goseechristybe...
If you have had skin cancer or a family history of skin cancer, then it is likely you are wearing sunscreen...and more likely it is a HIGH SPF sunscreen.
When we refer to a high spf sunscreen, in this video, we are referring to a sunscreen that is higher than SPF of 50.
A High SPF sunscreen may not really be high in the Sun Protection Factor. Proctor and Gamble tested a competitors SPF 100 sunscreen in 3 different labs.
The results varied between spf 37 - spf 75.
The small differences in application and light transmissions yielded such dramatic differences in results, they concluded that in the "real world" the differences would also be the most dramatic in differences in SPF protection.
High SPF provides just a tad bit better sun protection when properly applied:
For example, SPF 50 blocks 98 % of UVB rays and whereas SPF 100 blocks out 99% of UVB rays.
The higher the SPF, the more sunscreen chemicals it can contain.
High SPF sunscreens are not completely protecting you.
Most of the high SPF sunscreen are designed to block out UVB (burning rays) which is the main cause of sunburn and non-melanoma skin cancers.
UV A rays (aging rays) are related to higher risk of developing melanoma . These rays penetrate deeper into the skin and more difficult to block with sunscreen ingredients approved by the FDA.
High SPF sunscreen fare worse in balancing out UV A and UV B protection. High SPF sunscreens are better at protecting from sunburn which is the UV B protection NOT the UV A rays.
The ideal sunscreen would be an equal balance of protection from BOTH types of UV rays.
In the U.S., the FDA is still testing out ingredients for UV A protection.
For more information in regards to the FDA guidelines and testing on sunscreens, please watch:

Excellent info, thank you! I only use mineral sunscreen 15 or 30 on my face daily, not the rest of my body. I use at least a 30 on my body if I'm going to be in the Sun a while. It definitely helps prevent a burn.

Great job! Thank you for sharing with us what you use. I also use a mineral based sunsceen spf 30. I will use a higher spf sunscreen when I know I will be out all day and I will use a combination (physical and chemical) on my body when I will be outside all day. But on a day to day basis when I am inside my treatment room, I only use a mineral sunscreen. I don't want any additional chemicals on my skin that I don't need.

well, for the SPF 50 vs. 100 argument, if you look at it from the amount of rays that reaches your skin, ie. SPF50 = 2% rays reach your skin vs. SPF100 = 1% rays reach skin, then the labeling is not misleading, since 100 is larger than 50 by a factor of 2, you get double the amount of protection against the rays that actually reach your skin.

Most people won't think like you do, though. Most people will be fine with SPF 30-50 unless they have a history of repeated skin cancer or family members who have skin cancer.

I wear an spf 50+ every single day. Here in Europe, manufacturers aren't allowed to label products over spf 50, so anything higher is labelled "spf 50+", which means at least 59.9. I prefer a higher protection even if I use the product correctly and use additional measures, like a hat and long sleeves/trousers. I also look for products with high PPD ratings (over 30), and if I will be in the sun for longer, I will only use a water resistant product with a PPD of at least 35-40. Since I am in Europe, I prefer chemical sunscreens, because the filters here are very stable and have great protection. Zinc oxide breaks me out, so I avoid mineral sunscreens.

I have started using Japanese sunscreens, because of the chemicals that provide great UVA (as well as UVB) rays and are more stable. What are your thoughts on these sunscreens, in general? I realize you were speaking of physical sunscreens, but I don't have sensitive skin and the chemical ones are so much lighter and don't have that white cast.

Thanks for the video! I use a Japanese sunscreen (Biorè Watery Gel) which is 50+ with UVA/UVB filters, it uses titanium dioxide as it leaves a light white cast but the ingredient list is very long. Does it really filter UVA rays? Japanese products are very specific about this and have their own measurements (SPF for UVB and PA for UVA). That's why I don't buy western sunscreen as they mostly don't feature any UVA filters.

HI Althea, as a general rule, go from thinnest to thickest in product. If the serum is water based, use the serum first. If it is anti oxidant serum, let absorb before spraying the toner and then apply the sunscreen/moisturizer, and then use the acne cream on the affected areas. I would use an oil free SPF 30-50 since your head is always exposed to the uv rays. In my other video, men had a higher rate of skin cancer on their scalp than women. The scalp produces 2x the oil than any other area of the body so I would use one that actually have patented microsponges that absorb excess oil. Most sunscreens for the scalp are too greasy. Hi liz863, I am avoiding doing any drugstore reviews for sunscreen since the FDA has given most drug store brands until 2023 to reformulate their products and to pass testing. Most of them were found to not actually pass their testing according to the spf label. Some of them were found to be quite a bit lower in sun protection.

very informational. I thought I heard before that anything above 50 does not really give you that much added benefit at all. To me it's really just a nuisance because it is so thick. I use between 30 and 45 SPF. I find that the zinc oxide produces less of a cast than the titanium dioxide but would rather use combination sunscreen for now anyway. Trip coming up soon, lots of time in the Sun.

Hi @Cath Gan, thank you for watching, for some people, they need a higher spf due to prior skin cancer or skin cancer that runs in their family. Unfortunately, the higher the spf, the more likely the higher the chemical levels to keep the spf stable and less resistance to break down, because no matter how high the spf, it is still recommended to reapply every hour or so.

Whats the best sun screen that has high spf AND broad spectrum coverage?
@GoSeeChristy
@GoSeeChristy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Grand Master Mawile, thank you for watching my video. There are many great sunscreens and there is NOT one that is the best. This depends on many factors depending on skin type, what skin condition you are trying to address and where you live. For example, mineral sunscreens are healthier for skin overall because it does not absorb into the skin. Mineral sunscreen also are better for people who are sensitive to chemical sunscreens because the uv absorbing chemicals tend to irritate sensitive skin types. High SPF such as 70 or higher tend to be chemical sunscreens. These would be suited for someone who works outdoors or will be sweating a lot so they need a sunscreen that absorbs into the skin vs one that can potentially be rubbed off such as a physical sunscreen. Most high spf sunscreens are broad spectrum nowadays. Do you have oily skin or dry skin, do you have break outs, do you have hyperpigmentation? There are sunscreens that address this as well. Please be more specific and then I can give you a more narrow selection.

If you mean by taking nutrition collagen, this will help preserve your collagen. I would avoid the Retinol if you are always driving and Florida is always sunny. I would agree with the sunscreen too. You would need to reapply every 90 minutes if you are always out driving. It would also help with lots of prevention such eating foods that help neutralize the free radicals on the cellular level.
