➡ For those that would like my hand-painted colour swatch with all 216 Fanatic colours, please grab it here: www.patreon.com/stahlytaleofpainters/shop ➡ FAQ & clarifications: 1. The Army Painter confirmed to me that they didn't change the formula of their washes. They suggested that the Fanatic washes I got perform slightly better because they arrived to me fresh out of the factory, while my reference washes from the old range are a couple of years old. In the past, I have often experienced production fluctuations with Army Painter products, which might be another explanation. 2. Are you sponsored by The Army Painter or any other company? No. I receive free review samples but don't take any payment or sponsoring, and companies that send me their products don't have a say in the type of content or review I produce. As I cooperate with several hobby companies, I am not dependent on the goodwill of a single company, so I'm not shy of voicing my opinion. I like to compare myself to an independant movie or game critic, just for paints. 3. But you thinned the yellow, orange, and red, they would have covered better if you didn't! Yes, but then they would have been so thick that detail would get lost and the finish would be streaky.

19:21 It defeats the purpose of having a range of colors in each hue, but you can easily mix an olive to your liking quite simply. As you will see from playing with the palette in an image editor, olive is _not_ green; it is a very dark yellow -- start with pure yellow -- RGB 0xFFFF00 -- and reduce the brightness. As the shade darkens, it turns from yellow to olive. One example of this in the real world is zinc chromate anti-corrosion paint used by the US military during WWII; when a single layer of paint was applied, it was the base yellow zinc chromate; when a second layer was applied, black was mixed into the zinc chromate to make an olive shade (which shade depended on the factory based on how much black was added) so that workers could visually identify where a second layer had already been applied.

❤ the video. Balanced review. A few thoughts: 1. These are probably the best paints that the Army Painter has ever made. 2. Army painter is available everywhere, making this a collection I can restock easily when I use them up. 3. I’m a combo speed paint 2.0 and acrylic painter, so I feel like I have a solid, compatible color system from one manufacturer. 4. I satin varnish all my minis at conclusion for protection, so I don’t mind that these dry satin. 5. I’m really tired of decanting Citadel paints into dropper bottles, so will likely now only buy colors that have no equivalent. 6. The flexible triad system makes it much easier for someone like me with less artistic intuition to know that I’m picking the right highlights in the right family. 7. Cost is a big win. This looks to be high quality paint at an affordable price point.

I have a Battletech force that uses the Dragon Red spray/paint as it's base and I'm waiting for some of the new Kickstarter mechs to finish it up, so I think I will pick up and extra can and bottle of the current paint so I can have a consistent look across the whole force.

My personal preference is a thicker paint that is thinned as needed. Airbrush paints are my go to when I want prethinned paints which are often still really good layering paints or blending. Having a single range that covers a lot of bases, technical paints and speed painting options is valuable in its own right. The current mid to high end market has a glut of options (but availability and shipping mitigates it's use to entry level markets) and now thankfully with Army Painter picking up their ranges quality over all the low to mid end is also covered again. GW still often rains supreme but that's more to do with having high street locations/consumer facing stores. 👍

Thanks a lot Stahly! I really enjoy your thorough reviews! Please keep them coming. As per your question concerning finish, I personally prefer a slight satin sheen to my paint just like Two Thin Coats or Citadel. It just looks more vivid to me. But then again there are varnishes so that’s that :) May I ask a question? Since I am a bit of a notorious painting collector myself, I have amassed a lot of paints over the years and probably will expand to the Army Painter. So where did you get your black storage boxes shown in your videos? I’d love to purchase them! Bei 0:22 Würd mich über ne kurze Info freuen! Weiter so mit den top Videos! :) Oh Edit: Since you are such a fan of Two Thin Coats, did you experience some problems in consistency as well? I purchased Vampire Fang three times at different vendors and all of them are just a thick, gloopy almost unusable mass :/

Die nennen sich "Euroboxen". Gibts in verschiedenen Größen und Höhen, ich benutze die mit 12cm Höhe, und dazu Einsätze von Auer Packaging. And yes, my Vampire Fang is also a bit gloopy. But it's really the only colour that has this, and with a vortex mixer it's alright.

