The Fox Dub will always fiercely be my preference. I have the whole dialogue memorized from the beginning with the truck driving all the way to the end where the theme song starts and transition to the credits. In my opinion, it should've never been redubbed. I could even watch the Japanese version without the need for subtitles.

I’m afraid I have to disagree, personally. Satsuki in particular sounds like a grown woman desperately trying to pass as a child in the Fox dub. Kids are squeaky. I prefer the authenticity of the Disney to… Whatever it is Fox had going on.
@Zeldafan1ify
@Zeldafan1ify 2 жыл бұрын
@@ticktockvaudevillian2211 I beg to differ. Sure, Satsuki sounds a bit older in the fox version (not a grown woman at all.. more teenage), but her worrying and near-crying is also a lot more realistic and genuine when Mei went missing. Even the Nanny sounds so much more frantic and shaky when she's holding the sandal in the fox dub, while in the disney dub she sounds unnaturally calm. Same with Satsuki. Another example: in the scene where the Kanta's mom scolds him for losing the umbrella, disney dub mom sounds incredibly passive and calm while her character is punching kanta's head. In fox dub, her tone is more aggressive and believable. Mei also sounds more like a 4 year old in fox dub whereas in the disney dub she sounds older, and her VA always had a more mature voice for her age (even though Elle still did a great job and I don't fault her for having a deeper voice). She nails some parts but it always sounds off because of the maturity in her voice. On the contrary, while disney dub still does a great job and the girls did exceptional especially in their squeaky/laughing scenes, Fox dub still holds more authenticity than the disney version and the voice acting is more natural overall. Also, the singing in the og dub is way better than the latter, imho. I can get past Satsuki sounding like a teenager in the fox dub because everything else about her and the whole cast fits perfectly into the film. Plus it suits her anyway since she is more "mature" for her age. Mei literally has the age-appropriate lisping of little kids in the fox dub. No question, I prefer the fox dub 100%.

Finding the “fox dub” version on dvd has been a white whale of mine. I just recently found one on eBay, and got it for 40 dollars in a lot of 25 kids movies. The packaging was almost perfect and the inside pages where still there. I watched it the moment it arrived. I prefer it to Disney because I feel the voices and story flows much smoother than in the Disney version which feels read and forced. I grew up watching the Fox dub and while I know that the strength of how it makes me feel compared to the new one has a lot to do with nostalgia and being a large part of shaping my media preferences ever since, there are a few parts at least that I feel are objectively better in the Fox dub. The biggest to me is when Mei looks in the puddle and excitedly says "Gollywollypogs!" when she sees the tadpoles. There is just something whimsical and authentic about a very young child half remembering the name of an animal and making up a whole new word. Also... Soot Gremlins? lmao

Fox dub was the best and one of THE best anime dubs in general I think. I had a hard time accepting the new dub and hate that it's the dub a lot of people see. The fanning sisters don't have any emotion. I also loved that they dubbed "itterashai" when satsuki running out the door to walk with michiko as a little sarcastic "well thanks for saying goodbye!". The Fox dub is Fox Searchlight Pictures’ first release, later known for films like Juno, (500) Days of Summer, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and The Shape of Water. This dub (as well as the other JAL dubs for Ghibli) were also made for Hong Kong theatrical releases, which explains their low production values and quality, since Hong Kong cinema never prioritised audio quality until the mid-2000s. Even with the low production values and quality, the Streamline dubs of Totoro and Kiki are really great. But Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso had awful pre-Disney JAL Hong Kong dubs. Even with the kids sounding older in the Disney version of Castle in the Sky, it is miles ahead of the older Hong Kong dub.

I don't think it's fair to say that the Disney dub is the most popular dub. From what I've read, it's pretty contentious, but a lot more people seem to prefer the Fox dub. I listened to a comparison of the two in the scene when Mei starts crying on KZbin a few minutes ago, and honestly... I don't really like the Disney dub. :/ I say this as someone who actually really liked Dakota fanning as a kid. i had a HUGE crush on her since we're about the same age. But the fact that Dakota and Elle were REAL sisters, and actual kids just doesn't cut it for me. Yeah, that's great casting, but they just don't sound as good. Perhaps it's because when I saw the movie for the first time this year I saw the Fox dub, but that's just what I think sounds better.

