True, but it is hard to not be a product junkie in the beginning, because you have to try different products to see what ingredients work well your hair. I am in year 4 right now, and am STILL and just figuring out the perfect detangling method, the perfect oils for my pre-poo, etc

You hit it right on the head. It takes WORK! I feel really insulted when people say that the ONLY reason my hair is long is because of genetics. This is the result of seven years of deep conditioning, gentle handling, oiling, and yes even praying. What you get from Mom and Dad is only going to take you so far. You've got to do your part as well. And NO ONE is just washing their hair and going!

If you start off with short natural hair, it doesn't take that long on wash day. It's when it starts to get longer that it starts to take more than 30 minutes to do.

Courtney LoCicero agreed, with my twa in the first year, big chop took me down to about an inch and at the end of year one I'm at about 6 inches after my annual trim, washing was super easy, even now the wash day routine takes me a couple hours if i include styling.

Lol. I have no idea why on earth it is called a wash n go either. For me it is the most difficult and time consuming hairstyle to do.
@kitcatmeeow571
@kitcatmeeow571 7 жыл бұрын
MsFlamingFlamer , no one ever said that every natural care "method," works for EVERY natural curly girl. The wash n go, works for SOME textures and not for others. The wash n go is ALSO LIMITED to the geographical climate you live or visit. I have used the wash n go since 1990. But, I also live in a warm climate. If I lived in a cold climate, I would NOT use the wash n go method, because it is WAAAY TOO COLD to do this! So, ALL of these factors have to be considered, including exercise regimine, heavy perspiration, etc.
@MsFlamingFlamer
@MsFlamingFlamer 7 жыл бұрын
Kitcat Meeow never said it didnt "work". i like it and it looks good but it should be called something besides a wash n go. its labour intensive to define each curl, make sure there is enough product, dry etc. its easier for me to just twist my hair or even put curlers in. i can do 8 flat twists in my head and call it a day as opposed to a wash n go and making sure every single curl is good and then waiting for it to dry or risk heat damage by diffusing.

Lol If my hair was as long as yours, it would be wash, condition, slap some gel in and twist it back in a bun and go till I got time to define and rake and detangle. I rarely even do that with short hair. Lol! I do not envy you detangling them 18 plus inches. God only give you what you can handle so I have short hair. Lol!

That's actually my preference, frizz and fuzz mixed in with some defined coils. For me it looks fuller with more volume but again.I don't have a huge fro or triangle fuzz that you can't see my face if it frizzes up. So not everyone can allow the frizz.

Products for my natural hair are no longer expensive. A capful of any shampoo for dry hair mixed with a cup of water is all I need. Any conditioner mixed with a little of my fave oil turns a cheap product into an expensive one. Honey pre poo or bentonite clay & water deep conditioner once a month also leaves my hair in great shape. Finally, buy a real aloe vera leaf, spoon the gel inside into a blender, blend, pour into ice cube molds and freeze. Pop a couple out when you need them, melt, add some oil - BOOM - all natural gel. Rake it thru wet detangled hair and you look like a million bucks for pennies.

I am glad that I don't have to use "Natural products" to get my hair done.. I still use the drug store brands and it works great for me.. Suave and Aussie Moist all the way for me ^_^ I have noticed that every time black people start a different trend or way of life these big businesses will slap the name of that new trend on the bottle and make it more expensive than what it should be because they know black folks will spend their last on their hair.

Chelsea Earnest those fairy knots are the worst, I've just moved to that stage in my natural hair process. I really hate it that I have to change up my laziness to prevent those single strain knots. now I'm a duo rage girl and I'm hoping it stays on all night. I truly don't remember this before my perm period.
@chelzchelzz19
@chelzchelzz19 7 жыл бұрын
I never dealt with this when I was natural as a kid, I started getting relaxers at like 13 maybe or 14. And now the only way I can prevent them is by keeping my hair in a stretched out state, but I miss my curls when I do that for a long time.. I guess I'm just going to always have to wear my hair stretched if I want to keep single strand knots at a minimum. It is what it is.
@LadyAzama

@chelzchelzz19

It mainly bothers me because the knots make it hard for me to detangle and they end up causing me breakage, so I literally have to keep my hair stretched or it leads to breakage for me. My hair is so time consuming, it drives me crazy.

