Today, I'm very proud to introduce you to two remarkable men and one unforgettable watch. It's the incredible story of how a Tudor Submariner played a part in forging a lasting bond between 1st Lieutenant, USMC, Barry Jones, and 3rd Hospital Corpsman, USN, Lorrie McLaughlin, bridging a 50-year gap between the battlefield in Vietnam and their lives today.

The question that really needs answering is: did the watch stop exactly when it was hit? In other words: did he get shot at exactly the time shown on that dial?! Fascinating story!

My mother escaped Saigon after the war, it was something like her 10th attempt. The communists repeatedly jailed her for what was essentially trying to defect. She finally left on a small fishing boat crammed full of people with nothing more than the clothes on her back and small piece of gold sewn into them. Long story short, the boat sank and most onboard were saved by an American Navy vessel somewhere in the middle of the ocean. With insane grit she scraped her way into the American Dream. She and so many other people (servicemen and the Vietnamese people) endured unimaginable hardship attempting to gain the freedoms that most of us have always experienced. Without these amazing servicemen, life as I know it would be drastically different. Thank you for your service, and thank you Hodinkee for yet another awesome video.

Amazing story. My fathers generation is that Vietnam era and we need to document as much or their tales that they feel comfortable doing. These service members never got the ticket tape parades. The fact that he kept it all those years is amazing, and maybe they aren't watch collectors. This is a story of humanity made possible by a watch and a great web site.

$150 for a Tudor sub. Man I know he said that was a third of his monthly pay but if you scale that up to today it should be 1000-1500 bucks not 3500-4500. Great story though. Thanks.

at the time these were actual tools...a rolex was none other than a quality time keeper, it was needed, not bought for other reasons. You do not need a mechanical watch nowadays, we have cellphones, quartz etc...what is left is history, craftsmanship and luxury, and as you don't need a ferrari to go to the grocery store you don't need a tudor/rolex and as it is a luxury good the price is high

Fascinating story. Very moving. There is nothing stronger than the bond between combat fighters. I am a veteran of the IDF Infantry I can relate to that sentiment. The men you served with and encountered life and death situations in the battlefield with are your BROTHERS FOR LIFE. The ones who didn't come back will be remembered forever. My service watch was an army grade Casio G-shock and I was lucky enough to not test what happens to it if it gets shot. Thank you Hodinkee for this video.

This is such an amazing story. I was recently buying a watch on watchuseek sales forum and as most of us do, i was negotiating the price. I had not looked at the sellers profile till then. When i did he turned out to be a retired marine who had served in Vietnam. I decided not to negotiate any further and accepted his offer. My father served the Indian army and i have deep respect for Armed forces. I shared my thoughts with him and like a true gentleman all he said was " Thank you, I appreciate your compliment". Needless to say that watch will always remind me of him and it will remain in my collection forever.

Great episode! Powerful. Amazing how that Tudor Sub survived a bullet, had been through Vietnam war and the memories and connection it represented between two soldiers. And 50 years later, finds it's way back to the original owner. Also, shocking how inexpensive a Tudor Sub was in 1968 compared to today. Once you own one, you have it for life.
