The biggest thing that helped me with my splits (that you won't hear many people talk about) is to take breaks. It's not good for your body to tear your muscles down over and over and over again without giving them time to properly rebuild. If your schedule allows, try to take perhaps one or two days a week off from stretching. This is what made the difference for me. I've been in the boat of stretching every single day for months, and it did get me into my left split, but it was a tight and painful process. My karate instructor (yes, I'm a dancer and a martial artist) recommended that I take breaks from stretching to allow my muscles to heal and to rebuild. What I now do is stretch thoroughly Monday and Tuesday, mildly or not at all on Wednesday, thoroughly on Thursday, and mildly or not at all on Friday. I normally don't stretch over the weekends. My schedule isn't ideal or perfect, but I've noticed significant improvement after only a few months. I got my middle split, and every time I stretch my muscles are relaxed and slide into the splits easily. My best split days are Monday and Thursday, because my muscles have healed and loosened after a day or two of rest. So if your schedule allows, I highly recommend working in a couple of "break" days every week. And drink PLENTY of water! Oh, and for reference, I'm naturally UNflexible. So if this works for me, I believe it could work for nearly anyone.

how I got my splits as an inflexible person: I stretched everyday for about six months, for the first few months I made myself stretch everyday no excuses, and on the days I had dance class at school I still made myself stretch when I got home. it took me 6 months to get my left and I'm 3 inches away from my right.

Awesome video! Thank you! I am one of those people that actually CANNOT do my middle splits. So frustrating! I have been a dancer for 10 years, I stretch every day, and I just cannot do the middle splits. Is it annoying, yes. The positive side is that it makes me work harder to make the rest of my dancing even better, since I don't have the gorgeous flexibility that other dancers do.

Last February I was working hard to get my splits/overall flexibility and would do them every day. One of the days I was stretching I felt a lot of pain in my left hamstring and it wasn't until the next year I received physical therapy (which did not help in this situation but did an amazing job as to explain how my body worked) so the next step was to go see a doctor. Basically the doctor told me that my hamstrings were super strong, but they may have been stressed. Long story short, what I figured out was that I had been jumping into all this stretching when perhaps my muscles were shortened/dehydrated. Like many people in the comments were suggesting, taking a day or two off in between probably would've saved me from my year long pain. When you stretch, your muscles tear and have to build up, and I only kept letting them break leading to higher tension. So my advice would be to take those little breaks in between the week (or do some very minimal stretching), make sure you're hydrated, warm, and that you roll out the tension in your ligaments. Happy Stretching everyone!

When I’m consistent, I can gain flexibility quite easily. However, inconsistency is my biggest hurdle.🥴

I have an audition coming up for an academy in March and I always found flexibility something I struggled with. Your videos have really really helped me to become much more flexible but also understand my muscles and what stretches are right for me! You’ve also helped me understand and be okay with the fact that I doubt I’ll ever be really flexible and be able to do s crazy oversplit. Thank you so much Auti, you’ve been a huge help and made me a lot calmer for my audition! ❤️

Great videos. I love how honest and straight forward you are. I have shared this video with my students. I hope what you say resonates with them. Because I have been saying the same thing over and over and over.

Thank you so much for addressing the running leads to inflexibility belief. I ran for years without stretching enough afterwards. And now I've been trying to get the flexibility back while still running. It's hasn't been at all easy and I keep googling to make sure running isn't making it impossible for me to be flexible. I'm going to figure out a ratio that works for my goals :)

Really depends on each ones body I think. I'm doing yoga 3-4 times a week and got my splits very quickly. Same thing for my backbends, and I have no dancing background or anything like that

Hi Auti! I am 34 and a mother of 4 children, one of them almost a teenager! 😱 After having kids I've struggled with all the usual issues, but am seeing a lot of good changes recently with consistent work. I loved this video, it was so helpful! I am now rolling my hamstrings along with the other things you suggested. I need help with something though. My issue at this point is that my right hamstring AND my right hip flexors are tight, causing trouble when I attempt left AND right splits! In my right split my hamstring doesn't want to give, in me left, my R hip flexors won't 😣 it's so frustrating! Is there anything else I could be doing or am doing wrong cause I feel like I can't get anywhere. Thanks!

I hope this helps but when i first got my split it still hurts a little bit to stay long even though i am flat at it. So what i did to get my splits faster is to attempt really high back and front kicks like 10 times or so like the kick for leg hold or needle

Hey Auti! So i’ve been stretching every single day this month for 2 hours straight, do you think this is good ? And will fasten the process of getting flexible? I’m thinking of holding this as long as i can this year. I’ve never really stretched before and i just started this month! Hope you’ll reply :)
@gabs1204 жыл бұрын
@Lara Star . I am a professional gymnast and dancer and trust me, you do NOT want to stretch for 2hours straight! I recommend doing a stretch for 30mins do a bit of dancing to stretchen them out a bit more than do another 30mins. I do this twice every day and it really helps :) You can do this before & after school too!

i have been stretching for about a month now and i thought i got my left splits but turns out that my hips weren’t square that’s why i feel a lot of pain even though i’m at the ground. i’ve watched several videos of how to square your hips but i still don’t get it. i’m near to giving up but hopefully i’ll find a solution to it.

Hi! You said here in video that they just come out of stretch when it hurts... Isn’t it right to do so? I overstretched my muscles some day when I didn’t come out of stretch when it did hurt...
@han-zi7bz3 жыл бұрын
not when it hurts, but when it feels uncomfortable. stretching should feel uncomfortable, she’s talking about people who come out of the stretch when they actually feel a stretch. if you are feeling a sharp pain, it is important to come out of it! you really have to pay attention and you eventually get an idea of the different feelings you should and should not be feeling when you stretch.

What if we’re not in a dance class where we have the dynamic stretching? Can you please do a video on dynamic stretching for non-dancers? I do take Latin dance classes but they don’t really expand flexibility based on the nature of the moves so this would be very helpful!

@CAITLINCILLIER4 жыл бұрын
Archi Makwana it will be like that in the beginning sometimes is best to give it a break if it’s really sore and try again later. Roll out those muscles take a warm bath. It will get better and won’t be as sore. Trust me I’ve been there.
