This time we’re tackling unrealistic beauty standards, Facetune, Snapchat and Instagram filters, diversity (or lace thereof), social media, and ~girlboss~ marketing. Can I just confess my insecurities for a sec? I just need to get it out without somebody telling me to shut up for once. I don't like my undefined Asian nose, my thin dark brown hair, my non glass skin, how skinny I am, my nose blackheads, and my small eyes. I think after typing out this long list of things I don't like about myself, I noticed how small these things are. I just wish I didn't have to feel like I needed to prove the rest of the world that I was worthy by being beautiful. I don't need to prove anything to anyone, but I constantly pressure myself to think that I do. Now, i'm realizing that I am beautiful. Not by the world's standards, but beautiful in a way that i'm starting to start to love myself.

@@bconni2 I don't think beauty standards are universal? Asians and western beauty standards are so different and they keep evolving too. And idk about political but yeah they are capitalist. Like of course they are. These companies thrive on people's insecurities to make money. And the part about 'rationalizing the fact that you're probably not good looking' like bruh how do you know? @@bconni2 Like Ashley said in that video, simple stuff like an instagram filter, can make someone feel bad about their appearence. I mean, making a filter that basically makes someone more white. Especially since, in messed up yet popular media, it seems that there is a very clear standard set in media for "beautiful people".

I always felt that way: asian wasnt pretty. My parents are immigrants who are just so grateful to be in america and are used to a more grotesque kind of racism so they dont understand it. We also live in a white community so theres no one really to talk to about it. Not until an older gentleman basically called me a monkey for being asian did I realize that what I felt was legitimate. I found communities online and bestdressed really hones in on this well. Shes a godsend and super talented.

“I didn’t realize that all the things I hated the most about my face were the things that were most asian” I felt this in my core. I just realized this last year. I’m Hispanic, though I often get confused for Asian, especially when I moved to NC from NM where pretty much everyone is Hispanic. I realized it differently though. One day, as I was thinking about the features on a face that I found to be most beautiful, I realized that it was a white face. Rounded eyes, pale skin that turned pink in cold weather, smooth hair (I have curly hair) and the two things you listed: a pointed noise and strong cheekbones. THESE ARE PRIMARILY WHITE FEATURES. Of course I could never be happy with my face. I wanted to achieve something that I could never have. I was so mad at myself for this internalized idea of beauty and surprised that somehow, though I have found so much beauty in a variety of skin tones all my life, it was still ingrained in me that white features were the epitome.

Angel, that’s what my friend did sometimes. i don’t talk to her as much now. i realized its very very toxic.. you’re beautiful and you shouldnt tolerate that. she just wants a reaction out of you. act unbothered, or if it REALLY bothers you, tell her!! but be chill about it. also this last part might sound harsh, but if you don’t want to do any of the other things i suggested, then give her a little taste of her own medicine. (i wouldn’t, because i don’t want to stoop down to their level). BUT JUST REMEMBER YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL 🥺💗! I KNOW IT. own it, cause you’re a true queen. you’ll learn to be confident in yourself!

My boyfriend does the same thing to me. He points out every new pimple or if I look a little plum that day. We had a facetime after ages (yknow quarantine) and he pointed out how fat I had become. He points out my body hair too or how dark my skin is. But I'm in love with the way he's so spontaneous and adventurous. Everything about him just makes me feel lucky to have him. But I've noticed i dress up and sit in front of the mirror for atleast an hour and a half before I've to meet him. (And I don't even use makeup. Cus it's supposed to take time. Idk what I do that entire hour) I suck in my stomach sometimes too I guess. Idk why I said all that. You don't have to reply. I'm just venting. That video was beautiful. I needed that. 😔😫💕

You also gotta understand what your body is trying to communicate to you through these skin issues. Our bodies are electromagnetic information fields that demonstrate the issues we are facing in our lives by transmitting information. This information will then show up in our physical body as errors like dis-ease, skin issues, etc. Really what I'm trying to say is to pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you, and don't ignore the signs it's trying so hard to communicate 💚

It kinda shocked me when I later saw a couple other kids pull their eyelids back and laugh as they did the "chinese eyes". Later on I'd look back and realise that stuff like this is subjective; beauty standards are pretty pointless. @pleasedontlookforme8036
@pleasedontlookforme8036 2 жыл бұрын
@@giannakayira8133 I get that feeling too, though for me it's "I'd rather be southeast Asian than Central Asian (iranic/afghan) because southeast Asians are so gorgeous". But then lately I've been asking myself why I don't think that I'm beautiful being the race that I am now, and once I evaluated that, like Ashley, it always came back to Eurocentrism and Eurocentric featurism. Anime consumption also really heavily affected me aswell (I grew up on it and still heavily consume it), which whilst also indirectly promoting Eurocentric beauty standards, despite being of Japanese origin (though that's a massive topic in and of itself), brought to me toxic Asian beauty standards as well. I mainly really hated my big nose, which ironically enough is my most ethnic feature since I'm fairly white passing, and I also felt I wasn't light enough, or tall enough, or I was insecure about my jawline, or my body, or my unruly hair - and I would see Asian girls and white girls as women who were born without my "ugly" features - they'd be paper-white fair, small nose, the white women were tall, the Asian girls had beautiful jawlines, and both had the most silky manageable, beautiful hair. But these are just stereotyped generalisations of very vast populations, and most of these people don't look like the beauty standards their societies enforce, which harms them just as much as me. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, not every Asian woman is the perfect image of an Asian woman you have in your head, and being African doesn't make you any less beautiful.

