I'm 36 and going to study a BA majoring in psychology .I'm doing so because I've battled with my mental health since my teens. I was hesitant because of how difficult it is to actually become a practicing psychologist but my own private psychologist said he would help me ,all I have to do is get good marks. I'm scared but excited at the same time.

Yeah, it can be quite scary because you need a PhD, and that's a lot of time and money, but if you're passionate about it, it's worth it. I am. I'm going to study a BA or BSc in almost a year. I have a similar motivation to do it. At least that's how I got started, then I became fascinated and can't imagine studying anything else. We're working towards something that genuinely helps people, something we'll never find boring and an actual life-long career rather than a job to pay the bills, which is more than a lot of people can say. If you really want this, go all in and you won't regret it. That's what I tell myself and also what I gathered from looking to people at different stages of the path I want to take. Also, that's very nice of your psychologist. Good Luck! I believe in you.

Thats the exact same reason I am also choosing to do psychology, please update on how it's going! My family are all warning me against it, but i just feel a certain typa joy when i think about studying this, it's like a dream, so yeah its scary i promise you and ive doubted myself to many times, until i just commited to God like God you know my heart and if this is what im supposed to do, you'll ensure that i am able to do it and give me the strength and determination, im only 19 loll

Victoria Lopes I thought the very same thing but I actually think it helps us understand our clients on a deeper level 🙌🏽 However, the content and nature of the work is really taxing so you have to make sure that you’re okay first - that’s why psychologists have their own psychologists that they see 😅😅

I'm just about finished my BA and I'm going to go on and do a grad dip in psych. Philosophy in uni is similar we don't have to agree with the ideas we just need to support our arguments with other philosophers which I found really fun!!

I keep going back to the video, specifically where you talk about the content you study being mostly Eurocentic. As a former mental illness patient, i found myself not relating to most of the techniques that were applied in my case. The prospect of contributing to Pyschological knowledge from an African perspective remains an inspiring challenge.

I'm currently in my third year of a BA majoring in psychology and communication science. I really do enjoy what I study and actually enjoy university more than high school. In all honesty, I do not know which would be better for me, clinical psychology or counselling psychology. The main thing that I would like to do is help people deal with their issues since I didn't have that opportunity. At the end of the day clinical and counselling psychology can both help people so it's a really tough choice for me😬 Thank you for the content 👌🏻

Hey Lauren. Thanks for sharing such Info. I'm doing community and social service (mental and health) I really realized such information when I was doing my second year and I felt like giving up now I'm doing my Last final year, I feel like majoring in Criminology, Would it be advisable for me to do it since I can be a parole officer. What More can I do with my HONOURS? Can I also Major in Human Resource? My problem is that I can't keep on studying since I have Financial issues. I see myself doing Something that will benefit me with my Honours. Since it's hard now to find jobs in South Africa. Would it be Advisable for me to major with Such, that I just mentioned. I feel stuck😭

Don't give up if you're in your final year, you're so close! 😇 It's totally normal to feel stuck and unsure 🙌 Unfortunately I don't have the expertise to answer your question, maybe you should look into doing short courses that are aligned with what you are passionate about - it's less costly in terms of time and money but could help with future employment 🙏 I wish you all the best! 🌺

Hey can you please make a video on, what you sacrificed to get the distinctions and what to avoid as students that will hinder that. Your challenges as well as what you think went wrong that made you not make it into the masters program because in my eyes you did. You were so close and you should be proud of yourself for that.