Great, honest and funny video. I've been natural for 20 years and you would think I would have a high level of expertise, but NO. I learn from YT, through trial and error and reading (my fav book being "Grow It" by Chicoro). I used to get frustrated that I didn't know my hair better than I did, but now, I believe my hair is always changing (based on weather, products, styles and tools) and even when I feel I know it, it still changes!

georgiapeach310 Thanks for sharing that. I've been natural for 10 years and I'm still struggling. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Frustration levels are getting higher and higher. There are times when I just want to throw in the towel. It was so much easier wearing braids 10 months out of the year, getting them redone every two months. Sometimes I just want to do a literal "wash n go"! Wet it and forget it! 😂 Slap some oils on and keep it movin! Whatever it looks like at that point is what it will be for the day! 😜

TIP: 1) buy your hair products from places you know you can return them. 2) Don't try to force products to work. If you have to use fist fulls of a product it doesn't work. go get your money back. 3) not all popular items are for you. ex: a lot of people love coconut oil but it's not for everyone. for some people it just sits on top of the scalp and clog the pores and cause irritation. it can also cause breakage over time because it blocks moisture or can make your hair hard because it has a ton of protein. 4) technique and the right products are the key to a speedy wash day. Slip & moisture are the most important thing when looking for conditioners and styling products. 5) it's common to have multiple textures it does not mean you did something wrong or something is wrong with you. 6) be very careful of curly cuts. they're popular but it's not the best method for everyone. do your research for what method will work for you.

Great video. You kept it all the way real. I think the key is learning to master your hair and that takes time and trial-and-error. I'm ashamed to say it took me years to figure out that my hair needs to be ph balanced...the end. Using a lot of products from different lines with different ph levels would give me crazy dry results....like tumbleweed. I tried everything, eliminating coconut oil, hard water, shea butter, and glycerin. Now I've discovered that I get more definition and less frizz when my products start at a ph of 6 to wash and then lower with each step (leave in, moisturizer) to about 4.5. If I have products with a higher ph I want to use I just add a little acv or aloe Vera to lower the ph (add to what you're using not the bottle or container). Everyone's hair is different...I see youtubers slather all kinds of products on their hair and get awesome results but not I. Another suggestion is that when trying a new product line you should start with clean clarified hair to really see how the product performs

I went to the salon once every 2-3month but in between that I had to figure it out. I can understand how if you never did your own hair that going natural can be a game changer. But I think in the long run it is worth the learning curve. Not only because of the length and all that but because women and men can get a piece of their heritage back. It's our hair but some of us never grow up with others teaching us how to braid or nurture it, lost knowledge. The result is a rude awakening when we try now but hopefully, the next generation won't face that, we will pass on our knowledge.

I agree with everything you said except for the expensive part. You can get a lot of items for reasonable prices especially when you DIY your products. I DIY'd for the first two years until I figured out which ingredients my hair liked and responded well to and which ingredients weren't good for my hair. Now in year three I have a good grasp of the techniques that work for me and I can invest in some of the pricier products by selecting for ingredients that I know work for my hair.

I went natural because my hair was so damaged from perms. When I went natural that wasn't even a term yet. I went to a beautician I knew and asked to have the perm cut off; and there happened to be a woman there getting her hair twisted. My stylist asked if I wanted something like that and I said yes because I didn't know what else to do with my hair. By the time she cut off all the perm, my hair went from just past my shoulders to barely an inch long. I didn't cry but I did tear up a little. By the time she was done I really liked the twists...but I still didn't know what to do with my hair so I just kept going to the beauty shop every 2 weeks to get retwisted. I actually loved my hair super short so it would grow to scraping my shoulders and I would have it cut again. After going on this circle for about two years I finally discovered KZbin and that there was people like me with natural hair on there; this was like 2007 and so I began to binge on everything natural and instead of going to the beauty shop every two weeks I would go every 3 weeks and that extra week I would play in my hair and try new things out. I did just what you said and it was perfect, plus I didn't have to commit to it for long because I was going back to the beauty shop. I found out on my own, just like you, that what I was seeing on KZbin took more time than in the video (though they were more real back then about how long things take). When I got paid I'd buy a new product. Best thing I did as a new natural was find a subscription to hair products because it let me try a lot of things for just a little money. Thanks for the great video. Your tips and expectations were great and something that I too wish someone had said...even though there was no one that I knew to ask at that time. Its better now because there is so much knowledge out there. Its not so good now because a lot of people on KZbin want to portray themselves as the "Perfect Natural" and there's just no such thing. I'm definitely going to share this with some people I know because you give great expectations. Thanks again!

