This week on Christories, we're talking about the THE OLYMPICS! The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece nearly 3,000 years ago and were first recorded in 776 BCE in Olympia. They were held every 4 years, a period known as an Olympiad, in honor of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. Only freeborn Greek men were allowed to compete in the ancient games. The modern Olympic Games were revived by French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the late 19th century. The first modern Olympics took place in Athens in 1896, featuring 280 participants from 13 nations. Today, the Olympics are the world's foremost sports competition, with over 200 nations participating.
The five Olympic rings symbolize the union of the five inhabited continents and the meeting of athletes from around the world. The modern Olympic flame is lit at the ancient site of Olympia and then relayed to the host city. The marathon was inspired by the ancient Greek soldier Pheidippides. The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Women first competed in the modern Olympics in 1900 in Paris. Olympic gold medals are actually made mostly of silver, with only about six grams of gold plating.

Great video! Fun fact: The Greeks didn’t always speak this way. We are steadily losing our pronunciation during the last 2 centuries. Cyprus still has some kind of pronunciation and other small places in Greece however due to globalization the pronunciation has been simplified. It is pretty easy now to learn Greek compared to ancient Greek. I could dig into it more it’s pretty interesting since there lies more history than we realize.

Great video, as always, Chris! Pankration was basically the early version of MMA 😅 I recently wrote an article on substack about the history of religion that I believe you might be interested in. Christians were the worst - suppressed everything, they caused the dark Ages and thankfully for the Renaissance, they opposed the suppression. Than again with the Enlightenment period.
