The two become one flesh. Homily for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B.

We are still on the road with Jesus and the disciples as they slowly make their way to Jerusalem for the celebration of Passover. In today’s gospel the Pharisees ask Jesus whether it is permissible for a man to divorce his wife. This is a strange question because in first century Palestine all Jewish groups known to us permitted divorce; it was not a contested issue. However, the evangelist tells us the Pharisees are are trying to entrap him. Jesus uses the occasion to teach his disciples about marriage.
