@@Michael_B82 From what I've read, static stretching is actually more detrimental before a workout. Note, if you are about to play a full football game or something, definitely static stretch as well to reduce the probability of injury. But for a typical workout, static stretches will just inhibit your muscles' ability to contract quickly and effectively. Essentially, it reduces their "springiness," like an overly stretched rubber band. Dynamic stretches are the way to go before typical workouts.

I do have a question about this study's methodology, though. Why not also have the static stretchers jog after stretching as part of their warm-up? Or at least a group that did such along with a group that did stretching alone. It seems obvious that doing static stretches with no dynamic movements, or movement-based warm-up at all for activities primarily testing agility and strength would be detrimental. Though there is an element of understanding what static stretching is particularly good for as a warm up, comfort at extended range of motion. The reason that gymnasts and dancers include static stretching in their warm ups. But they do warm up with dynamic movements (the movements they're actually preparing to do) as well.

when I first started track, I would get so nervous before the 800. For all the people who have ran the 800 you know why I would be nervous before that race. It’s literal death. So out of anxiousness I would stretch so much. 20 and even 30 minutes. my 800 Coach came up to me and gave me this theory. He said that our muscles are like rubber bands. If you put a rubber band in each finger and stretch it out and hold that rubber band there for an extended period of time it gets loose. It loses its pop. Even though the 800 is long distance race, it’s still a sprint. From that day that’s how I looked at all my stretching, and it has made me a better runner and athlete overall.

There are at least 2 problems with that study. First, 31 is too small for a sample size. Second, the average age for the study was 17.5 years old, which means the results would only be valid for teenagers. In addition to those problems, I have questions about statistical methods used. For example, for a sample size of 31, did they use nonparametric statistical methods or parametric methods?

Other studies with larger sample sizes have definitely proven the benefits of dynamic stretching, its just that he picked a shitty study to reference for this video 🤷‍♀️

This is in line with what I've seen and read about stretching from experts and other studies. Static stretching lengthens muscles, and is best performed on fully warmed muscles, ligaments, and tendons, so nothing tears. For the best mobility, you need flexibility, strength, and agility, so using dynamic stretching to warm up is a good idea.

There's research (don't have the source saved, but it's through one of the major climbing channels here on YT - might have been Lattice?) that shows that static stretches as a warm-up has negative effects - but only for a short time. This was specifically in the context of climbing, but should have some broader applicability, and in essence the findings were that static stretches reduced power recruitment and overall performance (when stretching relevant muscle groups) for 10-15 minutes afterwards. After this, these effects went away entirely, while the other benefits for stretching stayed. So, if you're doing static stretches for a warm-up, make sure to do them early in your warm-up and follow them with warm-ups that match what you're planning to do to aid in muscle recruitment and power. And if you're warming up properly, those 10-15min will fly by anyway. Btw, did the survey you're quoting have a control group? 'Cause it kind of sounded like they had a "30s stretch (essentially no warm-up)" group, alongside two groups doing significant warm-ups, and that's ... uh, rather lopsided.

You shouldn't be skipping static stretching though, just don't use it for warm up. Static stretching is what unlocks more flexibility.

Static stretching is better for flexibility sports like gymnastics, while dynamic stretching is better for high impact sports like track and field.

I feel like static streatching before a workout also increases the risk of injury since your muscles are extra loose and you might accidentally go too far beyond your mobility range.

I personally enjoy dynamic stretches vs static stretches. It hurts less to move then to sit in pain. Static is good for cool down because for one I usually get to sit or sit in a pose so I get to rest as well as stretch.

Static stretching will mess you up, it works for long term flexibility, but it basically hurts your muscles and tendons and requires time to recover. All martial arts that have kicks require static stretching.

In high school I had to lose 2lbs in about 2 hours to make weight for powerlifting meet. I jogged in sweats nearly 2 hours, made weight and then had the best performance of my high school career, even taking home highest total trophy for pound to pound. You’d be surprised just how warmed up you can get for peak performance.

One could interpret that coordinating exercises increase coordination and hence agility. Static stretch to loosen up but do dynamic functional movements to warm up before performance

static stretching does three things, 1, short term joint mobility improvement. 2, long term joint mobility improvement over time. 3, discomfort relief. What it doesn't do, is performance improvement and muscle growth improvement. You only need to static stretch if your joints aren't mobile enough

Admittedly, stretching is far more complicated than a lot people realize. Even “professional“ trainers. Most people don’t like doing it because, yea, it’s kinda boring. But taking the time to actually learn it allows you to develop your own personal versions and diagnose problems before they can manifest or get worse.

The problem I see now is not the information but the source! I see these two young girls advising as many other fitness influencers do about stretching the wrong way! Unfortunately, they have thousands or millions or followers who fall for this and spread this bad information to others and it will never stop. For years we know now that static stretching is not the most adequate form before training but again. Fitness unfit influencers don’t care about what’s right or wrong for views

Dynamic is best unless you’re in recovery from injury/sickness/fatigue or a dynamic day. I like to finish my day by rolling out a yoga mat and lollin around on it, stretchin what ever feels good for a few mins. No program. At the very least it helps me crash asleep in bed and not wriggle n twitch.

Not only does it ruin the things mentioned, but if I recall correctly, it reduces force output of muscle groups by a noticeable margin as well. Meaning: You won't be able to hit a new PR on bench or squat if you static stretch first.
