My wife has about 180,000 miles on her 2017 CR-V. It was consuming about a quart per month which is about 2000 miles. I check the level and add oil every month. I just did the third change with Restore and Protect in the 0W20 weight and when I checked the dip stick recently I noticed the oil consumption has slowed. Excellent! Lake, I put this in my 2012 Camry and noticed the mpg gauge begin to go up. I’ve changed my oil every 5k from Toyota dealerships since I've owned it but around 170k it would burn oil. Prior to VRP I was using Amsoil High Mileage, which is a great oil but it didn't increase my mpg as fast as the VRP and only after 300 miles of putting it in. So this product begins to work immediately. Can't wait for your comparison with Amsoil vs Valvoline Restore and Protect.

I've been using it in my 01 Ram 1500. Idle is smoother, less oil consumption, and I see the oil get darker in appearance earlier compared to Pennzoil and other Valvoline products. This indicates to me that Lake is correct - it is doing a great job of thoroughly dissolving deposits.

Now quit putting that snake oil nonsense in your gas and and you'll do even better. Like with the oil the chemists that developed the gasolines you use know exactly what should be in it, and here comes you along thinking you're smarter than them. I'm a professional high performance engine builder with 40 years experience building racing engines, we go to great lengths machining the tops of valve stem guides to press on the latest modern seals to keep oil out of combustion chambers to eliminate detonation which is paramount for performance, nothing will cause detonation faster than oil inclusion in a combustion chamber, you're losing performance and mileage because your knock sensor is pulling timing out and richening your mixture, in an older non ECU type vehicle you'd hear detonation from putting oil in your gas, the very thing a performance engine builder goes to great lengths to eliminate and your actually mixing it in, serious face palm moment here. Just like how Lake made a video about oil additives being snake oil nonsense that you should never use because the chemists who develop these oils know exactly what they're doing the same holds true for gasoline, the people who make it are very smart, don't go thinking you're smarter than they are.

@@bjg6695 Here's the problem with your thinking, when's the last time you saw a car in traffic that was smoking? A long time ago, 40 years back you couldn't go into town without seeing at least one car that had oil smoke coming out of it's exhaust, now you MIGHT see that once a year, and it ain't gonna be from worn rings, a cracked one maybe but not worn out rings. With all due respect to Lake when we're talking about what goes on inside a combustion chamber that's my field of expertise, he's concentrating on wear but at the same time ignoring other factors, you're losing mileage and performance worrying about something that just doesn't wear out anymore, rings are lasting the lifetime of these modern engines even for these people who don't take care of their engines the way they're supposed to, bearings and everything else is what goes out in today's engines, but not rings, long gone are the days of having to "re-ring" an engine during its lifetime, I tear down engines every day and it's been years since I've seen a ridge at the top of a cylinder that's required a ridge cutter to remove the piston, cylinder and ring wear is virtually non existent in today's engines, I tear down engines with hundreds of thousands of miles and you can still see traces of the factory cross hatching on the cylinder walls, 40 years ago when I'd tear down an engine with 60,000 miles on it there wouldn't be any cross hatching left and there'd be a ridge at the top of the cylinder, the tool companies probably can't even sell ridge cutters anymore because no one needs them. Putting that nonsense snake oil in your gas for the sake of top end wear is cutting your nose off to spite your face, and you're fooling yourself believing you have proof of anything anyway, you can't do/change two things at once and look at results from tests, you have no "controls" over your testing and results, tests must be done with only one thing changed at a time. Once again leave what's in your gasoline to the people who make it, they know best, all oil and gas additives are snake oil.

This is a comment I read on another video on R&P: I work in the oil industry as a lubricant specialist, and there is something people need to know about this oil. It is running a higher than average detergent package which is why it is able to clean the carbon from engines better than your typical full synthetic oil. However, the reason you don't see high detergent packages in common oils is due to seal degradation. These detergents can dry out and corrode seals and non-metallic gaskets quite a bit. If you run this oil to clean out an engine for a couple of rounds that is ok, but I'd highly recommend going back to a standard full synthetic oil afterwards. Preferably use a high mileage full synthetic with seal conditioner and seal swell
@garyganser24513 сағат бұрын
I think in another video, Valvoline said it is custom molecules that make this unique. That is not the same as adding more traditional detergents. I guess the next test we need is how this oil compares with Valvoline high mileage on seals.

