I was a dental assistant for six years . I was burnt out . Overworked and underpaid. So, 2017 I went back to school to do my prerequisite. Got accepted into Dental Hygiene Summer 2020. Now I’m 2 semesters away from graduating as a Dental Hygienist. I’m excited to take the boards and start this new journey!

I think the reason why dentistry is so hard emotionally is because people take them selves very seriously. And it’s very competitive also I feel like you get judged for not being a certain personality type. of course be positive and happy but sometimes it can be over done and also I feel ppls personality is always under a microscope as a dental assistant. There’s a lot of judgment in the field.

There are people out there who are very rigid, but we find most “dental people” to actually a great sense of humor. It’s all about keeping it balanced, you know? When we work, we work, and when it’s play time, we play.

It's even worse as an oral surgery assistant. I LOVEEEE the work, and most of the patients, but oral surgeons are really intense! They can just lash out on you...and then after surgery pretend nothing happened. I'm over it. I'm in the process of finding my dream office again. I moved to VA from NC to marry the love of my life, but I left behind the perfect office for me 😭. It's so hard bc this is a small town and there's not many OS offices hiring. Plus, I'm tired of being in an office that's in network with Medicaid. Too. Much. Drama! 😡

Oh my goodness I am so glad I found your channel! First I have to say I have watched several of your videos and read your replies to comments and you guys seem so sweet and have such great attitudes. So I need to vent to you a little, I am currently an orthodontic assistant and I really dislike it. I dread going to work everyday. I didn't go to school to be a DA but previously I worked at an office where I was trained on the job but I needed to take my DANB radiology exam in order to take xrays so I taught myself everything by reading books and testing myself and I was so happy when I passed the exam last year! I LOVED working as a DA in my previous office but the commute was to far for what I was getting paid and I got another offer closer to home that was to good to pass up. I worked at my new office as a DA for about a month before everything closed down due to COVID. My new office with my new job eventually decided to permanently close due to COVID over the summer. I was devastated and began to look for work. It took me awhile but I landed my new job at an ortho office this past fall. When I interviewed I told them I didn't have schooling, and my previous offices didn't do orthodontics but am willing to learn. They said that was fine and I got the job. I was so excited but boy oh boy I wish I would have looked into it more but I was desperate for a job in the dental field and had a hard time finding anything. It's not terrible but the workload is enormous. There are two other assistants besides me; one who has been there 10 years and has a broader range and will take xrays, impressions, and work in the mouth and one of the assistants who has been there 30 years but refuses to take xrays, take impressions, trim models, and work in the mouth putting on ties and power chains etc. I am required to learn and do every aspect. When I started I was obviously very slow when I was removing old ties and putting on new ties and power chains and I actually got told by the assistant with broader ranger that I need to be faster while working in the mouth, 2 weeks after I started! I've gotten my speed up since I've started and actually really enjoy working in the mouth but it's like the other two assistants expect me to know and do everything now. The assistant who has a broader range works exclusively at the front desk now doing insurance and will only help with patients or in the lab if absolutely necessary, even if she is needed to help with patients she complains about it. 9 times out of 10 no models would get poured unless I do them, things would not be sterilized and bagged if I did not run them through and organize them, models don't get trimmed unless I do them, xrays and impressions don't get taken, and rooms don't get cleaned and stocked unless I do them, all of this on top of me having to see around 30 patients a day for treatment. Oh and I am usually the only one who is doing closing routines at the end of the day. I feel so frustrated because during the interview I was told over and over how much teamwork is important and vital to them but I just feel like there is a huge imbalance in workloads and what is expected of me especially me being so new and making little money. I got asked the other to day to set up a procedure that I have never set up for before and was unfamiliar with and got looked at like I had two heads and get snotty remarks when I told them I didn't know how; I am willing to learn but I never have time to learn or practice different skills because of all the other work that is required of me and wouldn't get done unless I do it. My dentist really needs to hire more help but I know this will not happen. Which is unfortunate because he is very nice boss and a good dentist, but it's almost like he and the assistants forget that people need time to learn and support so they can develop skills and speed. I get that there are patients that need seen and work that needs done but it's as if they want you be at their level immediately and forget that there is a learning curve to everything, especially when someone is totally new to job. I am in my late 20s but I am returning to school this month to get my prereqs so I can apply for hygiene school and am going to be reducing my hours at this office so the end is near. I am very excited and I think being a hygienist will be a better fit for me since I really enjoy working in the mouth at the ortho office and I LOVED taking full mouth series of xrays at my old office. I'm very excited for this new challenge and step in life! Thanks for reading ladies and thank you for the videos!!!

WOW you needed to vent! 😅😅 We are sending you a HUGE virtual hug!! 💞 Thank you so much for watching our videos, we are happy to know that you enjoy them😁😁 It sucks that you’ve had so many struggles as a DA and that your current office turned out to be so problematic. But, it seems like you have an “exit” strategy thought out so good for you! There is soo much to learn to become a great DA that we applaud everyone that is able to learn it all on their own 👏🏼👏🏼 You seem like an incredibly hard worker and no doubt you will do great in hygiene school so keep working on your goals and keep us posted on your progress!!💪🏼❤️

This really helped me a lot. I am about to start the DA program and have been doing some research on youtube and was starting to feel discouraged because it seemed everyone on here literally hated this field and quit. Way to put things in perspective!

Glad you enjoyed the video 😊😊 We believe any job can turn sour at any point; dentistry is not the only one. So it’s ok to move one from one office to another if things aren’t going well, it’s ok to realize that you may want to change careers or seek higher education within the field. Most of the time we put limitations that do not exist. If we’re growing, we’re changing… We love dentistry and we know the things that are wrong within the field, but we choose to stay because we want to make things better, but that doesn’t have to be everyone’s situation.

@@DentalVibes Assisting in general and knowing what things are when someone asks. For a while I’ve always said I’d try and give at least one more office a shot but after all the things I’ve experienced and how I’ve been treated I don’t ever want to be in that kind of environment again. Some things that cost me my job had to do with patient care.

@@DentalVibes At the same time though, dental did provide me with more financial security, and I have over one year of experience I could show for. So at the same time, it’s like I don’t want to waste that but at the same time I feel like I should try and give at least one more office a shot.

Im on my extern and i feel like i have no guidence. I dont know where to be and no one is showing me. I try to stay busy with sterile and cleaning rooms. I'll pop in a room and start watching a procedure but I want to learn what to do from open to close and everything in between. I feel like the assistants should know this but they are to busy to care😳

I think to say she was just lazy or unwilling is a bit presumptuous. I’m sure there is a lot more to that story. Not saying that people don’t make changes because they’re afraid but I think it’s a bit of leap.

Lesley Quiñones We are sure people have several reasons why they don’t step out of their comfort zone. But, being unhappy & not doing anything to change it is not the way to go.

Dental Vibes Of course, I’m only saying that “ Being Lazy “ isn’t exactly always the reason why people don’t make changes. I’m saying that it can be deeper than that; I never said it was “ The way to go” of course it isn’t. There’s a lot of things that people resort to doing that isn’t “the way to go” but it always because they’re lazy or unwilling to”

@DentalVibes well from one clinic they straight up said that they only hire women. The other one told me to go and shadow the dental assistant, which I did and then they told me come back tomorrow again and I said sounds good. Then I got a text from the clinic saying, doctor wants to hold back on bringing you back until we review the other applicants. Yep I told you they just throw guys under the bus.