Popular may have been the wrong word. Among fans of the film there's a definite split but due to lack of accessibility, the fox dub is sadly falling into obscurity with no plans to officially rerelease it. All Disney dubs were co-productions with Ghibli which means they are the "official" dubs of all films released under the partnership. Now that Gkids has distribution rights it's slightly more likely but I doubt Ghibli would allow it.

I'm not sure I would call the Disney dub the more popular of the English dubs. Unlike other Ghibli dubs of the time (Warriors of the Wind, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky), Streamline's Totoro dub had far greater exposure getting a VHS release by Fox for their Family Feature line of movies in 1994, as opposed to Disney's 2006 dub. So I think that as a result, there's a bigger wealth of nostalgia for Streamline despite being out of print for 15 years
@radicalreptyl9190

I definitely see where you're coming from. For a generation of fans, the original English dub is definitely what they think back on but when it comes to accessibility, it's hard to deny that the Streamline dub is slowly falling into obscurity while the Disney dub keeps getting rereleases. This definitely sucks considering the home video distribution isn't even handled by Disney anymore but because all the dubs were also co-produced/owned by Ghibli. They have become "official" English dubs for the films.

I prefer Disney dub over Fox simply because Disney version was the one I saw first. Then I saw the Fox version and I did not like MC girls voiced by an adult. In Disney dub, the girls were voiced by Dakota and Elle Fanning who were kids themselves at the time of the re-dub around mid 2000s. It felt realistic as child characters were voiced by children. Also, I don't have the nostalgia problem as I discovered the beautiful world of Studio Ghibli pretty late in my life. Anyways, to each his own.

I prefer the Fox dub for one reason: The Fanning sisters were horribly, HORRIBLY miscast and when they're the main characters of the movie, that's a problem. It's not a nostalgia thing, either. The Streamline Pictures dub of Akira was one of the first anime I saw and cemented my love for anime so I'll always prefer that version, but I recognize that the later Pioneer dub is probably the better of the two. With Totoro, Disney fucked up, plain and simple. Which sucks because every other Ghibli dub they did was excellent. If they had to ruin something, why did it have to be Totoro?

i don't wanna be called out for this but I honestly don't understand why people prefer the Fox/Japanese Airline version when the voice actors in that version didn't sound like they were acting but more like reading the lines so they can get paid which is why it can never exist nowadays and that's why the Disney version on the other hand used actual voice performances especially from big names and I honestly would find it laughable if the Fox/Japanese Airline version was on both Blu-ray and Streaming since only the Disney dub gets them.
@vjpearce

Steamline also did the original English dub for Castle in the Sky, which to me is superior to the Disney redub for various reasons. The main thing being James Van Der Beek's over the top performance, over-aged voice he used for Pazu. Even Anna Paquin's voice of Sheeta was all over the place. Sheeta's accent was constantly changing from scene to scene to the point it was being a distraction. Everybody else in the cast did a great job though. The other nitpick I had with the Disney version is the sound effects. It's like they turned down the overall volume, so when something big like a tank fires a shell, it sounds more like a cap gun. And the last thing: Too many new musical scores were added and it lost the charm of the original soundtrack.

Oh my gosh! I thought I was the only person who noticed her accent constantly changing, bugged me so much the first time I saw that film!! If you've ever seen the movie Steamboy, she voices the main character Ray and does the same thing! lol And I agree about James Van Der Beek, I'm sure he's a good actor otherwise but I really didn't care for his performance as Pazu. I did NOT know there is a Streamline dub of Castle in the Sky, I need to find this!!

I don't wish to be "that guy", but Nausicaa isn't Miyazaki's "first film." It's his second directorial feature film, and seventh directorial work overall (Lupin III Series One, Yuki's Sun pilot, Future Boy Conan, Lupin III Series Two, Castle of Cagliostro, Sherlock Hound). Anyway, this is a great video that looks and sounds great. I really enjoyed watching and would recommend showing this to Totoro fans who might be curious about the now-legendary Streamline dub.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I did put up the subtext when I said it but even then it's not completely accurate because Nausicaa although now considered to be Ghibli's "first film" actually predates the official creation of the studio.

