Thank u for reviews like this which showcase the shortfalls of the product. I just watched a few glossy videos about this product and there was little talk about the video quality. This is a very well priced drone but Ive seen some shockingingly choppy footage! No onboard recording was a huge oversight for this...

The last app version I see in the Playstore is 1.2.2 from Feb 13th. Are you on iOS. It works better on my ipad.

Its better if your phone is in Airplane mode too. Then connect with wi fi, signal is much better

You are one of the few reviewers who actually give your honest opinion about the video quality. I agree that whoever designed the drone without the built-in SD card should really be punched. Seems that decent video quality (not even decent 720p) is on a very low priority for the tello designer.

Make sure you have disabled Bluetooth before you connect to the Tello to improve video quality and set bit rate to high and quality to high

When I saw the tello first thing I noticed was the props. And thought .... Can I use these props on my custom brushed micros?

Drone On You probably can. They seem quite efficient. But brittle. Crashed it once, two props broke. Blades chip off near the hub..

thank you Todd! Yes, the Tello props are great. Very good power. Unfortunately quite fragile. Im trying to get better quality clones, but so far all I got was unbalanced crap.

Is there a chance video performance could be better or worse depending on the wifi device being used. Is there any way of selecting the wifi channel?

Yes, the device used makes a difference, as do a gazillion other factors. All of which would not matter when recording onboard. I didnt see an option to change WiFi channels or any Wifi setting at all.

With tello app update, those cuts in the video feed are wayyy less. And with an 8€ delivered xiaomi wifi extender, theyre gone

My not-so-smartphone actually cannot play back it's own(!) video recordings smoothly. I have also noticed its SD card interface is way slower than the SD card itself... I take it you used a good phone here?

Lieven van Velthoven it’s a Note3. It can record and playback 1080p video just fine, and is listed as compatible by Ryze.

I'm amazed you were able to fly so far away using wifi! I never get that distance with wifi drones. I've had wifi drones fly away that were not a quarter of that distance,

I hope you have turned off the Bluetooth, this makes a huge difference for the video quality. I also noticed, as is the smartphone compatible, the video quality can be very different

Yes, after making this video, I noticed that using an iPad with BT off and the new firmware on the Tello improves things. It’s OK now, but not great.

The Tello isn't as great as I was hoping. ZeroTech Dobby is much, much better (I got mine also for £99). It's good for photos only, but not for videos. So, I am taking it out with me, but only to take pics. Am sure they're working on a DJI Tello 2 already...Nice, honest review - thank you!

yeah, the video is weakest link. would have been so cheap and easy to add a micro sd card, and (say) 8 or 10Mbs it's probably deliberate. with that, it'd be a lovely useful cheap and fun tool - and probably cost dji a few sales ...

I dont think anything RTF currently competes at this price. But Im sure we will see products in the near future which do the same at the same price, and will have onboard recording.

When you are really taking a video you won’t be constantly moving the Tello and the video won’t be as choppy. Use smooth movements when you have to move the the Tello. Some people are very bad at video even with a hand held video camera. 😆

Fun to fly, but still jus a toy. Really the Spark is the cheapest alt to get decent video for semi-pro to pro use for under $1000(with controller).

Yes, I built one a while ago. Didnt make a video yet though ;) There is no point doing that with the original FC though, it just gets confused with more power. Needs a "sport" FC :)
