@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
Gingium Instead of the horrible AFM with a spring loaded door, it measures airflow based on intake temperature and manifold pressure. It gives you a lot of freedom to do whatever you want to the intake system like running a filter right on the front of the turbo and using a BOV without any drawbacks. (If you use a BOV on a turbo car with an AFM or a MAF you run rich between shifts).

Its hit or miss with oil restrictor. Don't use them. They are not precise and always load your turbo up with poorly regulated oil causing that unwanted blue smoke and shortening expensive turbo bearing life. I use the TurboSmart OPR. Its a turbo oil feed regulator that feeds your turbo a steady regulated 40psi of oil to your turbo at all times. It has a oil drain back return as well so there is never any turbo oil loading that is a very unwanted condition. Also install the TurboSmart in line oil filter as well. Its vital that oil being delivered to your turbo is filtered. You are now up to date on proper turbo oiling the right way.......your welcome👍

I think I already know your answer, but, gt2554r vs gt2560r? I currently have the 2554 journal bearing on the Miata. the 2560 looks mighty nice, but I figure i can get a 2554r CHRA and use my existing housings. The compressor wheel and turbine are the same, right?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Opt Good question. I'm not sure if the housings are identical, you might want to contact Garrett. As far as 2554 vs 2560, I have no experience with the 2560R, but I would have a hard time recommending against the 2554R for any reason if you have a 1.6 or early 1.8. If you have a 99+ 1.8 the 60R will probably be better suited.

Would the applications you use on your NA, also be practical on the NB2 (2004)? I have been following your build, and I want to do something very similar. Ive started to gather parts- but I dont know what the ECU will do under boost on an NB- if it will react the same as an NA. For reference, I want to run a comfortable 8lbs with no ECU or tuning card. Eventually I would like to get a MS and go up to 12lbs and aim for 200hp. Also, do you know if having a turbo will have any adverse effects since it is a VVT engine? Thanks for the great videos!
@nickelndiminit51368 жыл бұрын
Simple but awesome. Genius water routing bruh! Most efficient. Will copy liberally and credit appropriately when I can bring spidey from the stone age to the golden turbo age. Been eying the cast 1.8 manifold as a possible candidate for a mirror of this build to give 1.8 kiddies an option. I know egr would be an issue, and I would have to have a shop fab the down pipe. Any thoughts based on your experience with this build so far?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+NickelNDiminIt Yeah, even though it's the second turbo Miata I've pieced together, I've still had to buy things 2-3 times and not everything fits as expected. The real learning experience will be once it's on the road and I get to start working out the kinks.
@nickelndiminit51368 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel So after considering the options and details, I think someone needs to do a companion 1.8 build. You have the 1.6 really well covered, so I am thinking I could probably document the process for the 1.8 using your same formula for the B&B series. I think with a 5 psi wastegate, an FMU, etc. could work well on a 1.8. The key is whether that cast manifold sucks or not. So I think you pushed me over the edge.

hey Greg! love watching your videos! super helpful. this might be something obvious I completely missed but just wondering what you do with the o2 sensor where it's in the manifold do you drill it into your exhaust? and as well my 95 has a maf would I just leave that on the intake before the manifold?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
Sorry I kind of skipped over that information. I actually had the exhaust guy use the last 6" of the stock manifold to use at the bottom of the downpipe. It served two purposes: The flange mated up perfectly to the stock exhaust and it retained the stock o2 sensor bung. But, even if you don't go that route, it's really easy for any exhaust shop to add an o2 sensor bung to your exhaust.

what size are those water lines

hey greg, from my research on the interweb, it was mentioned that there is a drain plug for the turbo oil close to the oil filter. is this true? if it is, why choose to drill the oil pan as oppose to just using the pre-existing drain hole?

Because to route it over there is a pain, it's on the opposite side of the engine. Plus since turbos drain via gravity, you'd have to ensure the line took a continuous downhill path all the way around the front of the engine.

I noticed that the anti-surge porting on the compressor housing inlet has been welded shut.. what's up with that? advantages?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
There was never any anti-surge porting, I had a 3" inlet welded on instead of the normal 2.5" :)

Cool! neat trick!

I'm doing some modifications to my compressor housing, and having the mods tested on a flow bench. It is freaking amazing how sensitive turbo's are to inlet flow losses, because of the air speeds involved. For example, on my turbo, it is pretty much maxed out at around 400 cfm, and the air speed in the inlet at 400 cfm is roughly 240 mph (!). When the inlet was originally tested, we wanted to first establish how much vacuum was needed (on the flow bench) for the inlet to actually flow that 400 cfm. The guy got up to 33" of water and still hadn't got it to flow 400 cfm, and was thinking about using a larger bench... then he remembered to put a large radius on the opening on the housing. All of a sudden, the vacuum (aka test depression) fell to only 22.8" to flow 400 cfm.

+bandwagon240 His style's definitely not for everyone. But it was a fun time for sure hanging out with a big KZbinr and seeing the BRZ in person. Super clean supercharger setup.

+Mathieu Bombardier yeah I love TJ but he seemed rude in the video. I'm kinda sad how none of the owners go into big detail in the reviews. I'm a very detailed oriented person so I like to know everything that they've done. That's why I love Gregs channel
