Dad's old 48 Chevy farm truck wasn't 4-wheel drive but it had a two speed rear axle and that's exactly how we drove it with a load of grain on. However, for driving without a load we shifted to high range and went through the gears without split shifting.

I liked your comment about "GI" clutch less shifting: since the Statute of Limitations has expired and Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) is no more, I will admit I have done clutch less shifting in the taxpayers' Dueces. Part of it was the challenge of exactly matching the engine and road speed with the target transmission and transfer case selection. Nothing so sweet as going from gear to gear / range to range with no grinding, clunking and jerking! Especially, since it was Uncle Sam's truck ... rent free ;-)

Another great Deuce and a Half video. Keep them coming. I ran across a thread on a forum a while back about buying a Deuce and a Half and trying to get it registered and insured. Some states its almost an act of congress to do LOL. I live about 30 miles from a place you can go buy military vehicles that are ready to go and easily registered...not every state is that lucky, and it seems almost every state has its own set of rules for these types of vehicles unfortunately. The trouble I'd have buying one would be of course the $$$...or rather the lack of HAHA!!!...they are not cheap to get them in good running condition and paperwork ready to go to registration and insurance.

Does it actually top out half way up or can you pull it up to the level of the other pedals? Each pedal is adjustable so someone tall may have adjusted the clutch pedal so they could fit their knee under the steering wheel. If that's not it then it's time to break out the dash 20 to do some trouble shooting.

With a load on, either carrying or towing, you have a 8 speed tranny now. 1 thru 5 low to 3high thru 5high then od. making 8 moves on the shifting arm , 1lift on transfer bar and a pull on od button. When you first go thru talk yourself thru the whole thing then listen for the grind when you miss that transfer hop. Your steering is actually powered but it is known as a Manual Armstrong steering unit. Hopefully the computer sending unit isn't having a freeze from a cold ice cream cone prior to driving.

@mildlydisinterested3 жыл бұрын
With respect, things are a tad different in a semi than you describe. A semi has low and high range, but that isn't a splitter. Most modern (standard transmission) semis have both a range selector and a splitter. You start out in low range, normally in second. Compound if you are loaded really heavy. (Mine puts out about 300 hp and I weigh 97k and still don't use compound unless starting out on a hill.) You run your low range, then start over in high range. With a 10 speed, that's it. With a 13, you do it that way through low range and then once in high, you can split each of those gears with the splitter. With an 18, you can split them all. A 15 speed is even more different, but similar. Just different enough that it will confuse most folks when compared against what I just described, but it does have its place. Basically, low and high range are a way of making 6th gear right after fifth so that you have more gears available at low speed and a splitter is a way to divide gear ratios in individual gears, instead of affecting the gear ratio of the whole transmission. The 10 speed that I drive has the same shift pattern, that wonky 4/5 reversal, but I love it. Perfect hand rest on a long run and the pooch has plenty of room for bouncing around the cab and sleeper. :D

Thank you for the knowledge, I recently changed out the front bearings on my 1985 M35A2.. (by the way the driver side is reverse thread) and now I've moved on to my rear wheel bearings but when I've opened up the cover and pulled out the axel. it looked fresh and new. Would you recommend saving my new wheel bearings till they start winding or just replacing them now.. the term if "it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind.. anyways I would like to see how you do wheel bearings.. I had to weld the race to pound it out of the Hub that's why I'm not into tearing out four more on the rear.

Love your deuce and a half videos. Watched 'em all before getting my first deuce and a half (got 2 now). The shift lever on the transfer case is jumping around a lot after you shift to High. Any concern about it jumping out of gear? (Both of mine do this.) Know of any easy solution? Also, couldn't help but wonder if you actually get to full speed faster when doing this with a heavy load, or is the only benefit being easier on the drivetrain? Thanks!

44 years in the army. Started on M37 and M135, drove M35 for years. Instructed on many driver courses. Own and maintain 9 deuces. NEVER SPLIT SHIFT ON ROADS! They weren't designed for it and there is no need to do so. The manuals only include shifting the transfer on the move to allow dropping into low or stepping up to high while maneuvering cross country. 🙄

@Michael Calnan Thanks for your service. I did 2 years, 9 months and 6 hours in the US Army (but who was counting?). BC touched on it, the design criteria for over the road trucks vs. off road trucks are different. I never tried changing high / low while rolling.

