Stephen64138 Mary certainly had a wretched young adulthood.... loved, hated, threatened, and ignored by her tyrannical father, separated from her mother and with few supporters or friends to sustain her. Nevertheless, thIs courageous young woman triumphed over the uncertainty that dominated her life. Her successful fight for the throne was welcomed by the English who supported her as the true heiress. Not understanding her subjects opposition to the marriage to Philip if Spain was the beginning of the end. A determined and courageous woman for sure, but without the training and temperament to rule wisely or successfully.

@arlman19888 жыл бұрын
Really? He bedded so many women during his marriage to Catherine. I don't think they were happy at all. Henry loved no one but himself. He married Catherine also because of political reason, fearing her father would demand the dowry back.
@ashleymorales42958 жыл бұрын
Aw Aw I didn't say that he was an awesome husband, but it has been proven that male brains don't connect sex with love. He was very disloyal , but he probably didn't care for the,, considering how many her had. Yes, he loved himself over all others, but he did have affection for Catherine. It's hard not to feel close to someone you were married so long to.
@chooseyourpoison51058 жыл бұрын
They did love each other in the early days of their marriage, he wrote to the Duke of Suffolk describing her as "my most dear and well-loved consort" and he also competed in tournaments with the banner "Loyal Heart" for her. Henry did sleep with other women (Bessie Blount and Mary Boleyn among others) but that was expected behaviour for noblemen of the time. Catherine's father Ferdinand also slept his way through half the Spanish court despite his happy partnership with Isabella of Castile. Provided the kings did nothing to embarrass their queens and made sure any illegitimate children were provided for, both Isabella and her daughter Catherine were expected to turn a blind eye. If Henry had simply kept Anne Boleyn as a mistress there would not have been a problem; it was only when he wanted to divorce Catherine to marry Anne that the trouble started.
@Zalazalamero7 жыл бұрын
Ashley Morales he really loved her when he married her ( there wasnt political obligations any more, and many embassadors talked surprissed about the loving husband he was) but just like Anne he proved that he loved himself more. The second time he saw it was his fault and he couldnt accept it.

What's ironic is that Anne's daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, has a lot in common with Katherine of Aragon. In the history books, Henry did love Katherine (but it wasn't really a romantic love; it was a platonic love based on great friendship & respect). He idolized her & she had a lot to do with the success between alliances with other countries - even acting as ambassador for Henry when it was needed. I can't remember which battle or war, but at one point Henry was busy fighting another battle & the rest of the troops had to go off unexpectedly to fight another one. Katherine was pregnant & road out with the other troops (she lead them, though obviously did not physically fight, but still) to another battlefield b/c Henry couldn't be in two places at once. She had a miscarriage b/c of it, but she did it for Henry nonetheless. I just find it so funny that Queen Elizabeth I has a lot in common with Katherine (the same grace, strength, courage etc.) and yet Elizabeth was Anne's daughter. Weird but cool.

Well, Henry liked to view himself as the "good guy" and had a way of twisting things in his mind so that he ended up convincing himself that everything he did was justified, rather than admitting that he'd actually been an a**hole. I don't believe for a moment that he really thought Katherine of Aragon wasn't a virgin, but he convinced himself that she had slept with Arthur and thus wasn't truly Henry's wife, rather than admitting to himself that he had done wrong by his faithful wife of 20 years by running off with Anne the side chick. Same with Anne Boleyn - nobody, not even Henry, truly believed the nonsensical charges that Anne had slept with her brother and performed witchcraft to enchant the king, but good ol' Henry convinced himself it was true, rather than simply admit that he had been a gullible idiot who had thought with his dick instead of his head. Even the rubbish about Anne of Cleves being ugly doesn't stand up to scrutiny - she was actually described by contemporaries as being quite pretty, with blond hair, blue eyes and a curvy figure - but Henry convinced himself she was "ugly," so he didn't have to face up to the fact that he was getting rid of a wife of six months who hadn't actually done anything wrong.

ChooseYour Poison you are right I always thought that if he did not believe Katherine was not a virgin he would said so and not wait 20 years to say so

She didn't deserve such a tragic fate. But if Henry VIII hadn't divorced her then Elizabeth I and the Golden Age would never had happened. Out of all his wives, Catherine of Aragon was the most dignified.

Katherine of Aragon was the only queen , Henry feared . And that's a fact . She was enormously popular with the people . She could torn the country in two , and if she took the field , she would have won . Not to mention that her nephew was The Holy Roman Emperor , CharlesV. Trust me , Emperor Charles had much more muscle . Henry was scared shitless of Katherine !

What is the significance of Catherine kneeling before Henry? Why did the crowd and Henry act in the manner shown?

She was supposed to stand on the court assigned position and wait for her trial to be held. By addressing the king directly she shows that the trial holds no true authority to her but Henry as her husband still does.

Catherine of Aragon was a true humble person inside and out
