the van. A large majority of vans I see around Scotland are hired motorhomes and I feel the renter's should educate the hirers on van life etiquette. Also.some.of the vans are way too big for highland roads . The van designers also need to install bigger toilet cassettes in their vehicles. I see people emptying a cassette from 5 berth unit the same size as mine in a 2 berth. Also tell the renter's to try and hang on and use public loos then your cassette won't fill up so quick . Thinking about infrastructure, maybe some more popular places could set up van service points. I'd be happy to pay say £5+ for an empty and water top up. Hell that's just over the price of a pint! But it means if campsites are full then you've still got options.

For the record kids, I love every one of your videos and have for some time, My wife and I are both Yanks but I lived in the UK at RAF Chelveston in North Hamptonshire for a year and then in Huntingdonshire for another year where I met and married the love of my life, a young American lady whose father was, as I was, in the USAF. The difference was that I was enlisted, and her father was an Officer. The long and the short of it is, we were married on August 2nd, 1960, and remained married until, sadly, she passed on November 1st, 2023, eighty-three years to the day after her birth in Champaign, Illinois on November 1st, 1940. During our lives, we were able to make several visits from the States to Scotland and loved every second of our time there, spending much of our time in and around Stirling, and Edinburgh with many other side trips into the countryside. I will miss it for the balance of my life, As I have said many times, when I am in the UK, I am never homesick for the US but when I am in the US, I am always homesick for the UK!

I am so very sorry about your wife's passing. Over sixty three years together and then to have lost her so recently (and on her birthday). I can't imagine. I've been with my husband since I was 15 and we've been together almost 24 years. His love and companionship are all I've ever known and to lose him would be like a part of my soul is missing. I'm glad you shared that wonderful time together with your wife and my heart is heavy for your loss now. I hope you are surrounded by love and support during this difficult time.

Bagpipes. Many years ago my family lived overseas for my Dad's work, we were in a small remote expatriate township overlooking a large(ish) lake. Being tropical many of us left the windows/doors open much of the time. (Painting a word picture here). Anyway one lovely clear warm night there was a power outage, and before most of the residents could scramble for candles etc, one of the guys (I don't know how many of us knew he played) grabbed his bagpipes and played a couple of tunes, standing on the porch in just the moonlight. The air was still and the hauntingly beautiful sounds echoed across the lake. It brought me, and many others I'm sure, to tears. I have loved the pipes ever since - altogether magical. When the lights came back on he put his pipes away, and I at least was left with a rather large lump in my throat.

It's so beautiful and so many people want to visit but are totally rude and disregard that this is a place where people live. I'm so glad you did this positive video about my Scotland. I lived in Ayr in the mid to late 80s in our house on the sea and return annually, having fallen in love with the western Highlands and islands in 2015. Your previous video saying how Scotland hates you, etc., and banging on about bad weather made me sad. It also added to a negative opinion others seem to have. I began watching you when you were exploring part of the NC500 and you were loving it. I had not yet been to that part of Scotland. Last year I went and had daily rain, some of it sideways, with lovely breaks to clearer weather when I explored Smoo Cave At age 70 I did the Whaligoe Steps. It was rainy and windy at first then just windy, so I had even more of a challenge. But I did it! Thank you for this long advert of positivity on Scotland. It's deserved. 😊❤

After their previous video that you mention here, I did see a video from someone who was complaining and insinuating that the Beans had faked it and used staged pictures showing someone being hostile to them. I was very quick to go on and comment that they couldn't use a realistic photo, they were simply making their point which was a valid point. Many others have talked about the hostility to campervanners and often as mentioned it is for good reason, irresponsible people who don't care about the countryside and keeping it clean. (The same can be said for some gypsies/travellers giving others a bad name) but it is clear from this video how much they really love Scotland and in my opinion, this does a lot for promoting it.

