Thank you for even having this discussion. Kansas City Mo is my hometown and the lack of progress in the area of racism and opportunity for all saddens me. ANOTHER example is the attempt to integrate Southwest High School. Starting the conversation helps, I hope.

TROOST HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE DIVIDING LINE...I KNOW I AM 80 AND GREW UP IN KCMO...BUT TODAY THE DRUG CULTURE HAS CHANGED THESE BOUNDARIES AND THE PEOPLE...NOT FOR THE BETTER...BUT THE WORSE...

I live two blocks from Troost. When I first moved to this city, it was a dividing line. However, 47th and Troost is one of the nicest areas in the neighborhood. My gym is there, as is the motor vehicle department, moved from downtown. It's gleaming and new and there is nothing scary there. It looks like the Plaza, quite frankly, and I have absolutely no qualms going there at any time, day or night.

The city, county and state totally forced migration of very poor blacks from the old projects (that they tore down in the 1980's) out Southeast to the old Bannister mall area. The city (in secret) started buying up houses in Ruskin Hills and other nice, middle class, white areas, they would move Section 8 families in and then the white flight began, within a decade that whole area went black and the crime skyrocketed. Bannister Mall was the place to go, then the gangs moved in and now the mall is all gone. The housing areas are all run down and most are rentals, the government purposely picked southeast as the dumping ground and all the middle class people fled as fast as they could for north of the river or Johnson County.

And as a southern JOCO kid, most of what I still believe today is anything East of 71hwy is risky traveling. I don’t want to be racist, I believe in integration and repairing what’s broken, but identifying issues is a start, and this is one of them.

The truth is at one time the city had many lines you had the black line you had Italian line you had Irish lines you had German lines you also had lines against Catholics yes part of it was racist the other part of it was that's also where everybody wanted to be. But to say that Troost is a dividing line still... it's not.... get out you control your own destiny

My family moved to North Kansas City, MO in 1960. There were a lot of jobs and some Black folk worked there. But they better not be there after sun down. Police would find them. Initially, I couldn't figure out why there were no people of color, including Asians and Mexicans. Living there. Sundown city. 1967, I got a part time job at Paseo HS. East of Troost. Integrated. Blew my mind. Several years later, a woman friend suggested I buy a house east of Troost, a block from her house, which she thought would be $10K. I regret I did not buy it. I was a young guy who liked being on the street. It was interesting, not dangerous (to me). I think my friend hoped I would look after her 14 year old white daughter. If she had just explained what she wanted, (supposing I was right) I would have. This article leads me to think that race relations in KC have not improved since I left in 1980. Hard to believe. I live in Denver and consider moving back: probably a mistake. Crime in KC was rough when I lived there, 1960-1980. Regardless, I liked the place. Perhaps worse now.

if you say you don't see color, then the leftist blacks and whites will call you a racist. You are supposed to admit you are a racist and beg them for forgiveness.

I imagine if you are not where you exercise racism you are not a racist. They damn sure get taxes from the east side of Troost. J.C. Nichols must have designed every city in America huh. I remember getting used books with how those none racist feel about who ever would get to use it next. Wish I had kept a couple of them.
