Thanks so much for that. Just want to say that your pragmatic and no hype approach is incredibly refreshing. Since you have posted a few different camera videos, would love to know which camera do you actually own, which do you use and which is the best camera in terms of image re Z Cam, Komodo, bmpcc6k, ursa 12k, mavo edge. I appreciate that the edge is significantly more expensive. Without wanting to preempt your answer what is it about the images that stand out. Thanks so much.

Thank you! I appreciate that. To answer your question: I own a Komodo, a Z Cam E2-F6 and a Sony a7iii. I just sold an E2-S6 not too long ago. Also recently owned a BMPCC 4K, GH5, GH5S...out of all of the cameras that I've OWNED, the best image thus far has been the RED Komodo. This comes down to personal preference though. Some people don't like the look of RED, but I do. I actually love it. Some like Sony's look more, some like Blackmagic's. But by far, I'm more impressed with what I get out of the Komodo than any of the camera's I mentioned, including the Mavo Edge 8K.

@@joenicklo hey thanks so much for that. I have the Komodo and fx6 c70 but have yet to really warm to any or either and have been looking for a cine camera for ages post the love hate relationship we all seem to have with bmpccs and needed to move up to 4K from c300. Went through 5d, gh5, a7sii and the bmpccs but been waiting for something pro. I had always liked z cam and had the e2 for a while but just never seemed that I could trust the company and it’s direction. Not exactly a line like canon and Sony and the f6 just always seemed a little to expensive given it’s lack of pro controls and features that the usual suspects in opposition had. Also really disliked the forums. That said there was always something about the image that I preferred over bm in the blacks though bmpcc4k and 6k have amazing images and workflow overall. I have always loved kinefinity image but although the form factor has been tidied up I can’t say that I think that the image is better from what I have seen if the edge. It must be but for a brand firmly living in the outskirts of town the price has always seemed difficult to recoup. As much as I have no love for Red and their toys for boys branding, on paper the Komodo seemed a good pro fit given how other cameras seemed to have shot themselves in the foot for one reason or another. The fx6 is really the only camera that seems to have everything but because I wasn’t invested in Sony lenses and kinefinity had lost out in the raw wars, the Komodo with r3d, rf, full frame option with speedbooster, cube, built like a brick shithouse, pro connectors and expanders, sdi, great app, decent screen control, auto focus which kinda works, Netflix approved and an ever expanding eco system seemed the only logical game in town. That said I do find the image a little hit or miss depending on light and what it’s shooting and painfully noisy. In general the image always seems to need nr and sharpening to feel alive. That said it can look magically expensive particularly on products cars etc. Would love to know your post and workflow if you ever have time to share it. Thanks so much for your vibe and continued pragmatic and insightful views. Always a pleasure.

I second pretty much everything you had to say. I bought the E2 S6 back in December coming from an A7s III. That being said I absolutely feel you when you say the menu is not user-friendly. I used it in January to do a fashion editorial behind-the-scenes shoot in NYC and I absolutely LOVED the footage. Tbh I love everything that comes out of this camera. After the shoot, my friend and I went into Times Square and did some run and gun shooting. And I would have to say it was extremely frustrating in that scenario for me. But for some reason, my HDMI feed started to cut out when the camera would stay on for more than 10 minutes or so and continued to do so. Since it was still in the return window I returned it and said that I would go back to the A7s III. Well... as soon as I picked up another A7s III for a shoot I immediately knew I was going to buy another Zcam because to me the image just doesn't speak to me the way the Zcam does. I know the issue I had is probably rare and that doesn't bother me at all about buying another one. I'm even willing to look past the gripes I have with the user experience because I believe the image is that good. The footage you let us play with a long time ago was a major reason why I eventually bought a zcam. Even after all things considered I don't regret trying the Zcam one bit. It is probably the best image I've ever got out of a camera I've had the chance to own. I might even go for the F6 this go-round. But I'll def use your link when I do. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm really glad to hear about the sample footage helping you make the decision to purchase. It shows me that I should keep doing that for camera reviews. I’ve shared with Z CAM my wish list for features on a new camera. It includes things like SDI. However, SDI brings with it the big problem of damaged SDI ports. The KOMODO is plagued with this issue so much that RED doesn’t even cover it under warranty anymore. I asked Z CAM to build in an isolation transformer so that if they do add SDI, it hopefully will be damage proof.