If you have the transfer case engaged that drives the front axle because the ratios in the front and rear axles are different on dry hard surfaces like parking lots you’ll do some nasty driveline damage twisted drive shafts premature tire wear internal gearbox damage
@dw70946 ай бұрын
Not true. These transfers were equipped with a "sprag" unit to the front axle. Frankly, I never saw the purpose of split shifting the M35's. The 5 tons needed it when heavily loaded, especially the M809 Series with the big gap between 3rd and 4th gear.
@rangerdanger7662 жыл бұрын
I do not recall ever driving with transfer split shifting except when we deliberately started out in low range. Truck should do at least 75% of tasks strictly in hi range. But that was long ago so I could be wrong

Wow that's a weird 3-4-5 shift pattern! That would take me some time to get used to. I'd be going from 3 to 5 every time for like 2 weeks. 😄
@amirlach6 жыл бұрын
It's due to the overdrive 5th gear. A 15 over drive has the same pattern, you get used to it just like you get used to reverse being up and left instead of down and right on a pickup.
@ScottHamilton-hb9sb5 жыл бұрын
Do not split shift a deuce 1/2. It is completely unnecessary. Low range transfer case is for off road, up in the hills or mountains or for over weight loads. Use high range for all other loads.
@isaachousley3253 жыл бұрын
Alot of people dont understand the difference between a gear range and a gear split. A gear range is a range of gears that, depending on application, is sequential to a lower or higher range (ie on a 10 speed, 1-5 is low range while 6-10 is high range) or a ratio adjustment of the gears in the transmission (ie the difference between 4 low and 4 high on a 4x4). A gear split takes the normal gears within a range and provides a gear in between, creating a high and a low ratio for a numbered gear, "splitting" that gear (think 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, ect). In the dueces, the transfer case is a ratio adjustment range selection, to be selected at a stop.

Thanks for the video and once again, learn something new about these trucks. I do have questions (hint for another video or 2) about these trucks I haven't seen you cover. First is tires & rims. From what I understand from watching videos by another owner, the rims are split....are yours? If so, can replace them with single piece semi-truck size rims on these trucks? Make it a lot safer if/ when you have to pop off a bad tire to replace it. Second is seeing tires installed in 2 different places. One is stored vertically behind the cab, starting at around the bottom of the drivers door. The other is horizontal, again behind the cab, but starting about at the base of the drivers door. Third is how do you get these puppies out/put back in? Have you had a tire go bad on you while driving and if so, how did you replace it with the spare, meaning what equipment did you use?
@adamcovey26297 жыл бұрын
the frount tires usualy weare alot faster than the back as the front axals has a lot more weight on and is turn more.the tires are a pain in the ass to change esesualy If the rim has rusted I just jack it up with a 20 ton bottle jack

Don't talk about semis without more research. I'm a trucker. So, here we go. The only transmissions that you split the basement gears is 15, 18 speeds. 13 you split top. 9/10 you don't actually split. You go (10speed) 1-5 flip the splitter to high and go back through. Super 10 you split every gear. Clutches are for those that don't know how to float.
@deuceandguns5 жыл бұрын
So my point that a Deuce and a half has almost nothing in common with a Semi is true. Thanks.
@philfrancis62386 жыл бұрын
What a M35 has is a "mud stick" duplex mv because you cannot split each gear. It does allow you to use the 4-5 shift twice which is the tightest gear change in the truck. The proper method to shift a 2 sticker is to move whatever lever is being up shifted FIRST. Wh et n accelerating that would be the transfer, when downshifting the main would go first. The truck should launch in 2nd-low without difficulty. You should always back up in low range. The hi-lo. Unlike a CCKW OR M38 has nothing to do with the front wheel drive . The transfer case also facilitates towing as put in neutral and go. It is only necessary to drop drive shafts if the problem is the transfer itself.
@MrDJ2175 жыл бұрын
Excellent video
@aussiebloke29988 жыл бұрын
Brilliant! Another Deuce Video. I would have thought you would have put the transmission into neutral and then shifted the Transfer case and then shifted the transmission into the next gear while on the move. Did I hear a 'Thud' when you shifted the transfer case from low to high? I've not tried it yet on mine. Are you going to do any more Video's on the winch and its operation like you mentioned in the winch video? Aussie.

I've seen duce in a halfs doing 55mph down the road does that hurt the motor and is it possible to have a slightly higher gear ratio to get a higher speed without hurting the motor
@deuceandguns7 жыл бұрын
If by Deuce and a Half you mean an unmodified M35 series truck then 55mph is pushing that engine at it's limit. It's designed to run at 45-50mph all day long in convoys but running faster than that for a long duration is really unnecessarily stressing the engine. If taller tires or a different gearing are added then faster speeds can be run safely for long periods but will result in more downshifting in mountainous areas. What's typical is newbie buys a Deuce and drives it everywhere at 55-60 mph because the engine is strong enough to push a 14,000lb brick down the road at that speed. That person then makes fun of all us cautious Deuce drivers and explains that they know what they're doing and we know nothing. Fast forward a year or two and that newbie is telling the world how poorly built the multi-fuel engine in Deuces are because their engine threw a rod through the block while all us just shake our heads.