Fantastic video! I Love it. This information needs to be heard. It is a long journey. I started back in 2013... I am currently doing my Masters in Clinical Psychology. You are right, you do have to be passionate. The competition is very high. It is not easy and when it gets to diagnoses in Clinical psychology, it gets complex. Hi there!! For the undergraduate and honours degrees as far as I know they only look at your marks so you just have to make sure they're as high as you can manage. It's also suggested that you attend therapy and that you volunteer at organisations that cater to people's mental health 🤗 I can suggest checking out cognitionandco.co.za/, they are a South African psychology student network who are really helpful 🙌

I have planned to major in psychology to become a clinical psychologist. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to because my parents weren’t convinced and I was forced to give up my dream, ended up going for biotechnology instead but I hope one day I could still get a degree in psychology after I graduate

Thank you for watching 🙌🏽 It’s actually quite the opposite, there is a huge shortage in terms of the amount of psychologists relative to the South African population! There are a lot of people who study psychology in their undergraduate, few make it to honours (20-40 people per class) and even fewer who make it into masters (4-12 people per class). So you have to be really dedicated to face possible rejection multiple times before you become fully qualified upon completing your professional masters programme 🙏

Hi there! 🤗 You’d definitely be able to do it even though you’re doing maths lit - it’s super basic statistics that’s really easy to learn and if you borrow or own a scientific calculator, it’ll be able to do a lot of the work for you 😂👏🏽

It really depends on the university, I would suggest going to the websites of the universities you want to go to and having a look at their prospectus - it will tell you which subjects you need and how high your marks need to be ❤️✨

You can do BA general then major in psychology (choose psychology modules). After completing your undergrad degree you’ll do your honours in psychology❤️

Every university has different requirements, check their website for their brochure which will show you which subjects you need. I can’t remember what my university’s requirements were as I applied over 5 years ago and bear in mind that they can change their requirements over time 🙏 It’s always on their website though

Hi, Lebo I am a second year student at Unisa also majoring in Psychology . I only realised this year that there was a statistics elective that BA students can choose from. Also, in third year level at Unisa , there is a module called Psychological Assessment, I think that will include some Math. I'm not entirely sure. But the structure of our BA degree is slightly different to several Universities. Lastly at Unisa in second year. You do Personality Psychology, Developmental Psychology and I ntroduction to Research in Social Sciences. On the Unisa Site search for your majors and you will see the modules you have to pick in Second year and Third year level. All the best with your studies ✨💕

Yes you can, most universities don’t require pure maths for the undergrad - for the postgrad courses they look at the previous degrees results - not your high school results 🙏

Hi, so far your video has been helpful to some of my questions. I, without a doubt, want to go into psychology. I have done my research and my fair share of volunteer work. the only problem I face is actually being accepted into a decent University. I am a white Afrikaans male and this has set me back considerably because of the current political climate. This has resulted in me having to follow the path I am expected to take (agriculture). It takes so much of me to not turn bitter and resentful which is taking it's toll on me. I don't know how to combat this, any advice that might help will be greatly appreciated.

I was also rejected this year, it’s difficult not to take it personally but they reject 80-90% of people who apply every year 😪 I wish I had advice but I’m experiencing the same frustration, I’m going to look into studying overseas and getting a scholarship to do so 🙏 I hope you get in soon, all the best 🙌🏽

Can you be a psychologist if you also have mental illnesses for example I have (ADHD, Bipolar manic-depression disorder and anxiety) I know they won't ask hey are you mentally ill befor you study psychology but can it idk make it worse? The reason I wanna be a psychologist is cause I went to many psychologists in my youth (lol I say that as if I'm not 17) but yeah I didn't like how they handled me so that's what made me wanna be one and do better.

None that I’m aware of that are explicitly psychology-related I’m afraid 😔 A lot of us just have to find our own paths - I worked as an assistant and call centre agent for my university’s student enrollment center 🙏

It depends on what type of psychology you want to do, for a Bachelor of Art (BA) in counseling/clinical psychology you just need English. For Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) industrial psychology you need English and mathematics (core not literacy). For a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in psychology you need life sciences, physical sciences and mathematics core 🌻🌻 I know it can be overwhelming with the options but do research so you can decide on what suits you ✨ All the best! 👏🏽👏🏽

A solid 59% 😂😂😩😩 For the module that required mathematics in university (research psychology) I got 98% for my exam (& 91% for the module overall) so there’s hope for anyone really 😂🙌🏽
