I've been working with UPS for 14 years and the key to my survival was to stop caring. If you care too much of how things actually work and wishes it was different then it would only lead to stress. I work the sort aisle and boxes are falling to the ground. I could shut down the belt, but that would only make supervisors complain. So leaving them on and letting the sups see the disaster that they created is just another way of throwing the problem back to them. In the end, the job eventually gets done, I get paid and I get to go home.

I worked for UPS for 21 years 12 of those years was part-time. I worked at a small center, not a hub that is the subject of this story. A lot of what is said in this video is true but some are not. First, the pay gap isn't true as told by this video. When I went full time after 12 years part-time I had a 2-year wage freeze until my pay caught up with the wage progression of full time. They still paid me the highest of the 2 wages. I think then full-time wage stared at 12 an hour and I was around 20 an hour. It is grunt work for sure no lie there and the pressure from management as well as the treatment is spot on in this video. The security as told here is because it is a hub, not something you would see at most centers. Every employee from any company as big as UPS thinks that their job is the hardest but truth be told full time or part-time as a long list of pet peeves. I am not a big fan of the Union but is something that is deferent from one shop to another. It is also something that the employee help or hurt. I have seen great things and very bad things in my years at UPS. One great thing is that when I was part-time my health insurance was better than my dad who worked at the state university as faculty. The work is hard and fast paced the boss is demanding and many times unfair but in the end, I made part-time what most make full time and as full time I made 6 figures. Some people can cut it and others can't simple as that.

It’s also only my third day and each day has gotten worse and worse it’s almost like they’re just expecting me to speed up production each day even though they should be following their newbies 30 day start-up which means you aren’t under as much stress as others. I’m just done I’m literally quitting and I don’t even want to do business with that company. Been working at UPS here in Dallas for a few weeks now, and it it's exactly the way you described it, if not worse. I'm a package loader on the largest belt in the facility and it is very physically demanding. Packages literally flying of the belts everywhere because there are so many. And they want you to place the packages in the trailer a certain way, but they also want you to move very quick. You can't do both, it's speed or efficiency. The benefits are incredible and the opportunities to advance to being a driver or management are good. But most quit before they get there and I don't blame em.

My question regarding UPS, why does my package take three days to five days to move from the initial UPS facility to the next (regional?) Location??? Example: I order a laptop, the next day a electronic shipping notice is sent to UPS, if this is a weekday UPS will pick up my box late in the afternoon, the next day I've advised that the box arrives at another UPS location.....there it sits.......3 days if it's during the week, 5 days if there is a weekend in the process. Next my package is picked up and arrives in North Carolina which is further east than the original Ohio or Tenn location, from NC it finally heads west, 36 hours later the package is somewhere in Texas, then Kansas, then Colorado, Los Angeles finally Phoenix, and I get the out for delivery notice. This is the worse case, but you would be surprised how many packages head to LA before doubling back to Phoenix. I've had some packages 2-3 day air get stuck in Wilmington, Ohio for 5 days. One thing I really hate is missing a "sign for" shipment, so taking the notice I drive to a warehouse out in the middle of nowhere Tempe, AZ I wait in line hoping that I get inside before the clock turns 6:30 pm and it closes. Finally at 6:29 pm I get inside, hand the notice to the clerk, who punches in the package number then walks back into the warehouse for 5 minutes to return to tell me the box hasn't yet returned to the facility. You sign the notice so they can just leave the box at your doorstep, but NO, you find out that the box is being held for you back at the UPS facility 30 miles away in Tempe. Grrrrrrr Then there are the small packages that move from UPS to USPS to be delivered in your box at the end of the street set of 100 boxes. But if the dumb ass USPS employee places my package in the wrong box which she does at least twice a week, then neither UPS or USPS takes responsibility.

You had to wait a year because that is part of the new contract for people in warehouse. Before they had benefits right after passing their probation. But now they must wait a year. David, how long did it take you to fully get the hang of the preload position? I've been working at my local UPS as preloader for the past 3 weeks and I just can't get the hang of it. The heavy physical part doesn't bother me, it's having to keep up with all those damn boxes and packages bunched up together on the belt, and making sure you put them away in the right truck and shelf before the rest of the other boxes on the belt don't end up out of your reach. I'm going to give it until the end of November, and if I still can't get the hang of it by then, I'm just going to put in my 2 week notice.

If you want to drive you just have to have the mindset that you'll be working 10-11 sometimes 12 hours every day and be good with that. I mean REALLY be good with that and understand and accept it. You'll be at the bottom of the pay scale so they will load you up being you make the least amount of money. You and your loved ones have to understand that and that can be hard as no one really knows what we go through working at UPS unless you've been in our shoes. You will never really know your end of shift depending on volume fluctuations, could be a 10 hour day or a 12 hour day and you never know till that morning. You're there to make the money, but at the same time it's hard to tell your woman you're not sure what time exactly you'll be home tonight. If you and your family understand that then you will be golden, good money, great benefits and a pension. The driver job is a marathon and not a sprint so make the money...

You're preaching to the choir, brother. Good post btw. I endured three Xmases at UPS in night sort, preload, etc. Cracking the whip, mistreatment and disrespect was the typical modus operandi of management who seemed very unappreciative, often accusatory and unfair. After my first Xmas, my roommates thought I should have gotten into body building because I was ripped with the six-pack to prove it but it took a toll on my body. (btw don't you think it's foolish for wimpy male management to anger and physically challenge someone as physically strong as most of the people who move heavy boxes for 6+ hours?) After the third Xmas I swore I would never go through another one and never have. Btw the union was a joke out West, on the East Coast I worked in a strong union city and the union had my back but you're basically a pawn between the union's and management's games, no matter how good of a worker you are. Initially, I got lucky and had a good upper management guy who looked out for me because I worked hard, but after he retired I was left twisting in the wind. As for the searches, after getting the third degree needlessly once without absolutely any merit (being an honest person scores no points with these cretins), I was stopped at the guard shack, where they were searching everyone, I stated, "I've clocked out, I'm on MY TIME and I'm leaving. That's my car over there, call the police and have me arrested so I can sue you for false arrest. DO IT, I DARE YOU!" Of course nothing happened, they've got no huevos when it comes down to it, besides they know they mistreat people for no reason, they deserve the bad employees they have because they run off the good ones by treating them like caca.

I haven't heard of any of our package handlers getting write ups because they mis-loaded something. Its a fairly common occurrence, I guess UPS got tired of it and started disciplining people. They are unionized though so I would have thought that would be more rare. Do you not have a steward on the job there or something?

It's not AS bad because(depending on where they stick ya) you're either doin unload off of those FedEx sorta truck things. And we have 2 rollers and 1 conveyer. The rollers are manual, you push em wherever, and they're on the same level as the conveyer, you grab a package, scan it, and put it on the conveyer. We get 1 "bulk" truck. If you're on load, all you do is either stack packages or scan em and send em.

Depends on the center. He’s not spewing bs. I work for UPS, and have for 5 years. Break is only 10 minutes. PERIOD. And we have to fight to even get that. We all basically have to walk away from work in order for them to give us break, and once we do, right at the 9 min mark theyre already yelling “BREAKS OVER!!!”