@@garyganser2451 Yes, it would be good to see seal and gasket studies of RP vs standard synthetic oil. I bought a 2025 Honda Pilot with GDI, and am not a fan of GDI engine design, so I was planning to use RP all the time. In addition to preventing carbon on piston rings, I have read that the RP additive package also travels with any oil mist going through the pcv valve, so it should also help prevent carbon build on top of the valves. There is also a small amount of oil that seeps past the valve stem seals and runs down the valve stem. The additives in that oil should also protect the tops of the valves.

Im "geeked" about trying this oil in a used vehicle we recently purchased for my daughter in college. We bought a 2009 2.4L pontiac vibe (which contains the infamous Toyota oil consumption engine). I believe the culprit is those low tension rings, coupled with deposits. The car currently has about 164000 miles. Since Sept, I am calculating "consumption" at about one quart per 1000 miles, on the original supertech synthetic that i initially installed. Since she is usually away at college, I have had to show her how to keep close tabs on her oil. Even though there is only about 3500 miles on the supertech, I plan on installing this Restore and Protect, in the coming weeks. In fact, I have already purchased it. My goal is to hopefully reduce or eliminate the consumption rate. Based on everyone's review, I have recently installed it in my own 2010 Nissan Altima and my sons older impala. Neither of those vehicles burn oil but it can't hurt to clean up higher mileage vehicles. I plan on installing it in my wife's newer 2.0L turbo equinox too, in the future. In the past, I have mostly used Mobil 1 synthetic and (more recently), supertech, on our vehicles. Always couple them with a quality filter too.

I ran it about 5000 miles, I do a lot of highway driving and not too much city driving, but what I do drive is VERY short trips, not the best for engine life. I noticed a difference in engine idle within a couple of days, my MPG increased after the first tank fill-up and has increased 4 MPG total. I have changed the oil multiple times now using this oil, coming up on 400,000 miles. My MPG stabilized at +4, the idle quality is better than ever, performance is better than ever, and even the annoying 5.3 piston noise on cold start goes away much, much quicker now. The only reason I can give for that one is less build up on the pistons and better heat absorption into the piston, so it gets to operating temperature and size faster, which what you want. You don't want the little guys bouncing and slapping around in there cold any more than they absolutely have too. The ONLY thing I have changed during all of this is the oil, I've used same filter brand, size and style, same fuel, same air pressure in the tires to the 1/2 lb., and haven't touched the air filter it's a K&N style. I have to credit the oil. My dipstick was almost black with carbon and now looks brand new. I'm sold.

Am I missing something or is it ok to run the HPS in a newer vehicle to KEEP it good and clean and well protected?

Hey TMOG, Thank you so much for making these kind of scientific videos. There's not many people doing yt videos like you, with real testing and not just empty words. I watched your valvoline test facility vid and wanted to suggest getting a camera stabilizer for those "in terrain" not studio recorded videos. Did a quick google search and I think something like a DJI Osmo mobile would work great. Cheers from Chile.

I just put the Restore and Protect in mistress's Honda Crosstour. She works about 5 miles away and she does not drive far enough in winter to properly heat the oil and her engine has varnish as a result even using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum changed every 3,000 miles. She is also getting moisture on the filler cap. I told her she needs to take a longer drive somewhere every week to remove moisture. After a few hundred miles the oil still looks clean and the looking through the oil filler hole I don't see a difference yet. Probably the oil needs a higher oil temperature promote cleaning then it has been seeing. I wonder if cold winter temperatures reduce the cleaning efficiency, if so they should note it on the oil container.

I would be interested to hear how many longer trips it takes each week in winter. All of my cars are driven more miles, but I have friends who drive less and all I can say is every week they need to take it further (like 10 miles). I don't really know if that is often enough.