Great review man! Definitely looking to invest on a Zcam again, once they integrate a new body with SD1 ports 6g/12g, timecode, and hopefully internal ND. Secondly, would be the post-production workflows on Davinci. Lastly, the menu system, I'm not to worried about as the camera still turns on faster than red/arri cams and you can control the settings via the app on your phone/tablet, which makes getting through the menu that much faster. So basically if they can implement a touch screen interface on camera body, they should be good. ***(Previously a Zcam E2c, Zcam E2, E2-S6, E2-F6 owner)***

I have the original E2 and you nailed every problem. I hope they take notes for the next generation, also don't know if you try it but there is a custom Firmware for RAW, sadly you have to convert it after recording to a DNG sequence. AFAIK internal RAW is not possible due to a RED patent nonsense, a way to bypass that is through an external recorder, maybe ZCam can come out with a semiRAW approach as BM, or maybe an external modular recorder because the patent won't go away soon. Great Video!
@joenicklo2 жыл бұрын
Well, looks like we have external BRAW now with the E2-F6 Pro.
@JeremiahBostwick2 жыл бұрын
In general I agree with your position and points, but the things I emphasize are different. My big cons that you didn’t mention: is that there isn’t enough processing power in the E2 series of cameras. So the HDMI out changes resolution depending on codec/frame rate selected and will drop internal tools (if you’re using them, I don’t) if the camera is too “stressed”. The second and perhaps biggest issue for me that you didn’t mention is issues with post production support. I had Thatcher Freeman make me a DWG DCTL for ZLog2, and that has more or less fixed a big chunk of this problem, but the lack of having a proper CST in Resolve is a massive issue. I can more or less buy any other camera from Panasonic, Sony, Canon, BM, RED, whoever and expect there will be a proper log conversion. It’s the software end here that I think Z Cam needs to push almost more than anything else. Workflow is everything in high end productions. In terms of things you didn’t mention that I really love, the h.265 is a beast for us doc film workers. I literally just filmed today for 2 hours straight for some BTS, and 4K h.265 in 23.98 barely took up 128GB. Which if you’re doing any long form content is beautiful. Especially considering you get all the punch of ProRes (it just means processing it in post takes more system resources due to compression). Also as a side note, you don’t have to mount the SDI converter into the NPF slot, it’s just the most convenient place for it. It just means you’d have to run power to it through the barrel jacks on the face of it and find a way to mount it somewhere else. SmallRig has a mounting solution just for it. However I think for a lot of smaller setups mounting it elsewhere just makes it awkward. You can find it here: www.smallrig.com/smallrig-mounting-adapter-for-z-cam-hdmi-to-sdi-converter-2951.html

Good video and I agree with your points being an owner myself. Interesting that Premiere doesn't currently support Z-Raw (when the new upgrade took place) and you are saying that Da Vinci also doesn't support Z-Raw. I say it's interesting because when I mentioned this Prem problem to the the Facebook group, the response I got was try Da Vinci. Whereas the response from the z-cam team is extremely tight lipped and I have no idea why. So, is Z-Raw working at all? The other thing is I tried to load some LUTs are per your last video instructions and just failed miserably. I know I can see the LUT effect in the app on my phone (which oddly does communicate brilliant whether in Airplane mode or not) but I want to see them through the ninja and can't and this is very frustrating. Your main bug right at the beginning is mine, but ALSO, finally, this camera resets itself at odd times, so unless you continually dive into those menu, you'll find auto ISO has cut in because some other settings have also self set (like shutter for example after a battery change). The pictures you put up are very good, but I am, like you finding I need to nurse this thing.

Thanks for watching. My issue with the eND module was that it didn’t have a “0” setting. If I needed to remove ND completely, I needed to unscrew it and then store it somewhere safely. Screw the clear tray back in (which I also needed to store somewhere) and then repeat. At that point I figured “why don’t I just use a regular ND filter?” In my opinion, if you’re not going to use a screw on ND or a matte box for filters, it should be an internal ND that goes from 0 to whatever stops it can go up to cleanly. If you know that you’ll be ONLY working outdoors in the same environment at all times, then I guess the eND Is a good option. Just wasn’t good for me.