Hi Didi! I love this video. This was actually my second time watching it. Even though I’ve been natural for two years now and have a pretty good handle on how to manage my hair, I find your content very helpful. Like yours, my hair is very dry, kinky, and shrinks like nobody’s business but when stretched out, it’s mid back. You made a comment about consistency being key, and I can attest to that. I wash once every 1 to 1 and a half weeks, and I believe that’s what helped me in maintaining length. Thanks for sharing the realness about the process and not holding out. Be blessed...

I have to disagree about hair products being expensive. There are so many quality drugstore products for less than $10. Not to mention, you can stock up on the items when there's a sale or bogo.

BDet313 part of going natural is using products that contain ingredients that use less harmful chemicals not just for hair but body. These cheaper products tend to have ingredients that maybe harmful to body and hair. Part of the journey is to use products such as oils that are beneficial with vitamins, minerals.

Excellent job giving viewers the truth. I experienced everything you described about watching videos to learn how to do my natural hair. I honestly experienced the opposite with my hair texture from relaxed to natural. I did a true wash-n-go one time. I washed & conditioned it and went on my merry way. When I got home, I had to repeat the process and do all the extras know as a wash-n-go now. You also gave the correct advice about rethinking going natural if you don't have the time to care for your hair. The more I look at your hair...I see 4a, 4b, & 4c textures. Your hair is beautiful curly or straight.

That was so real about watching a KZbinr's technique, trying it and failing and then in my case, transferring the disappointment to almost resenting my hair type instead of realizing it just takes practice and/or modifying the technique to my particular hair needs. Crazy because anything else we do (sports, our work, etc.) we understand it takes practice. You're awesome, please keep it up :)

Yes to all of this! I think I tried a wash n go. My hair has two textures, but both are thick. Washing it is a literal chore. No one told me, I would have a pattern of bad hair days. My curls will start out crazy. Because I got a perm at 11, put years of heat and products in my hair, also dyed it once. So because of those things, my hair went through a limpy like stage. You must wear a nightcap. Not just to wear it to make hair somewhat manageable. Also to protect your face. Because silk pillowcase + no cap= an oily face in the morning. I have a lot of stuff I would have loved to known about. But I love how it is now. Strong, curly, healthy, and so thick. Those bad hair days suck. But there are days where I am digging how it looks. Like I can conquer the world!

And YES, nobody told me this 😡! The mornings are the worst! I "Big Chopped" and my hair is currently in a short tapered cut, so when I wake up - I've got a dark brown cotton ball on my head. From the moment I get up, I'm preparing my daily hair products for my 20 minute morning routine....😂 Okay...back to the video!

Girl... in this video you was truly preaching! U are my new favorite natural hair KZbin channel! After watching several of your videos u seem real and genuine about your hair and the information you give. B4 I went natural I watched natural85 and mahoganycurls and I actually thought that my natural hair would be like there's but my hair ended up being very different. I didn't know how unique each woman's natural hair pattern was. I was completely ignorant because my sister is a professional beautician and did my hair my entire childhood and teen years. Now my back and sides are shaved because I didn't have the time and patience for my hair. The top part is now natural because over a year ago a texturized my hair to loosen the pattern but it's since grown out. I'm trying not to texturize again but if I do whatever. Anyways you are truly a hair inspiration keep doing what your doing!

@@DSFAVORS I'm the total opposite now... When I first went natural back in 2008, I put on a lot of makeup and big earrings to compensate for the fact that my hair was about an inch long because I chopped it completely off ... fast forward 11 years later and about four big chop later and whenever I put on a wig or have my hair straightened, I feel uncomfortable... I totally feel more confident in at home and myself with my natural hair... Even when people compliment the wigs, I let them know that I would prefer to have my hair out but I just didn't feel like taking the time to do it LOL

BEST VIDEO EVER!!!!! I've been natural for a year and before that I wore weaves. I didn't do a big chop or anything and I didn't consider it a journey I just stopped wearing weave. My hair has grown in the past 12 months which is great. I wished I watched this video before I stopped wearing weave as this is most honest video on you tube! I was so bombarded with terminology, and the pressure to have my hair turn out looking like the girl on the vid! And the cost, girl if you think it's expensive in America, it's double in UK.. I'm having surgery in August and believe I'm wearing a weave as I'm in hospital for a week and have a 12 week recovery - and unlike every other natural I won't be calling it a "protective style" ITS WEAVE and it's my hair and my choice. - thank you for your honesty!!!!