Don't hold it against me, but you really don't want your wife to take frequent longer drives, she might meet somebody ;), rather let her destroy her car before time.

I just put VRP in my 15 Tacoma with 65k. I’ve only got about 500mi on VRP. I’m not expecting miracles, but I figure it can only help. In my 91 non-turbo MR2 it’s helped with oil consumption already. It was at about 1qt per 2k miles. Right now with 2500mi on the VRP it was only down about 1/2qt. So it’s doing something.

Might have to try that in one of high miles cheap vehicles I have for running around the farm with. I just change the oil every 3-5K miles with good synthetic oil and that seems to improve and clean. I have not tested anything.

Tried this stuff in my sisters 2013 Hyundai accent with 155K miles. she had just gone 7k miles on an oil change and when I checked the oil and she was down 2 qts on an engine that only takes 3.5qts. So first I yelled at her for trying to ruin her car then I put in 5w 30 restore and protect instead of the 5w 20 it calls for. I did the first oil change at 1600 miles because i was worried about all the sludge I saw. It only burned one tenth of a qt in that time. Will do 3k on the next change and then see how it goes. I'm having fun with this engine because I can actually see the sludge slowly coming off the oil fill tube on the car and I can tell it's burning less oil. I think it's a great oil for these little direct injected engines. Running it in my 207K mile toyota v6 too but that engine with 5K changes its whole life is harder to see any changes and that thing does not burn oil. Thanks for the awesome video!

My old Mazda truck is burning oil like mad. The engine was built 15 years ago, machined on the tighter end and NPR rings used . A compression test shows 170 psi on each cyl. and no bore scoring . I’m currently on my first run of restore and protect. It will be interesting to see what my first sample looks like. I was going to in-frame it but I want to see what this oil can really do.

I just wonder how much additional benefit there is running the Valvoline R&P vs a good quality full synthetic and being religious about oil changes. I know Amsoil claims to keep your engine squeaky clean if you run it full time. May have to give the Valvoline a shot in my old F150 with a 150K mile 4.2. Been super consistent about 5 to 6K mile oil changes and running full synthetic oils for the last 6 years. Due for a change now. Good video and good info!

Hey @Motorgeek - love this video! I like the idea of looking at the dipstick as a pressure test on the Valvoline R&P. One of the things I will be doing on my channel is monitoring the buildup near the fill cap. There is some buildup around that area, and it looks like sludge. Question for you, would you ever consider running VRP in your vehicle(s) indefinitely? Why or why not? Thanks in advance!

Too bad my local Walmart sells it for $30 but is always out of the 5W-30. I went to the three big name auto parts stores and they all wanted $40 and none would match it. One even called Walmart and verified it was in stock and they still couldn’t match it. But hey as long as the shareholders are happy that’s all that matters right!

I switched my wife’s kia over to this, 229k miles on it and I’ve been using Motorcraft 5w20 in it with Motorcraft filter, Ford tech lol. I have always went 7-8 k on the oil changes cause the oil was always clean looking and it looked clean in the engine from what I could see. It’s got 6k on it with the clean and restore and the oil looks dirty and I’m planning on changing it cause of it. I hope the oil consumption cuts down on it. That’s the main reason I switched it. We’ll see, fingers crossed. By the way,? As of now it seems like it’s burned the same amount of oil, in 6k miles, 2 quarts I think.

It most likely will, there’s no magic sauce that other manufacturers aren’t aware of. It just has more of the normal detergents that in large quantities can cause problems. if you are having some trouble with stuck rings or similar using it once or twice might be a good idea, but not over a long-term. In a new engine, it may even be detrimental. At the end of the day, Who cares if there’s some varnish buildup on the internal parts if it’s not causing any issues.

I’m using it in my 5 cylinder Volvo in an attempt to help consumption. Unfortunate, a couple changes in consumption is slightly up, but I’m going to try a bit longer. On bright side, I did oil analysis and the wear at 5000 miles was very low just like Lake is showing in the video. 4ppm iron on mine. Shame it is consuming more than euro oil, or I’d use it forever.
