Nobody seems to talk about the psychological impact of collecting books and building a library. It’s strange to me that video game collecting is seen as such a taboo compared to that.

If you google book collecting additiction you will see a lot of posts pretaining to book collectors. This opinion exists outside of this hobby and some people look down on having a huge collection of books seeing them as a waste of money. Get out of the echo chamber of just video game collecting and you will see the same discussions had about those hobbies as well.

Moving games, books, vinyls , anything that requires shelf space and putting them into boxes will really make you think about why you want and need them. The burden of just having a lot of stuff can really cause a bit of stress when it comes time to downsize.

Thanks for the shoutout buddy. Collecting is fun. Whether it be games, figures, cards, etc but let sometimes need to address the elephant in the room called addiction and at what point does it break beyond fun and more into being addicted to doing it. Really love seeing you talk about it and the discussions you are having in your recent videos talking about mens mental health. Fight the good fight.

Wow I’m 19 now and wouldn’t really consider having any collecting habits that are apparent right now. You made me realize that things like Pokemon cards and video games I would focus more on “having a set/collection” and less on the enjoyment that can come out of the hobbies. I would just open packs and get mad if I didn’t get a new card to add to a binder and it just feels like gambling or hoarding at some point.

Born with no physical possessions, die with no physical possessions. Can't take it with you, only the memories. Gaming on the couch with real life friends will always beat collecting games by yourself.

Collecting for it's own sake is pretty absurd in my opinion. Collecting gems you will actually play is okay, but honestly there is not enough time in life to play all the shit that exists.

Then just emulate and pirate it? That’s a solution you know, by time you’ve lined some resellers wallet, you could have purchased a Steam Deck or decent PC that plays every console generation.

Collecting expensive things should be personal and is a personal art. Tons of ways to collect and what to collect. You can even have a single collection and feel okay with it and can have all and never happy with it. Collect what you love. At times letting go collections are hard but if you think as a collector, your collection can make others happier. As long as you are not selling to a scalper and selling to a person who would love it then that’s a win on both side. I will regret selling to someone and later found it being sold for gains. But that is my collector side of me and my personal take on this game collection mania.

I buy physical games I like to play. I do have a collection, but all of them I actually like. I don't but games that I don't like and don't want to play. I don't see a problem if someone has the money and wants to buy games for a collection they don't play. Not my money, not my choice, not my business, not my say. The only time I can say it would be unhealthy, is if it is a real addiction. But, anything can be an addiction if you get really badly obsessed with something, pick your poison. Seriously though, video game collecting can be healthy too, but it really depends on your own feelings, it isn't the video game collecting specifically that would cause the unhealthy addiction, it is how you view it, and so due to it being about your view and feeling of something, it isn't a specific thing, it goes for everything. There are traps you could fall into, however, nothing is actually "safe" in this world, so I don't see collecting as any different to other things, video game collecting, blu-ray collecting, vinyl collecting, figure collecting, doll collecting, collecting a specific brand, book collecting, whatever, it doesn't matter, collecting healthy or unhealthy is always based on your own self, so collecting isn't inherently bad or wrong in and of itself. It is your relationship to it that determines what it is for you. One thing though, is that, whole libraries of books that people collect, are not seen as wrong and bad and an addiction a lot of the time, as a lot of the time, it is seen as positive, but games are bad and an addiction if you have loads of them?? Hypocrisy. Collecting is collecting, regardless of what it is, just because books collections are seen as good, it is OK to have loads of them? But that also implies that it isn't "wrong" to have a huge collection of games either, as both are collections of harmless things regardless. It only gets harmful if you are addicted to it, which doesn't happen always. Anyway, enough of my rambling..

I don't collect Wii games and stopped collecting PS2 and PS3 games all because I hacked those systems. I have a hard drive with over 400 Wii games on it. The PS2 games are on my computer which I stream to my PS2 (yes it can be done) and my PS3 games are downloaded to my PS3. Everyone collects something. Women collect make up and houseplants and shoes, guys collect better things.
