Well you're certainly having some fun with your new toy Sandy and what an awe inspiring place to do it. I can't live all that far from you, I'm just off the Ridgeway on the stretch between Scutchamer and Goring and have visited the white horse and wayland smithy as you have so we've certainly stomped through the same mud. I absolutely love the Ridgeway so thank you so much for this new perspective. Be safe and be lucky. Wol

My grandmother, born in 1925 in California, used to tell us stories about HER grandmother and great parents coming from a place with a white horse on the hill before they came to the US. A relative just sent me a census copy of their info listing their town as "Vale Of White Horse" and the Google search kind of shocked me. That's the f'ing White Horse that has teased my curiosity ever since I could remember. I guess it sounds silly but Grandma was hearing that story in the 1930s from her grandmother who was born in the 1860s, retelling it from her father who was born in the 1830s. Finding the White Horse was pretty awesome but your video made me feel like I found it in person. Great work!

Thats a wonderful story. I have lived within 7 miles of the White horse all my life and even where I am sat now if it weren't for trees and houses I could look out and see it. The Vale of the White horse is a district but in that area are many villages and a small town called Wantage

It seems to me that these wonderful ancient sites have been waiting for drone-cams to be invented! They give us a bird's-eye view of the landscape's artistic story-telling in what really must have been the way they were intended to be seen - from the air. Perhaps the builders had to live above deep, un-penetrable, dangerous forests or on the high points they felt closer to their Creator, but who did they expect would see them? Probably other folk miles away on another hilltop above the forests, but they seem to be angled towards the sky. The landscape itself is like a living body, an earth goddess, all soft and curvy and so perhaps the 'horse' (or dragon) was a 'tattoo' for her (one commenter said he wanted a tattoo in its style because it is a 'beautiful design'. It reminds me more of a wild cat - a panther or cheetah. Could they have been here once? Great musical accompaniment. Well done, I really enjoyed it. Thanks

I've really enjoyed just watching this excellent film. I stayed at The White Horse at Woolstone in July 2022 in order to see the White Horse and the Ridgeway which I did but unfortunately I got an attack of a recurring condition so had to phone a friend to get me home. But it was worth it.

Sandy, thanks for sharing, we keep meaning to head back for a wander. My OH and I had our first date, walking and talking around White horse hill, Dragon hill and Wayland's smithy. Eighteen years later, I want a small tattoo of the horse, as it means something and is a simple but beautiful design. I used to live in Letcombe Bassett, a beautiful area.

Sandy i have watched a number of your videos. i have a question for you. I'm looking for information on local Christmas time traditions that are unique to the white horse hill and Westbury horse area locations. on Christmas eve 2017 i set off from Dorset to Derbyshire on my 1983 125cc Suzuki scooter. i had not ridden that route before but as a passed through towards the end of a lightly forested area i was able to for the first time to see in the distance a white horse on a hill on my left and on my right i noticed sat back off the forest road four people standing by the road. two small children and an elderly couple with them all waving friendly at passers by including myself. i once heard on bbc south that some local traditions have been passed down the generations even today are kept alive by grandparents and such like. Sandy are you aware of this tradition that as far as I'm aware only takes place in those locations on Christmas eve. where does its beginnings come from. are you aware of this tradition at all? not being from that area myself i wanted to find out more about it.
@WiltshireMan2 жыл бұрын
I'm not aware of this tradition and even did a search online but nothing associated with the Uffington white horse

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGKpfqShorqDebM Some info on the Uffington Horse and the other White Horse hill figures for you.
@WiltshireMan Жыл бұрын
Thats quite interesting, I'm not sure though is there was any for thought in the alignments as the figures had to be placed on high ground which occurs seemingly randomly. I've got a book here by ALfred Watkins called The Old straight track, he talks about alignments and how early man would have navigated this country. A learned friend of mine says some of what he says is accurate but some is just fanciful. Just have to try and keep an open mind on some this as they can be difficult to prove. Thanks for sending me your video, Much appreciated :)

I've already watched that video. It's awesome but also very risky. When I first started flying my copter I flew it in my garden to a good height, but I will never fly it again in a built up area with people close by because they can fail and have been know to go out of control so caution has to be exercised.