Sure, people holding nostalgia over the FOX dub can hinder their opinion, but it's equally wrong to white knight the Disney dub as well. I'd say that the FOX version has more moments of cringe, well the Disney version has more moments of poor acting. It should simply be common sense to pick an experienced actor over a seasoned voice, because even if they sound the role, they won't necessarily do it justice. Stephanie Nadolny taught us that well. And for cartoons, you generally want them to sound a little cartoony. Unless Totoro was aiming for realism in its design, and it clearly wasn't, I don't see the need to hire actual children for the girls. As for the other voices, I think they're alright in the acting department, but do not really fit the characters as well as the originals did. I even believe the FOX dub fit them better than the Japnese in some cases, though the Disney dub would surprise me every now and then with a solid voice actor. And for the more minor characters, you could go either way. I just want to make a point here that some of them can have moments where _they are_ objectively better, but comparing the two as a whole with each other is where you would call it subjective. None of them are perfect, but I don't want people using nostalgia or white knighting to win the argument. If there is a point where the tone, acting or both are visibly bad, say so and don't try to shroud it with an excuse. That's all you could really ask for in an argument. And yes, for the third, more obscure fan base that favors the Japanese original, even yours has the occasional flaw. Though, I can't deny the animation syncs up the best with the original voice acting.

I don't know anyone who has watched the fox dub, prefer the Disney dub instead. Even including my daughter who watched the Disney dub for years before I got her the fox dub... Don't understand why Disney didn't just pay for the fox dub instead of redoing it (probably because someone wanted to make money through a new dub). Anyways there is no value added from the Disney dub and it takes away the charm bought to the film by the amazing fox dub.

I will admit that the first time I saw TOTORO it WAS with the FOX dub. However, as much as I liked it then, I feel that the arguments that the Disney dub is an abomination that shouldn't exist is all wrong. It is in no way a travesty. It still tells the same story, it keeps the character's names intact (Satsuki's name is pronounced correctly), and it doesn't make any major alterations to the story. The only thing that I think the FOX dub does better is the OP/ED songs, but otherwise as far as I'm concerned, both dubs of TOTORO have their charms. I don't mean anything against Cheryl Chase or Lisa Michelson -- they both did good for the time, but honestly, for Mei, I actually think I prefer Elle Fanning's take. I tend to prefer kid characters to sound like actual kids, and for that level of authenticity, Elle just edges out Cheryl, who, while good, was sometimes a bit too strained in places (nitpick alert). Plus Elle gets the juicier role. Dakota is a bit more low-key than Lisa, but I thought her acting was still good. Everybody else in the Disney dub is excellent, and roughly on par with their FOX counterparts. Disney's dub is also a bit more accurate -- FOX's dub was a bit guilty of adding in some extra lines and omitted some details. Disney's version actually dials back a lot of added in lines and brings back some details. As far as the "soot gremlins" thing, that's their call, but honestly, it doesn't matter if it's "dust bunnies" or "soot gremlins". The ideas the same. So in short, is Disney's dub a travesty? Not at all. I find both dubs to be very agreeable and delightful in their own right. The FOX dub was good for its time, but Disney's doesn't deserve even one inch of the backlash. It is in no way awful. Now if you want a bad dub, then yes, WARRIORS OF THE WIND DOES qualify, as does the JAL/80's dub of LAPUTA, and the JAL dub of PORCO ROSSO. All three thankfully got better dubs from Disney.

I like both versions, honestly. The FOX/Streamline was good for its time, but the Disney dub is by no means bad. It''s just a different take. Not any better or worse. Both are equally on par IMO. @Turnajon
@Turnajon 6 жыл бұрын
Streamline's dub of KIKI is pretty good overall. I do think the Disney one just edges it out in terms of performances and writing, but Streamline's isn't too bad. Lisa Michelson was pretty good as Kiki, roughly on par with Kirsten Dunst, although not by much, but I thought Kerrigan Mahan wasn't as funny as Phil Hartman's Jiji, and Eddie Frierson was miscast as Tombo. I thought Matthew Lawrence did a better job. Everyone else I thought was on par as well, not better or worse than Disney's. One thing that the Streamline dub does right is that it doesn't take as many liberties with the translation, but the overall message of the story is the same, and Disney basically neutered some of the additions to their dub with the 2010 DVD recut (including, unfortunately, a lot of priceless lines from Hartman like "Smooth. VERY smooth, you definitely know how to make a good first impression." and cutting this line in half: "They're calling you an egg stealer, and you don't wanna know what else!")... but at the cost of good sound quality, because everyone sounds like they're talking through a fan. It's funny, but I prefer the 2003 DVD mix of KIKI because of this. More "true" to the Japanese or not, if the 2010 DVD dub mix sounds raspy, there's no way I can support that version.