Is there really a "best" color anyways? Everyone prefers different things for different reasons. Besides that, one has to be careful about hype. Those paints seem to be nice, but do you REALLY need a few hundred bucks of new paints, when you got a shelf full of paints which also worked pretty well the last years? I will test them out, but I will only buy the small bundle and if they are really up my alley slowly start to replace paints when I run out of certain colors.

Solid review but I would prefer a more explicit disclosure about how you got the product. I realize there’s text at 2:27, but only listening to the video you later on say how you “acquired the paints” for testing. Wouldn’t be clear to audio-only listeners whether you bought the paints or were given them for free for review purposes.

Thanks for the feedback, noted! I usually get all the paints and products I review as free review samples, but otherwise don't take any form of payment. Companies also don't get a say in the type of content I create.

For transparency’s sake: Stahly is offered preview products much like other media outlets with an agreed upon media embargo date. That allows content creators and testers time to properly review and get to know the paints. As a policy, we do not pay any entities for reviews. They are only compensated with the product they feature in said review.

I prefer my pro acrylic for everything but my metal paints, and I'm not sure that I love how thick these fanatic paints are compared to my Vallejo metal color though. It doesn't look as good of a finish imo, and it's definitely thicccc. I'm having a hard time seeing why I would buy a huge amount of paint from them, when I have so many that even your video says are on par or better. This paint line would've been so good 4 years ago. It would've changed the game. Still I'll be interested in seeing some of the effect paint, washes, and the specialties.

A bit curious, but as some one who has a lot of the new Army Painter Air paints.. are these much better than those? Sounded like the new Air line had a lot of similar improvements, but I don't have a lot of the science or experience with them (or the new ones, obviously) to know. The new ones are kinda expensive, so I'm curious how they compare with the new Airs before I get excited.
@stahly_taleofpainters11 ай бұрын
I think they're different. Air paints are pre-thinned for airbrush use, these are muuuch thicker, more like Citadel Base paints or Vallejo Model Color paints.

My favorites out of the range so far have been the magentas and warm skin tones. Them in combination make for some absolutely beautiful tan skin tones. I look forward to finding more great mixes. That said, I use a bunch of different ranges in combination. I rarely stick to one.
@FuriouseMiniatures11 ай бұрын
im a bit confused with the testing. Why would you thin it a bit with a drop of water when you are testing to see if light colors can act as one coat? Isn't that messing up the paints ability a bit?
@stahly_taleofpainters11 ай бұрын
Out of the bottle the yellow, orange, and red are too thick to apply it to a mini, they would smother the details quickly. Hence they needed some thinning.

They have a very nice turn your brain off property about them. Grab these, Grab a shade, grab the next color down, repeat for however far you want to go into the highlighting. I do feel the range could have been tightened up a bit, there are quite a few tones that are pretty samesy, and as many have said the paints seem to have a heavy level of white in them leading the selection to feel very pastel. I really like all the washes, though some of them are kinda samesy as well. looking at you Sepia, Soft tone, light tone, and rust tone. You only briefly touched on pricing though, and if you actually are able to purchase the huge complete fanatic set of 216, it’s $3.50 per bottle, and you also get 4 very nice brushes and 2 mixing balls per bottle, which probably amounts to around $35 value, making the paint set final cost about $3.35 USD per bottle (before tax). That’s the absolute best price in the business, for a set of paints that has everything, rated 8.5/10 by this video. That’s the main reason I ordered the complete set. It’s an unbeatable deal.

Fanatic seems pretty good, but Vallejo still seems hands down the best proposition in general: can get it for 2.3Eur per bottle and no need to get a set for the discount (except the xpress line), great consistency across the range, and I prefer matte as a standard since I was used to Citadel getting glossier and glossier after 1 coat until I had shiny tree leaves/wood details after 2-3 thin layers 😢 Also they are great mixed with water, and have insane shelf life as well (have 20 year old paints still working fine!).
