@TheCatholicHorrorGal I don't know if it's a reference or trope but I always understood Garcia was very unburdened from the world at large. Focused and dedicated to his work piously. The kind of guy you know has the cross carved into every bullet/pellet/etc. I think his threatening to Michael with the wrath of God is him trying to speak TO Michael, even though he is possessed, in frustration.

I discovered this channel by accident, and I'm delighted. This is incredibly interesting, and you speak clearly enough that I don't need captions to understand you. Exceptional information. Knowing that "Lucifer" is from Latin for "Light bearer" makes me want to see what other religious imagery I've missed in We Happy Few.

Such a great game, the creator Airdorf did an interview with Wendigoon that's pretty good where he talks about some of the inspiration and his own religious experience

I am not fluent in any faith, but I am very interested in hearing your musings as a Catholic scholar on how the demons/monsters are depicted in the game! Some of it is really abstract, like the constant use of tree branches and arms. So I'm looking forward to more as a new subscriber!
@TheCatholicHorrorGal13 күн бұрын
Thanks! Demons aren't described in the Bible, but angels are, and in rather surprising ways -- for example, having four faces and six wings, being covered entirely with eyes, etc. As demons are considered to be fallen angels in the Christian tradition, we might expect them to look similar yet a corrupted version.

Someone mentioned the dev Airdorf’s interview with Wendigoon already, but I want to bring up as well that Airdorf addressed John’s relationship with Molly. Basically, since his pastorship was revoked, he got very escapist from his life. At some point that period, he married Molly. Molly left the relationship off-stage though because she couldn’t bare the stress from John’s struggles throughout FAITH’s story. It’s very cool to see a Catholic commentary of the game since Airdorf is a Protestant Christian, so what he could comment about the game comes primarily from his experience as one.
@TheCatholicHorrorGal12 күн бұрын
Thanks for that backstory. It still leaves a ton of questions though because these are a number of ways that a priest can be suspended from the ministry, and if John was completely stripped of his priestly faculties he wouldn't be able to do an exorcism.

4:40 i just understood it as Garcia speaking to the demon itself, not the child. At this stage of possession, by a demon this powerful, it's hard to say that it's Michael speaking and in control, or that he is even present in the body anymore.
@TheCatholicHorrorGal2 күн бұрын
Yeah good point.

While a lot of the exorcism processes arent accurate in the game, I really like how it does a good job of showing/describing how people invite demons into their life whether they know it or not. Keep up the great work!

Love these series, thanks! By the way I didn't fully understand what you said about "suffer the children", I couldn't get the word you mentioned. It just means "let them come to me"? English isn't my mother language and I struggle with some words sometimes. Thanks again! I hope I can watch "Heretic" soon so I can see your analysis. Cheers!
@TheCatholicHorrorGal14 күн бұрын
You got it, in "older modern" English (like Shakespeare, for example), which is what the King James Bible translation was written in, "suffer" means "allow". Actually, Aragon says it to the chief of the dead army in Return of the King -- "You will suffer me" (to pass). So when Jesus says "suffer the children come to me" it means "let the children come to me".

I love the little detail from the confessional that the entity on the other side doesn't capitalize "He" when referring to God. If it wasn't already obvious that John was talking to a demon or cultist, that's a solid giveaway.
@TheCatholicHorrorGal12 күн бұрын
That's a great observation. Do the other characters capitalize it? I hadn't noticed. I think they do?... Another giveaway is the red font 😎
@chunkysenpai793012 күн бұрын
Yeah, the red font and the spooky voice also make it pretty clear, but I felt the capitalization was a nice touch to hammer it in even more. As far as I remember from playing the game when it came out, all references to God are capitalized by the good characters, only the villains use lower case. It's kinda funny when you think about it though. How does one speak in lower case? 😂 Great video as always, can't wait for part 3!

Excellent video, and I wanted to add that, during the Pandemonium Regnat newspaper, the line "Thou shalt not raise up what thou canst not put down again" is in the Simon Necronomicon, allegedly written by Peter Lavenda, but I'm not sure if it was originally Biblical. But with the other Lovecraft references, especially in Chapter 1, I wonder if the developer of this game had originally intended the story to be more Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror (Just look at the design of The Unspeakable) instead of more traditional Religious Horror. It's a stretch, but I just thought I'd mention it. But yeah, can't wait for Chapter 3!

Before watching the video I'm just gonna say my interpretation of Chapter 2 is that as horrifying of a nightmare as it is I believe it was a vision from God to help John defeat the cult

The word or the sacrament?
@CarlTheSpud14 күн бұрын
@TheCatholicHorrorGal the word. Reconciliation. I dropped off the Roman Catholic bandwagon at the sacrament of confirmation as my young brain understood it was "conforming" to baptism but I wasn't crazy about the idea of Conforming to an organized religion. This led to me confessing these things to my priest, not in a confessiary but in an empty church, he had set aside time to discuss this with me. Long story short I walked away understanding everything was about MY connection to God. While also asking questions he felt were more appropriate for a bishop. Spiritually that conversation was a complete doorkick. I was open to so many ideas. Sorry that turned into a bit of a tangent unrelated to penance/reconciliation. Some event decades ago ;p

As far as my experience with Protestants in America, everything in the Bible is literal without any examination of how it would have been interpreted when it was written. Unfortunately. (Not speaking for every Protestant, just my experience with evangelists and Pentecostals.
@CarlTheSpud14 күн бұрын
Lutheranism would be a good "Protestant" lense to try?
@kaiserdamasus197814 күн бұрын
@@CarlTheSpud Well, pretty much all of Protestantism comes with its own baggage... Protestantism is a much later... spin-off of Christianity, to put it gently.
@CarlTheSpud14 күн бұрын
@kaiserdamasus1978 Martin is like... the OG protestant though. To be clear this is IN protest to the Catholic Church. Quite literally. So the "baggage" is relevant. Early Christianity, in many ways, predates Catholicism. I hear Lutherans referred to as "Catholic Lites" but there is more to it than that. I have learned with them and worshipped.
@raphaelledesma939314 күн бұрын
If you go Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Episcopalians, they read Scripture similarly. Many of them still utilize a similar leadership structure having bishops, priests/pastors, etc so they read Scripture in a more nuanced manner using philosophy and history and writings of the Church Fathers. Evangelicals and Pentecostals are even newer movements so it makes sense that they are in a way more radically different especially in terms of theology, Scriptures, etc. For instance, the Rapture is an idea that sprung from them since most Christians before the 19th century didn't believe in it. I think even present day Lutherans, etc don't mostly.
@CarlTheSpud14 күн бұрын
@raphaelledesma9393 Lutherans are Calvinist with more liturgy and sacraments. I guess I don't understand the predestination aspect of lutheranism.

@TheCatholicHorrorGal I mainly want to hear your take on the villains... It really doesn't make much sense but is hamfisted theo-political leftist junk. They ruined it like that.
