I love love love this video. ❤😄 I have a fabric stash and when I want to sew I typically do not have the correct fabric. Or, I don’t have enough to make what I want. Or, I have way more than the pattern calls for and the leftover isn’t enough to do something else with. And, yes, some of the fabric I don’t like anymore. I have been slowly purging my stash. However, do not live close to fabric stores (I have a 2 hour round trip drive) which makes going shopping a half day jaunt.

My grandmother and mother sewed and neither of them had a stash (unless you count my grandma's rag bag as a stash). They bought fabric the way you do, with a specific purpose in mind to make a specific garment. I think that building a stash is a whole different hobby than sewing. I have a huge stash of fabric, but still end up buying more when I have a project in mind!

I haven’t had a fabric stash in about 10 years. I love it. I rather shop for the fabric rather than shop for the pattern because of amount and type of fabric needed. I’ve been using my scraps … thanks for the inspiration… they are almost gone.

Great video. I do a lot of sewing for other people, so my fabric stash is very large. It helps to have that stash when customers are looking for something not in the stores nearby. Sometimes I don’t have the fabric that they are looking for, that’s when we go to the fabrics stores in town or online. I’ve been sewing for years, but I love watching other people sew on KZbin. It helps me with creativity and it’s also very calming and relaxing to me. Love the shirt you made with your Sherpa stash.

I love how you secure the fabrics you use for the garments you are sewing. It is a creative way to do it! And no buyers remorse either. As a young sewist in the 1970s, I would shop for the fabric needed to make the garment I wanted to sew. I did not have extra cash on hand at all and so I could only get what was needed for the garment. On occasion, I would see a fabric I couldn't live without and like you would play my cards to see if it would still be available when ready to make that garment. When I became busier... husband, kids, job... I had a little more money but not as much time..I ended up with a small stash and by the time I finally had to sew a garment the thrill was gone or it was the wrong Type of fabric for the season for the garment. Then my return to sewing garments happened during the pandemic. I'm an ICU nurse and we all needed masks and scrub caps.. I had a nice little stash of vintage fabrics I used to make a ton of those! I used up most of my old old stash! Now I was once again hooked. The stores were on lock down and so I ordered online! Never had done that before and I WENT CRAZY! So many fabrics out there!. That also started me in purchasing patterns! The sales at Joann! Fast forward to now... I've got a stash!! I am sticking to the stash, with the exception of thrifted fabrics and patterns for the most part.... I am envious of your situation...I think I needed the dopamine rush during the pandemic to make me feel better..

Hi, Theresa. Thank you so much. I loved reading about your journey to having a fabric stash. That's so wonderful that you were able to use the stash you had during the pandemic to sew masks and scrub caps. I laughed when you said you went crazy ordering fabric online during the lockdown. :) Now that you have a stash, I bet it's great to go through your stash when you're ready to sew. Maybe that will be me one day! :)

Love it! I have a small stash. Mostly fabrics I intended to sew right away but didn’t get to. And guess what? I still have clothes to wear 😂 It would be great to have no stash, just wish we had better in-store options. But even if you have to shop online and wait, I think at the end of the day I would end up with a better result. I understand for many, sewing is their “creative outlet”, but even though I do love the creative aspect of it, to me sewing is a craft driven by actual, real life needs. To each their own way. Not judging others. But I don’t want to escape reality by stashing fabric and patterns and making garments for Lala land. Your video really inspires me to finally get through the cuts I have (two big bins at the moment). I have been working on it for a couple of years, but every now and then I get tempted and buy more fabric! Ugh. But at least now I am getting to those cuts faster than I used to. I’ve sewn fabric that I’ve had for years. Some garments work out, some don’t. But I’m always happy to have one less “to-do”

