Definitely a possibility. I know they’ve started at the custom shop level with other artists in the past before working their way down to more affordable models.

While millions of fans who have picked up Strats because of John in the first place and Fender who are surely seeing huge dollar signs at the opportunity to do this would likely appreciate a deal being done, the only thing special about John's Strat for most of his career has been the relic, and for that reason I'd find it hard to justify the Signature. It was said to be otherwise stock specs early 60s Strat with American Standard pickups (probably Fat 50's) put in to replace non-working originals and a 9.5 radius below the 12th fret flattened from the original 7.25. John himself is alleged to have said there was nothing he could improve on from the original vintage models. Signature models make sense when the artists themselves are gear heads and add very specific features to the instrument (the EOB Strat is cool and interesting, the Johnny Marr Jag is super versatile, the Adam Jones LP has a ton of superstitious but cool special details). As much as it's wanted, it's hard to see the point of this one other than an excuse for Fender to charge even more for specs that are widely available for much less.

I also think that this will actually happen, mostly because that style of relic matches the Fender "Road Worn" style perfectly, which only can be found on Mexican made instruments. It is basically a relic template that they copy to all guitars. Just google "fender road worn" and you will notice that all guitars from one model have similar wear marks, even in the exact same spot - for example most Strats have a small round / oval buckle rash mark close to the back plate. The Fender Custom Shop relic style is very different, much more authentic of course. I think if the Fender Custom Shop had to make an exact replica of John's '62, we would not notice, at least not from pictures which are not close-ups. But if Henry actually IS right, and this will NOT be a signature guitar, my theory would be that these are just dummy guitars made to test new PICKUPS! There might be new pickups in the works (signature or not), and they would surely not install them in John's vintage guitars just to try them. We know that John experimented with pickups in his '62 before, so it would make sense that he continues his quest for different pickups. And as long as John currently just plays vintage guitars, they might just did not want to spend too much money for vintage test guitars or even Fender Custom Shop guitars. So I guess they just needed a generic guitar that looked close to his '62 so that fans do not bash him for playing a shiny brand new Fender.

I’m thinking the Mexican boxes could just be a disguise. Maybe they just use those boxes to send out prototypes in general so in case they are seen, it’s not a give away. Tbh, since John is such a vintage geek, I doubt he’d even touch a mim strat. From my experience, most vintage freaks look at modern custom shop usa guitars the same way we look at squier classic vibes “hey that’s cool that regular people can get a pretty nice guitar at that price, but it’s not (insert what you play here) 😂”

Agreed.. What is a Henry supposed to say, “yeah, John has a new signature model coming June”? No. Obviously we don’t know what is actually happening but if there was absolutely no model or anything in the works then why add “I don’t have anymore details at this time” ? That sounds like a “I can’t say anything about this, why would you think I could?” 😅🤓

Honestly, i dont think John is working on a fender guitar for purchase from fans. I think hes doing this for himselfm his 62 is a goldmine, and similar to slash's original AFD (which he tlretired from live shows due to its amazing one in a lifetime sound), john is looking to retire his 62 from live shows, from damage and such, and use a good replice/copy.

I’m pretty sure that isn’t new at all. I saw that strat in a rig rundown for Josh kloffinger. That’s chad smith’s guitar he lent it to Josh as a “tribute” since fans expect a sunburst strat on stage. Most likely just stayed in the tour rotation and now John is using it. It’s not uncommon as Josh also used johns telecaster his entire tenure.