Love this video! Great advice! I happened upon it when I first went natural 5 months ago and I just re-watched it and am glad I followed your advice in the beginning! Wash n go videos I saw were not for me! I want a wash n go to be just that! My hair looks best right out of the shower so I put my leave in, oil and my curl activator and my gel, shake my head and go! I let it air dry - it still takes more than a day for my hair to dry so shrinkage is not a big deal for me anymore now that I have a little length to it. BE PATIENT was the best advice for me! I hated my natural hair at first because I didn't see a curl pattern. Once I found what my hair needed, it got easier from there. I've learned so much about my hair watching the YT videos and now I'm so happy with my results! Thanks for putting me on the right track!

I have very fine hair strands, but also high density hair (I'm 4c) This means that when I detangle I have to be extra extra careful to not break my hair because of how fine it is. My detangling sessions alone can last about two hours - this is outside of washing, D.C'ing and styling which can set me back another three hours or so. Natural hair is so time consuming; and you're right, so many KZbinr's don't tell you how much time they actually spend on their hair. It's so great to see a video that tells it like it is. I've followed the natural hair community for so long and recently decided to unfollow so many people from KZbin and Instagram because I got tired of the nonsense. The natural community is supposed to uplift us and show us how to be comfortable in our own skin, yet all I've seen is colourism, preferential treatment to certain hair types and obsession with curl definition etc. It doesn't feel real at all. It's great to see someone who can still be real and share the good, the bad and the ugly, so people can at least know what to expect.

I stopped relaxing my hair in 2011, I minimized straightening my hair since 2012, and I cut my relaxed ends in 2013 and now I am here with 17 inches in the front, 15 inches in the crown, and I had troubles in the back so its about 11 inches since May. (Next length check is in one month). The back grew 2 inches in 3 months. Its trying to catch up. Collectively, my hair is passed my shoulders now, even the back part of my head. Im happy with my natural hair and it takes a lot of patience and trial and error, but I like my "poofs" and my hair is extra soft now. Thank you for this video!! I really enjoy your honesty about how hard it is to maintain our natural hair. Its all worth it in the end though.

Your natural hair is beautiful in both the straight and curly state. I'm so glad you made this video! So many videos give new naturals an unrealistic expectation. I've learned on my own through trial and error. No matter what videos you watch, each experience will be unique to the individual. My daughter big chopped 4 years ago. There are "lazy naturals" like my daughter, but they are still natural. She doesn't find going natural" difficult or time consuming because she's not trying to have hair perfection. So then what really does "going natural" mean?
@cateyes2103
@cateyes2103 7 жыл бұрын
Going natural simply means growing out/cutting off relaxed hair. As for the products/methods, there's no one right way to do it that defines someone as natural. It's whatever your hair likes.
@DrSimpleBeauty
@DrSimpleBeauty 7 жыл бұрын
Yes that's my understanding too. But she conflates going natural with cost of upkeep, and other ancillary and "personal choice" aspects. She defines "going natural" very different from the way you said (and I agree with).
@cateyes2103
@cateyes2103 7 жыл бұрын
She didn't really define going natural. In this video I think she was saying everyone's experience will be different and to not base your experience off someone else's. To be realistic about the time it will take for upkeep. Depending on your hair type and thickness, it may be very easy and cheap to care for your hair. If it's super thick and coily, it's going to be time consuming and possibly expensive if you go through a lot of product. It can be especially difficult if your hair is short, thick and curly/kinky.
@devondavis7246
@devondavis7246 7 жыл бұрын
This has been true in my experience as well. She mentioned that caring for natural hair is difficult, but IMHO, it's only as difficult as you make it. If you feel like you always have to wear your hair down or in "out" styles, that requires a different type of maintenance than someone who is okay with wearing a protective style for longer. Some people wash once a week, some can go longer than that with good results too. They're all natural either way. It's about the demands that you put on yourself.

