*Fun Fact:* Waterbending in the show Avatar: the Last Airbender is based on a style of T'ai chi ch'uan, specifically the Yang style. It is a Chinese martial art that features slow movements and elegant forms that evoke the feel of flowing water. This is an internal style that focuses on the control of energy. It is a very soft, gentle and flowing, but devastating when mastered. Water is perhaps the most underestimated form of Bending next to Air-people don't realize just how DANGEROUS it can be until you're up against a master. Water being being based on T'ai chi also makes sense for waterbending healers like Katara-T'ai chi is an art of both healing, gentleness, and patience, yet as one can see in the show it has EXPLOSIVE power just like water itself. It's the PERFECT base for waterbending.

@@laurenthomas2186 yep-each style of bending is based on a REAL martial art form. T'ai chi for Waterbending, bagua for Airbending, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu for Firebending, and finally Hung Gar Kuen, a style of Southern Kung Fu for Earthbending.

i reckon this is why airbenders are known as peaceful monks, waterbenders tend to focus on using their bending for building and hunting, earthbending is used for more defensive fighting, and firebending is often used for more offensive fighting. it goes with the character of the people. it has to, cause imagine if airbenders went to war.

Back when i was studying in China, i had a compulsory tai-chi class. So we had no idea what tai-chi is back then, but after trying it with an amazing tai-chi teacher I absolutely felt in love with it. And the place where we practiced it was gorgeous too. It was always by the lake where sakura trees blossomed. Just imagine practicing really calming and spiritual exercises in an absolutely picturesque place after some stressful organic chemistry classes.

The palm thing where you can feel your energy is pretty calming. You should try it but do it the right way, not how that guy did it. You're supposed to massage your hands then rest them palm up on your lap for like 20 seconds and relax. Then put your hands close together and move them closer and farther repeatedly in small movements. You'll find a spot where you feel a sensation like magnets pushing away from eachother. You should be able to do it first try (I've never met anybody who couldn't) and with practice you can learn to feel it with your hands much farther apart.