6:20 okay so i feel like i don’t fit in, because i live in the netherlands, where most girls and boys have blue eyes, blonde hair and all that, but i have dark brown hair and darker skin and dark brown (almost black) eyes. people, boys, girls, they all make jokes about me and say that i’m turkish, and for some reason that’s bad there (like people call people that like it’s a bad thing) and even if i’m not turkish because i’m not, it’s just annoying. a girl bullied me in middle school once, throwing food at me and calling me names. and i don’t want to go there anymore because all my friends are pretty and blonde and i’m the only one that has dark skin and brown hair in my class. everyone there is blonde and yeah.. i’ve been faking that i’m sick and i don’t feel at home anymore where i live. quarantine has been the best thing ever and since when quarantine was almost over my mom got it i got to stay home 2 more weeks. (my mom is okay now, i’m gonna go to school in 2 days) but yeah that’s it i just had to vent welp also i’m 13 so maybe it’s just a phase edit; thank you all in the replies so so so much, it really made me feel better. i’m 14 now, going back to school and i’m starting to love myself and my different features more and more everyday. i know how to stand up for myself and don’t let people walk over me anymore, and i have beautiful amazing gorgeous friends who help me aswell!! thank you so much everyone, all the messages literally made me cry of happiness!!

Oh my goodness I really relate to this. I have quite an olive complexion and dark hair and I have been told that I’m every ethnicity under the sun - not asked, actually TOLD that that must be what I am. It’s strangely frustrating because I was born in England, and so were my parents, and my grandparents. I never know what to say when people ask me. And I love what you said about people seeming to suggest that it would be a bad thing if you were a different ethnicity. It’s quite bizarre and sad. Also I love acting and my ambition is to do it for a living, so I feel like I’m stuck in this tiny bracket of specific roles I can play. I’ve actually been told that I can’t play specific roles because I’m not blonde and pale enough. It drives me mad. Anyway I just thought I’d share my experience with this so you know you aren’t alone- I really hope things get better for you because you seem like a lovely person and what you look like should never define you. Have a lovely day!

I’m not a poc, but I’m not Anglo Saxon either, and I completely relate to this. I went to a super ethnic school and then switched to one that was mostly white. I suddenly became so insecure about my nose, how hairy I was, and my frizzy hair. Still working on unlearning that mindset but I hope to empower other people along the way!!

I know this sucks so much, and it sucks even more to see other poc (I see this particularly in a lot of asians, since I have more experience with that side of poc) falling victim to this to the point where they have internalised racism and hatred towards their own culture and features bc of the stereotypes and ideas projected upon us by white people and society ):

@@jess6155 yeet i'm half white but i never spent time with my white side of the family, and growing up in vancouver, i was always surrounded by asians. i love that side of my family, but everybody (my friends and strangers) honestly think i'm, like, full white? and, i don't know why that makes me feel really sad but it does? it kinda just makes me feel like an imposter. can't joke about being asian with my friends, can't identify myself as a white girl. i feel really left out honestly and it sucks. i know my friends deal with wanting to be lighter, but honestly? i wish i wasn't stuck in the middle, looking like an alien, like i don't really belong anywhere. it's stupid. and it's weird because i've got all features that don't suit my face at all. and, i know every asian looks different (my mom looks half, but she's full, my half w/a little cousins look full white, and my full asian cousins look half, my grandparents look full), but i just wished i looked a little more like one side with features more proportionate to one? because i've never really met a person who looks like me, and half the time i don't even recognize the person staring back at me. barely register them as human, or female or male (hence the makeup). idk. i just... wish i looked more like my mom's side of the family. because at least i know what they look like, and most of them are still alive, y'know?

I've been through a state where I hated me as a person. I became the person who looked down on others and made people feel bad. After that i lost the people that mattered to me. And my first goddamned response was to change how i look because apparently it helps because it's easier than to love yourself. I can loose weight but i could not for the sake of me loose my pride. And that became my routine. Even after I got everything i could physically want. I was never happy. This made me realize how dumb I was before and now I'm trying to work on my confidence and empathy. I wanna be kind more than i want to be beautiful. You make me realize that.

I’m so happy that I appreciate my features so much more now and can be proud of my personal achievements as well. It’s a tough journey with many ups and downs, but it’s nice to see you reaching that point of introspection and enlightenment faster than I did.

4:56 Broke my Heart. It really isn’t about us girls, it’s about the beauty standards society has show to us. We need to realise that we can love every inch of us and that there’s absolutely Nothing wrong with that. In a society that profits with your insecurities, to like yourself is an act of protest. To every Girl that is reading this: you’re beautiful, but you are also so much more than that, you’re amazing, extraordinary, authentic, and much more. Live free and stay strong.

It's other people that are still in awe of this warped sense of beauty and still think that this is normal and right when really in actual fact the industry has sold us problems and insecurities dressed up in bottles and creams instead of nessesary products because if we all were shown everything "wrong" with us with no comment on how or why its ugly or needs to be changed beauty would just be the uniqueness and variety in us all x