Z Cam is great. For me though, it wasn't an upgrade or "plus" to move from BM to Z Cam. I stuck with my BM Pocket 6Ks (might upgrade the pocket 4K, but the benefits of skipping out on variable f stops when using a focal reducer with zoom lenses is the main reason I keep it). One day, I'll move to the RED and Arri ecosystems as I see those as "decade" cameras if that makes sense. But for now, my focus is writing and being an amazing storyteller and move up to showrunner.

Everything in your comment makes absolute sense. I think that I got so frustrated with rigging the BMPCC 4K and was wanting the cube/square form factor so much that I needed to make a move. I will admit, the Komodo was my first choice at that time, but it was unavailable and I refused to pay the scumbag scalpers for one. So, I went with the E2-S6, and then an F6. I still love my Z Cam, and even though I've been back and forth on selling the E2-F6, I'll likely keep it as a low-light powerhouse and even a B/C cam.

F series cameras has ways to get around menu hell that ZCam doesn’t have. As an example you can program entire profiles on the FS7 and then change over to them using any of the programmable buttons on the camera. So if you need to switch rapidly between 4k 24p and 1080 180p, you can do that by simply tapping one button and “executing” if you want or need to. There is also the “my menu” system where you can assign the most used parameters, enter that menu with any of the assignable buttons, and then change them quickly. If Z Cam had either (or ideally both) of those two simple things, most of the menu diving could be eliminated. With a my menu section I could place resolution, frame rate, hdmi resolution, and codec next to each other as well as audio levels. Just having that as one option alone would drastically speed up Z Cam menuing. But there is no such option.

I have 2x z-cam F6, one of them is a very early one, so I have used them extensively. I have to say your negative 5 has some misinformation - I have never once set my phone into airplane mode on iPhone or iPad, I use it all the time, so I would say that downside is most likely due to your phone. - in turn the user experience via the phone is so fast, much better than operating a RED or a Sony or a cannon, having the iPhone hooked up makes this camera one of the fastest to use. - the combinations of codecs and frame rate and frame size, this is because we are getting the most out the camera, these options are giving us top value, and plenty of other cameras suffer the same Tip- use pro res LT … it looks great and does everything - RAW, your complaint about the lack of internal raw is not something that is an option. Originally Zraw was raw, but this is owned by RED so has had to be downgraded, If internal RAW is what you need or want then buy RED because they own it, (nowadays you can go cannon or Nikon …. But that’s a longer convo) Sdi out would be nice
@joenicklo Жыл бұрын
This is 100% not misinformation. At the time of recording this video (Feb 2022) the Z Cam control app required many users (not just me) to toggle their phone into airplane mode or turn off cellular service. It's a very well documented situation on the Z Cam user Facebook groups, by Z Cam staff themselves. Not sure which RED App you've used but the free DSMC3 app is absolutely amazing to use and it's leaps and bounds more robust than the Z Cam app. No lag, no issues with it. The Z Cam app is wonderful, but it's not on the level of the RED Control app. Yes, the combination of codecs and frame rates are wonderful. I felt I was very clear about my issue with that. In case I wasn't, I'll say that the problem isn't the abundance of codecs, it's the frustratingly convoluted process of cycling between the codecs. The user experience is frustrating to say the least -- it's definitely not just me that feels this way. Check the comments ;) Regarding RAW there is nothing we can do about it now but the entire ZRAW fiasco is unfortunate.

@@joenicklo you have 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and so on, Braw is contained in a 16 bit container as interpreted by DaVinci, doesn’t translate to that the camera and the Analog to digital converter in the camera samples RGB data at 16 bit per channel, it clearly doesn’t nor stated that it is 16 bit, it is 12 bit. No where have I seen evidence for Red capturing 65.336 tones per Channel totalling to 281 trillion colors in total. As I am aware not even Arri has that latitude and we all know who has the highest DYnamiC Range and color fidelity, Arri.

Sadly and unfortunately Z-cam Doesn’t have L-mount. Or I would’ve jumped on it.

Wonder why they don’t produce the mount. I’ve never seen an answer.

I love the camera, hate the company. Employees are rude, disrespectful, snarky. No firmware updates in a year, lack of transparency, shady practices. If the brand no longer exists in a few years, that wouldn't be surprising.

That could be a culture thing, not necessarily them being rude/disrespectful. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