Speaking as a Highland resident this was a great overview of what to see and do. You’ve definitely picked up on the most rewarding reasons to come, and it’s great that you have taken the time to explore and understand the country rather than just rushing from one Instagram spot to another. If you want to get confused about pronunciation, take a trip on the Caledonian Canal. There you’ll encounter both locks and lochs!😂 Oh, and we don’t really talk about “bagpipes”, just “pipes”. Our town pipe band plays on the high street on Friday evenings during the summer and loads of local people come out to watch and support. Many of them will have family members in the band. It’s very much part of the culture, as is the whole trad music scene. Many children have the opportunity to learn and perform on traditional instruments like the fiddle, whistle and accordion through school. I think you guys are reflective of the types of visitors that have been welcomed in the Highlands for many decades; those who have an affinity and appreciation for all the things that Scotland has to offer. Very different from those who come up and “do” the NC 500 just because KZbin tells them to.

On the Northern lights, they are pretty common in the North of Scotland and the North East in particular is one of the better places to see them as it tends to be a lot less cloudy than the west coast (or central Scotland). Also Aberdeen harbour is genuinely one of the best places to see dolphins, they hang around there and can be seen multiple times a week.

Hey, enjoyed your recap. Thanks for the great images. This summer (June- July) I spent 6 weeks in Scotland and really enjoyed it. The waterfall you mentioned was incredible and was one of many highlights of the visit. I stayed at a beach that really did look like something from the tropics. I did get to enjoy the midges. The buggers were able to get through the window screens. The view after the hike up past the Old Man of Storr almost made me cry because it was so beautiful. I didn‘t have any negative experience with the Scots, quite the opposite. Most were extremely relaxed and the countyside really gave out an extremely peaceful vibe. It wasn‘t that last time that I visited there! (But please tell everyone it was awful and they should stay away!)

Anyway, since you enjoyed Scotland as much as you did, I would really encourage you to check out spending some time in Oregon while you are in the US. We have an amazing variety of landscapes-much of the western part of the state is very much like Scotland. The Oregon coast is just spectacular, but the topography goes from temperate forests in the west, the verdant Willamette Valley,( a major agricultural area where we have world famous Pinot noir wine, and produce 99% of the hazelnuts in the US), to hight desert in the eastern 2/3 of the state. The Columbia River Gorge is a National Scenic Area with over 100 waterfalls, and the Columbia River (one of the major river systems of the US) goes from the Pacific Ocean through the largest city, Portland, and on to the high (3,000’ elevation) desert of Eastern Oregon cattle and wheat ranch country.

Also Metz where the French army was besieged in the Franco-German war of 1870 and where they have kayaking championships on the river. Verdun, Vimy Ridge, Notre Dame de Lorette, Pozieres, Albert all have grand and shocking memorials to the death toll of WW1. The fortress at Verdun is like life after an apocalypse. An educated tourist will make many more friends that will last a lifetime. Hope the Travel Beans (Emma, Alex and Noah) ar doing ok. All the best mates 👍 from the Love Beans ❤ Harriet, Jim and Yuki🐕 Richmond, Va.

I loved it when my Nanny was "piped in" when we had important family parties. Fun fact: we're Canadian (but she was from Cape Breton so; kind of the same)

No idea why the nc500 is so popular, there is so much more to Scotland and more beautiful places there to see.

So glad you found the great sea food. You should try Arbroath Smokies next time too.(nice place to visit too) (A hot smoked haddock), the queen mum loved them but watch out for those bones! Great when still warm from the smoker and smooshed onto buttered toast. and other favourites like Meat pie, and Tablet (a crumbly fudge)

You guys need to take a road trip with your US van up to Newfoundland. Would be an interesting comparison to Scotland.

Hey guys. I've seen the Northern Lights in upstate NY and in VT. Several times in VT, but never predictable. Anyway, something to keep in mind when you're back in the States. ❤

When you mentioned the Northern Lights my mind immediately went to the movie Local Hero, an absolutely hilarious movie. Except my wife didn't get it at all.

You need to check out the Red Hot Chilli Pipers for something a bit different with bagpipes, followed them for a while now and seen them live, never thought I’d buy tickets to go see a group play them but was a great night!
