I know a lot of people might think this song is really pretty and romantic, but the title and the fact that the joke in this song is made really apparent when you realize the 'rain' at the end is really supposed to be a cold shower. The Tubes made a carreer out of poking fun at everybody.

David Foster on fire in 1981! Wore this cassette out in 1983/84 driving to school. I had the biggest crush on this girl I drove to school everyday that I had known most of my life. Unfortunately, we turned out to be a classic high school "friends" situation. This song always reminds me of her. Oh well, not everything turned out to be Romeo and Juliet..... :)
@RickLaForce2 жыл бұрын
The Tubes were the heavyweight champs of satire. They were so masterful at it, you really had to be pay close attention to catch it all. This excellent song is no different. It's not a "love" song, it's an "I Want to Get in Your Pants" song, deftly presented as a love song. That Spooner could sing these lyrics with such apparent sincerity . . . and a straight face . . . . is testimony that he was a Tube through-and-through.
@thelastperfectman4139 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s very subtle and sung with such sincerity, combined with such classic ballad production, that you don’t catch on at first, but it’s definitely got a satirical edge hidden in there. Spooner’s material (and the Tubes overall) always contained satire. This number was so sophisticated musically that it’s easy to see how it might well be viewed as a pure love song. Albeit, let’s be honest, aren’t most rock love songs really just “trying to get some” songs?

What a group the tubes were way before my time since I'm 30 years old but when I heard them for the time I was intently hooked on them and there bridge between rock and pop and new wave and disco and early foray on to theatrical rock to show men ship to .

When I first bought this album in 1982 I believed Fee Waybill sang this song, once I saw the band live in June 1983, I realized it was Bill Spooner's tune. Phenomenal song, criminally overlooked by FM radio and later this video by MTV. A tune that was gifted a righteous (and lengthy) guitar solo by Roger Steen at sometime in the early 00s.

Outstanding video quality and great stereo sound track. Thanks my friend. This was my first "SIMULCAST" recording of a Music Video in the early eighties. TV showed the video and an FM radio station provided the stereo sound track. I thought I was in heaven back then. Of course this is all routine now. Unfortunately we now have the technology, but the talent is nowhere to be found.

@thelastperfectman4139 Жыл бұрын
Don’t know if they were ever really considered punk? They definitely were a band that defied classification; they had the antics and theatricality of glam but did not take it seriously-it was a joke-and their material was the height of satire. And punk and new wave was an obvious satirical target. In many ways they could be seen as progressive but they were too raw and theatrical to be considered as such. Really a one if a kind confection.

LYRICS: We, could be the last two on earth To start a new world Just you and me, girl Try, and you can almost see How it could be, just you and me Lost, trapped in the freezing cold Barely alive, have to make love to survive I'll show you how it's done We'll take it as it comes A rocket to the sun I don't want to wait anymore I just don't think I have the strength The strength to carry on Oh, I don't want to wait anymore I waited so long Forgot what I'm waiting for Stranded on a desert isle With no one around For thousand of miles Imagine any place This is what it takes But don't tell me to wait I don't want to wait anymore I just don't think I have the strength The strength to carry on Oh, I don't want to wait anymore I waited so long Forgot what I'm waiting for I don't want to wait anymore I just don't think I have the strength The strength to carry on Oh, I don't want to wait anymore I waited so long Forgot what I'm waiting for Forgot what I'm waiting for, whoa I don't want to wait anymore I just don't think I have the strength The strength to carry on Oh, I don't want to wait anymore I waited so long Forgot what I'm waiting for

The singer is essentially trying to get a girl to share a series of fantasies that would give license to otherwise refused physical intimacy. "Last two on Earth to start a new world," "Lost, trapped in the freezing cold," "Stranded on a desert isle." It might sound romantic, but it also lends itself to a sort of comedic desperation.
@KevinR11385 ай бұрын
Well, that’s very poetic, another way you could say it is: It’s about a guy trying to talk a girl into sleeping with him. Trying to get laid. Pretty simple really.

Great song. The style of production reminds me of Chicago. I don’t know if anyone can enlighten me on this. The 80s was a lot better than we give it credit for. Sure we had sequencers and drum machines and back then I hated those things but the skill was in the songwriting and these guys definitely had it. Kudos...

This must be the 1st song to not feature Fee Waybill as lead singer. And quite a departure musically from other Tubes songs. Bill Spooner does an exceptionally wonderful job as lead singer for this one. It's sad that it should have gone higher than it's peak of #35 in 1981. This is the Tubes Top 40 song, although "She's A Beauty" became their biggest and most recognized hit single.
@I_Have_The_Most_Japanese_Music8 жыл бұрын
Wikipedia makes a point of saying that Fee had nothing to do with the song, which I believe had a lot of David Foster involvement.
@ddherenow8 жыл бұрын
Actually, Bill Spooner sang lead on a number of their earlier songs. I Believe he was the lead singer on Up From the Deep, Pimp, Young and Rich, Strung Out on Strings, Only The Strong Survive, and possibly others. Fantastic songwriter and a great, soulful vocalist - I hope he's thriving!

It’s unfortunate. I think this is their best song. Love She’s A Beauty...but this is gold.
@twominutepianoman98682 жыл бұрын
Bill Spooner was the primary singer on their first three albums. He sang the vast majority of the songs on Young and Rich, and Now. Then Remote Control comes along and Fee is now the main singer. Would be a good interview question.

Ppl here keep pushing the Chicago comparisons. But this song was 1st, 1981. David Foster began working with Chicago the following yr, 1982, w/ Hard to Say I'm sry...Love me Tmrw, n onward in the 80's. Tubes were bf, so my thinking is Chicago were influenced by the Tubes n their sound courtesy of DF. Even after Peter Cetera left in 85, Chicago carried on with a sound similiar. Will you still love me, Chicago song from 1986, sounds a lil like this. IMHO.

If this is a love song, it's about finding love within yourself. We spend our lives waiting to be happy instead of just choosing it, which is where you end up when you get tired of endless waiting, an endless quest trying to live in the future which equates to a life of lack and wanting, Classic Zen Rock n' Roll.
@KevinR11385 ай бұрын
Please tell me you’re kidding. The tubes were masters of dead pan satire, the song is about all the way guys try to convince girls to sleep with them. It’s sang with such sincerity and panache that you forget to listen to the actual lyrics. It’s about trying to get laid.
