I’m a huge fan of buying once but SmallHD current structure leaves a lot to be desired with the add on purchases to get the feature you actually want . I’d hate to see them suffering the same fate as atomos who milked everything while new brands like osee and Portkeys close the gap , innovate include these “higher end “ features like el zone update . And best of all u pay once . There is a good reason a lot of red Komodo owners buy the Portkeys with red control . Even the Portkeys red control cable is reasonably priced if you don’t like wifi . Without this multiple licences nonsense

Hey Joe! Not sure if you go though and still replay to every comment/question, but I I was hoping you could give some input. I have a similar rig to what you have been using ... ifootage spider crab suction cup kit. I was filming a 1955 bel air and the camera was very rigid but the footage had a fair amount of micro jitters that made it significantly less appealing. I was wondering what shutter speed / frame rate you shoot at when you film with mounted applications? Thanks in advance
@joenicklo21 күн бұрын
Whats the camera you're using? Does it happen to have IBIS? Does the lens have Optical Stabilization? Those two things could cause vibrations even if the camera is completely stable/secure. Also, the iFootage kit lacks a top support. I think theres an optional support you can buy for the top.
@brycekiesel20 күн бұрын
@@joenicklo Hi Joe! I am using an A7IV. It both the body and lens have image stabilization. Are you saying I should turn them off to reduce vibrations? I have used the ifootage kit to mount the camera on the side of the car and in other manners where it is supported on all sides and the top.
@joenicklo18 күн бұрын
@@brycekiesel I'd definitely turn off the IBIS and try to use a different lens. Cameras with IBIS have a "floating" sensor. Even if IBIS is off, the sensor will still move. You might be able to eliminated the vibrations if you experiment with those variables. I'll give you an example. I used to shoot with the GH5 and GH5S. The S did NOT have IBIS. With cinema lenses on both cams, filming interior car scene, the GH5 would have micro vibrations. I narrowed it down to the IBIS. This theory was confirmed when I reached out to the production company that worked on The Grand Tour. I asked them why they were using GH4's for their in car and not GH5's. They said it was due to the IBIS. They eventually moved to ZCams and Komodos for in-car footage. Both cameras with no IBIS. Hope this helps.

Great vid! Do you notice any banding when applying a LUT from the monitor? The Indie is all great but its just driving me insane. Didnt happen to me with other cameras, just with RED. When I apply the lut from camera, it's fine though. Apparently this happens on SmallHD monitors. :/

Hi, I am using Blackmagic 5" video Assist and Portkey 5" BM 5 II monitors.
@AltuzАй бұрын
Hey Joe, as someone who has experience with so many monitors I have a question for you. Small HD is a bit out of my budget at the moment. I've been trying to decide between the Atomos Shinobi 7 and the Blackmagic Video Assist 7 12G. Ultimately, I'm looking for something that won't break down on me. I've been down the road of Feelworld monitors and the like. You mention in one of the threads on here that you've had experience with both. What are your thoughts?
@joenickloАй бұрын
Hey, I think the Shinobi 7 will work great for you. I used the Shinobi 7 and 5 before I got the Small HD monitors. There was nothing "wrong" with them. It came down to the camera control and Pages OS for me. I've had a lot of experience with the Ninja V and the Ninja Inferno and they too stood up to some tough shooting environments. My only issue with the Atomos monitors is their UI. It's not the best.
@AltuzАй бұрын
@@joenicklo Would you say the Shinobi 7 is the better option over the Blackmagic? I do love Blackmagic's UI, but I've also heard that the glare on the monitor is a big issue.

@joenicklo3 ай бұрын
That depends entirely on your situation. Are you filming on a regular basis? Are you using a wide range of lenses that require the modular design of the frame adapters? Are you looking for a piece of gear that will last you YEARS? In comparison, the ARRI LMB Matte Box is $2,280.00 USD. The Misfit Kick is right there with the ARRI. If you're just shooting on an FX3 with a $1000 lens, a $100 ND Filter on your $300 Tripod, there's nothing wrong with that but sure...go for a budget friendly matte box, but I'm not going to trust a cheap matte box with expensive filtration. When it comes to gear, I want stuff that will last me a long time. This is it.

Any tips for audio? I’m a videographer for a dirt track near me. I use a Canon R7 with a Movo VXR 10 shotgun microphone (I’m a beginner, first mic.) and with the camera audio gain turned all the way down, the audio still maxes out and I end up with some clipping. I’m hoping to gain some better audio of the engines in the cars at speed, but don’t want to spend a fortune on a shotgun microphone.
@joenicklo4 ай бұрын
There are some mics that have safety track options, like the rode video mic pro+. It also has a -10db feature that will knock some level off of the mic before it goes into the camera. Alternatively, there is external recording to a mixer that has 32bit float but that’s honestly a lot more than you might need as a beginner.
