No problem using WD-40 as long as you know you're using it as a solvent/cleaner and not as a lubricant. As long as you wipe it off after cleaning and apply a proper lube and grease as you mentioned !The problem comes when people think it's a lube !

Good call and exactly correct........I am a retired elevator mech.......My company decided to save money once and buy WD-40 for lubrication on rails and slides......I told them it was a solvent.....buy they didn't listen......it dried rails and created rust build up points......just awful stuff for rollers and slides........took them 6 mo to hear from the guys and go back to a real lube......but as a cleaner I like it
@calvinh.88827 жыл бұрын
Exactly.. its main use is as a solvent and/or a rust dissolver.. If i'm in a hurry and need something done for a quick fix, i will spray it with WD40, and then shake it out and spray some lithium grease in it.. WD-40 will lubricate something for a few minutes, but it doesn't last long at all..
@replaceablehead4 жыл бұрын
It's matter of public fact that wd40 does contain lubricant. It's a two part concoction that degreases and then relubricates. It's like shampoo and conditioner. It may sound like an oxymoron, but this is what manufacturer claims the product does.

I have an UL reel with an annoying squeak where the knob is attached to the handle. Hit it with some WD-40 and the squeak went away. WD-40 is Water Displacement 40th Formula. I've used it on all my reels since I started fishing. It lubricates and prevents corrosion. I have Penn reels from the 1970s-1980s that have no rust, pitting or corrosion because I soak them in WD-40 every few months. Along with proper cleaning and maintenance; these reels work as good today as they did when my father bought them 30 years ago.

WD40 has a solvent, making it good to remove old grease. Once you put in good fresh grease just add some oil every once in a while to keep the grease soft. It’s also good to save a reel you dunk, where you can flood it with WD40 temporarily until you need to clean it I’d say you don’t have cleaning stuff cuz you went somewhere far.

As a reel-nerd, let me tell you, you can use WD if you go way too long with too heavy of a grease, and it will reconstitute the grease back to a lube. You can "get away" with this on those old Penn reels. They were simple and strong. Let me give you a better tip, Yak; use 3-in-1 oil (same company) instead. It actually has anti-frictional properties that WD simply does not. It also does not evaporate in a month like WD. You could also use a heavy motor oil like a 20W-50 for motorcycles. It's great stuff for anything in your real, gears included. It can get sticky/tacky after some time, however, but just add WD or some 3in1 oil. That's the cave man way of lubricating your reels and it will work! But don't expect a Shimano baitcaster to put up with this crude approach to lubrication and be working at full charm.

For the past 10 years I fish a month in Fl salt water using freshwater equipment. I don't think I ever paid more than $35 for a reel. Caught a lot of 3 ft and smaller red fish, shark etc. and a few 40 pound sting rays using 20# super line. I rinse the equipment off and flush with WD-40 after every trip, which could be 3 times a day, and am still using the same equipment. One year, I used a guide 10 times in a month and he had good salt water equipment. I did not notice any difference in performance using similar equipment. I can afford to buy better equipment, but decided on the first trip to replace the fresh water equipment when it failed. It never has.

I don't want to lose a big fish because of something I could have prevented, but I clean my rods and reels twice every year and replace the line. I have discussed this issue with the tech support agent at WD 40 company . They told me that its ok to leave WD 40 on any metal parts but, to leave it on any internal plastic parts would be a huge mistake . I agree with this advice . That being said just keep WD 40 away from any plastic internal or external fishing reel parts and its good to go time . WD 40 will seriously break down plastic rendering it weak and subject to breaking alot more easily over time . WD 40 and plastic are a DO NOT DO !!! . CRC 2-26 multipurpose lubricant is safe for plastics . I intend to use it for my fishing reels . Otherwise for metal parts WD- 40 should be just fine . I hear that Reel Kleen is very safe for all fishing reel parts but they dont say which materials . : * )

Everyone saying that wd40 is a solvent and not a lubricant, can I ask a question? Why is it that wd40 when it gets on your fingers feels greasy, where as a true solvent like acetone, isopropanol, methanol will not feel greasy. In fact they evaporate so quick and leave your fingers really dry. So in my opinion wd40 may not be a long lasting lubricant like grease or oil, but it helps to penetrate sticky parts allowing them to move freely.

Never in a million years would I use WD-40 The WD stands for water displacement. Ask a gun owner what happens if you let it sit too long. Is can also act as a degreaser and will age your plastic and rubber parts in the reel. Use it to clean the reel when taken apart if you really need to, wipe away and then use a proper oil.

Whatever it may do to reels, WD40 destroys line. It extracts the plasticizers that are formulated the with polymer to keep it supple. As a result the line gets stiff and loses its tensile strength. Going back to reels, it also extracts the plasticizers from any seals, gaskets, or polymer washes. Great for metal, but there will be a price to pay if you put it on anything plastic, and the bill will probably come due at a time you won't like.