Thank you for being so honest and real about going natural! I am trying to decide if I want to go natural but am not sure about the time and if I will even like my hair. I have been watching many youtube videos and yours is the first that talks about what it's like, the pros and cons. Thanks again!

I just found your channel yesterday and subscribed immediately, and am playing catch up from the first of the year, lol. Your texture is similar to mine. I also have waist length hair and have been natural for almost 20 yrs, but did not do a big chop, just transitioned slowly (the struggle was real at times). And even being natural for so long, I still switch products from time to time. I love your videos!

I'm a natural college student and I wish someone would've told me how expensive this would be. I defiantly wasn't prepared to start paying $20 overtime I bought deep conditioner. The past few months I've had to make my own deep conditioners that don't work as well as some KZbinrs claim. I also wish I knew how hard it would be to deal with all the different textures in my hair once I transitioned. I'm 1 year strong and trying to stay committed.

Thanks for leaving such an honest comment!!! Hang in there and give it a little more time to see if will work for you. I'm all about trying to save people money so I plan on trying out cheaper products to see if they work on my hair, so that people on a budget can afford them. Thanks for watching the video and please subscribe!

Sariah you don't have to use all natural products. I've learned the most important product is a good conditioner so I splurge on that. if I can't afford it then mix some oils (castor, honey, and olive are my favs) with cheap conditioner and that's just as good.

Try Taliah Waajid products they’re between 7.99 and 9.99. Her products are natural and great for the hair. I used to purchase Shea Moisture but it’s too costly. Taliah Waajid works just as good, if not better!

THANK YOU!!! I agree with everything that you said.. Couldn't have said it better!!! I am a natural and I experienced everything that you talked about... It's been almost 2 years and I'm STILL learning how to deal with my hair and what works and what doesn't work...although it has gotten better it's still challenging at times and I must say that the KZbin videos give lots and lots of great information but at times my expectations end up in disappointment just like you brought out in your video...Thanks for keepin it real!

You are on point about avoiding heat. My hair had grown so pretty and long. I did not use heat for over 2 years. I flat-ironed it and loved the look. I decided to get a Dominican Blow Out and my hair immediately began to come out. I had to get my hair cut really short and start over again. I found out that chemical damage could be repaired, but severe heat damage could not.

Not only do I have the same tightly coily/kinky hair as you, but I really appreciate this video and wish I had this info when I started 4 yrs ago. You described my experience to the tee ... knots, tangles, silky and shiny when straight and having no idea what my hair was going to look like. Thx for sharing!

Thank you SO much for this video. I have a very, very short natural style - was thinking about growing, then coloring. Now I know better. One of the main reasons I cut my hair down to the waves was time and effort - I wanted a quick, simple routine. It takes me 5 min to shampoo, moisturize and brush. It may not look glamorous but it is clean, neat and drama free. Your thoughtful video is much appreciated!

Thank you so much and I hope it helped. I tell people all the time, don't focus on what your hair looks like, as long as it's healthy.

i definitely understand. when my hair was straight i had a hairstylist and after my big chop i did absolutely nothing to my hair for a year besides maybe wash and condition every 6ish-8 weeks. no styling, protective or otherwise, no moisturizing (ok maybe once a week by ' mistake ' so i could kinda comb it, no DC, i mean absolutely nothing. I'm officially entering year #2 and I'm just now learning about the health of my hair.

Thank you for keepin it 100% you said all the number one facts. You had my laughing so hard because you hit the key points. WashNGo is not a wash and go...lol. I love your channel! ❤️💕 I've been natural most of my adult life but my hair was never healthy because I didn't know to have consistent routine and deep condition. Your amazing! I was so surprised to see your hair curly. It's beautiful!!😍 I agree, your straight hair and curly hair is night and day. They are both very beautiful and different from one another. 🌻🌺💕 thank you for sharing! Can you make a video sharing your favorite products for curly hair, you wash day routine and how you detangle your hair?

Thanks for leaving a comment and sharing. I have a video up regarding my natural hair regimen which covers curly hair products. I haven't posted a detangle video yet, but I think I . may hit on it in my Curly to Straight hair video!
