Today we are doing some drift fishing out of Hillsboro Inlet, Fl. Our goal was to drift with live goggle eye as bait, do some jigging and bottom fishing while on the drift. I decided to harvest a barracuda for dinner to show people these fish are in fact delicious and safe to eat. Barracuda often get a bad wrap as being sickly fish that can spread disease, but this is simply not true!

This is my. first time seeing your channel. The fishing segment was great. I was married 59 plus years. My wife never went fishing with me. What a blessing to have that connection with fishing. The cooking segment was fantastic. I've caught barracuda in Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean and Southern California. I never have eaten one. I will try the next one. Great recipe. At 81 I'm leaving on a travel adventure in a small motor home visiting family and friends and fishing around the country. Sorry to be so long winded. Looking forward to seeing your posts. It is a pleasure to watch you and Brooke fish and cook. Here in California the barracuda do not have Ciguatera and do not grow as large. It is delicious to eat but you must not freeze them. It makes the flesh mushy and stringy. If you want the best flavor and texture, cook the same day on the grill or fried. Truly one of the best tasting fish here. Totally underrated. We use iron (Tady lures and such) and live bait to get them but iron isthe best since they can't fray the line. Thanks for the video.

That is the best way to rig a baitfish! Awesome tips. Everything was explained so well, if someone follows your instructions they will catch fish. Great information about Ciguatera. We were vacationing in the Bahamas, on Exuma island. The locals cooked at ate the Barracudas. I don't know if they know about the disease or they don't have to worry about it on that island. You are doing an awesome job with your fishing channel!

Where I live the economy is tourism based and the reefs get punished for it. Baracuda's near shore or especially near river mouths we never eat, baracuda's caught far outside the shoreline are safe to eat but you gotta have a boat or kayak to really commit to getting those.

@@ziggybender9125 Thank you for the info. It would be useful to develop a test kit to see if the fish is safe for human consumption. I've heard that if you cut a piece of the fish and put it outside and the bugs and ants eat it, it is safe to eat. It would be better to have an accurate test. Generally I stay away from eating Barracudas.

I'm one of the rare unlucky ones that got ciguatera poisoning in the Keys several years ago from a large cuda. While it's extremely rare, it does happen. The fish I had was fairly large and had been gill hooked. It wasn't going to survive so I figured I'd filet it for the grill. I was fully aware of ciguatera and knew of the risks but I had never had a problem with any fish in FL before and didn't even think twice about it. When it hit, I knew exactly what it was. The feeling of my lips and hands going numb/tingly was pretty scary. The fatigue and nausea was extreme and I had ridiculously heavy night sweats for almost a week. A pretty horrible experience all around. But, although I paid the price on that particular fish, I've eaten cuda since then....just the smaller ones, and from different areas. So, just be aware and ask locals about certain reefs known for cig and it might just spare you some serious misery.

I fished years ago in Belize, caught a HUGE (fisherman huge) Barracuda on the troll. Me being from Florida I was like "heck no I dont want to eat that" well captain kept it and guess what, no ice no nothing, just wrapped it in a towel for a few hours while we got to the next island. When we got there a restaurant chef (friend of captain) cooked it up and they shared it with the whole restaurant. I certainly ate it and it was GOOD! Guess what, nobody died but they all enjoyed a free fish meal in Caye caulker. So yeah Barracuda stinks but good to eat. Sure the smaller ones are better. Great vids man.

I catch plenty of Barracuda here in the Philippines though I personally never ate one. The old men who hang out near the docks where I fish ask me for them when I do catch Barracuda. A few of them did get some ciguatera-like symptoms but they were alright after a few hours sleep when I asked them about it the next time I saw them. Maybe I'll try it next time, they did say it's quite delicious when cooked as Sinigang, a type of stew here in the Philippines with a sour and savory taste.