Thanks for sharing this video! When I lived on the West Coast, I had many fabric stores easily accessible. I even traveled to the LA Garment District monthly to shop for my wedding gown clients so not really a need to have a huge stash. Even though I had a basic stash (only 2 fabric bins) when I moved to Arkansas 18 years ago, there were no fabric stores close by except for Hobby Lobby. JoAnn fabrics is 55 miles from where I live so that's more than 2 hours of travel time out of my day in hopes of finding what I need. Most of the time that I go, I am disappointed and leave without buying anything so I no longer waste my time. As my new customer base grew, I found myself ordering fine fabrics from online vendors and calling my suppliers back in LA to send me samples and fabrics. So by the time the Pandemic hit, I decided to retire from my custom wedding gown business leaving me with too much fabric and the habit of shopping online for more!!! Reality hurts! And while having a large fabric stash comes in handy, I totally agree that it is a detriment in a small house! I'm determined to NOT purchase any more fabric in 2025 ...unsubscribing to most of those sites, as I continue to sew my stash and "purge" fabrics I won't use. Tough love but I know I can do it and sew with a clear head and less frustration. And seriously, I have beautiful fine fabrics! Happy to share with a fellow sewist who may be in need 😊

I have some leftover fabric from my daughter’s wedding gown and I am hoping to use it to make a dressy blouse, or to line other garments. Not only do I have a good chunk left from the actual fabric I used, I also have some big samples I had ordered. Hoping to get creative and out those to good use soon! I can see how having many beautiful cuts would stress me out. The couple of bins I have are stressing me out already 😂

Hi, Mary. You're welcome!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I can see how living close to the garment district in LA and then moving to Arkansas with only Hobby Lobby nearby made buying fabric more challenging, and driving 55 miles one way to not find fabric in Joann would be super disappointing. I'm cheering you on. :) Thanks again.

My fabric supply was gifted, which has its pros and cons as well. It's allowed me to experiment freely, but it's mostly quilting cotton. The prints are sometimes rather.... odd! But sometimes I make up a garment and enjoy the quirkiness. But it also makes it hard to spend money on fabric, and I lack experience with shopping for fabric. I love your process, it made me think about allowing myself to move on from the gifted stash! I always watch your videos and this one was very thought provoking. 😊

Ugh! Those online sales! Looking back I realize I’m often disappointed with what I order online. Like I’ll like the fabric that I originally intended to buy, but there’s a 50/50 chance that I’ll be happy with whatever else I put in the cart to get to free shipping 😂. But like everyone seems to agree, in-store options are so limited!
@Manecoarse2 күн бұрын
Hi!!! Such a a great question. No. I never did have a stash. When I started sewing I would buy a couple of different yards of fabric here and there, but I never had more than four or five different pieces at a time, so I wouldn't really call that a stash. I've never had a stash-stash, like a real one. I really admire you for being able to shop through the fabric you have on hand and just start sewing. That's awesome. Good deals online can be hard to pass on. Cali Fabrics has been my online spot. They usually have a really nice selection.

Great video! I see both sides. As for me personally, I need a stash in my life because I cannot spend time shopping they way I would need to if I didn’t have a stash due to working full time outside the home, and I still have two small children to care for and my husband 😂. It’s nice for me to shop my stash when I have the urge to make something (usually when everyone is sound asleep). I normally buy fabric with a certain style in mind, so I usually have enough fabric for any project. For me, the magic number is five yards ( because of my size), and I only purchase sale items. I will say that my stash is out of control, so I can do better with that, and I plan to this year. TFS! ❤ I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

It makes so much sense, and I really love that with a stash you have the ability to sew something whenever you want. Getting five yards is a great amount to make just about anything. I love that idea. I wouldn’t mind finding a way to have a mixture of a stash and no stash at the same time. lol. Thanks for sharing.

I have a large fabric stash. I usually shop online for my fabric when it's either on sale, or it's a reasonable. I learned a tip from a frugal couple on KZbin to wait a day or two after putting fabric in a cart online, because the company will email you a reminder about your cart and send you a 10% or 15% off code to complete your purchase. The only way that I'd shoot at JoAnn fabrics is if I have a coupon or they have a good sale, otherwise I'm not buying from there. I wait for Hobby Lobby's fabric to go on sale almost every other week. Learned that from a store employee.☺️

Majority of my fabric purchases is online. I have a small stash that I purchased during a sale. The stash I have, I been eyeing the fabric for a while and got it when the sale hits. Waiting for the sale allows me to think of the garment I want to sew. Sometime I have no project in mind I’ll get 4 yards. I’ll up it to 6 if I want to make matching garments with my child. But typically I purchase fabric when I’m ready to make a garment
