That was the same shit they said when jheri curls were pop!ular back in the 80's. We were supposed to lightly use a small pick. Spray curl activator and put a bag on. My hair turned into a nappy, wet dripping ball, straight out of Coming to America, finally I sat down and completely combed out my hair. Needless to say, the world did not end. Next I ditched the bag, the world did not end. Finally, I used activator when I needed it, the world did not end. Next thing I knew I couldn't convince anyone it was a jheri curl. People swore I had a white daddy who gave me 3b hair lol!!!!

I use a comb and a brush, I don't pre-poo or co-wash, I love shampoo, I don't moisturize daily, and I use hair grease to lightly oil my scalp too. Nobody has to deal with this thick, kinky coily, low-porosity hair but me...so I do what works for me. Also, hair grease is the best sealant I've ever used.

I have basically said whatever on what all the so-called hair gurus have advised us not to do. I am going back to how my mom maintained my hair. That means I will be using shampoos with sulfates, hair grease, and sleeping with a scarf. My hair has always been long (waist length). I agree do what works for you.

These "break the rules" videos always amuse me, because I don't understand why in the first place anyone would think they *have to* do anything just because someone in a KZbin video recommended it. I *always* do whatever works for my hair, so I never needed to rebel, or whatever.

ananse77 Yes, I though the same thing. It would be so dumb and mainstream if everybody would do the same things that most naturals are doing like wtf. The most don't even works for their hair. There ain't no rules, just do what works for your hair.

Jaja.. If I hear one more person saying they don't use a comb! I will never understand how some people can do without combing their hair. I need to comb it. Period. I don't use my bonnet every single night either. Some nights it's just too hot to wear anything, let alone a bonnet. I do put oils on my scalp because my scalp is too dry as it is. And finally, I moisturize every couple of days. It has worked for me so. Take home message, do what works for you. But to know if it works for you, you have to try it first.

I moisture with Palmers Raw Shea Butter which is a thick grease I love it. Natural hair community can go somewhere with all that don't comb don't grease your hair b.s.. Girl if I told my momma that not to grease my scalp growing up she would have popped me with a comb and told me sit my behind down you black.

I can’t co-wash. I just can’t. My scalp needs throughly cleaned after a week of products. It feels so refreshing when my hair is clean. Now I have to admit, the gurus helped me. What I did take from them is weekly hot oil treatments, deep conditioning, and incorporating Ayurveda into my regimen. But co-wash always been a no no for me. It sound ridiculous.

I so agree! When I was a child I had hair down my back and my mother didn't follow no natural hair rules. She used grease, a comb, and a brush and when I was old enough to wash my own hair my mother made me use bar soap to wash my hair and my hair was thick and long. Hmmmm maybe I need to revisit those things 😂

LOL! I love your video, but I have to disagree with the bonnet and man situation. My husband asks me why do I not have my bonnet on when I am clearly trying to be lazy about life! He then proceeds to go and get my bonnet for me so I can put it on. He does not want anything to happen to my hair. I mean the man cringes when I say I am going to get a trim! LOL! Well, that is love.

No bonnet, no scalp greasing, or pre-poo & my comb is a staple. I've been natural for 14 years and never followed any rules. My routine is simple and includes just a few products. My natural journey is about simplicity and healthy hair. There are no rules! Do what works for your lifestyle and hair.

Thank you for setting us free! LOL You give a "real-life" perspective on natural hair. The reason I had to stop watching natural hair videos was b/c there were way too many rules! OMG I am married w/4 kids, I work full time, I write, I am trying to be an entrepreneur - I DON'T HAVE TIME to follow all these %$## hair rules! (Especially when the "rules" keep changing) I totally agree w/you about the bonnet/satin pillowcase and I think it's just important for everyone to do what works with THEIR hair.

I have always used a comb because ain't nobody got time to finger detangle only. I use my comb first and then pass my fingers through the section to make sure there are no knots. If I find a knot I use my comb again. I just discovered your channel and I absolutely love you. I stopped watching KZbin videos for a while because it was too much for me. I was never a product junkie because my mother couldn't afford to constantly buy so many products for me and I am honestly grateful, because I only bought essentials and my hair constantly grows. The most important thing in my natural hair journey is making sure my hair is moisturized, nothing else.
@cookiewookie4509

I broke every last one of these rules. Finger detangling doesn't detangle my hair at all, my hair just goes back into a big knot. I can only use oils on my hair and the tips of my hair, but it makes my scalp extremely itchy, to the point where it's unbearable, so I went back to using Grease. I don't sleep with a bonnet and I don't have a satin silk pillowcase either, but my hair still grows. And I think what a lot of people underestimate is the actual technique of taking care of the hair. if you really know what you're doing you wouldn't need a lot of these extra steps and rules that a lot of people have put in place in the natural hair community. Two of my friends hair is down to there butt and all they use is shampoo, conditioner, grease( sometimes oil) and water.

I feel like my hair grows faster when I just leave it alone and let it do what it do. So I just wash, condition or deep condition, detangle and moisturize, and let it air dry and then put it into a ponytail later on. Every three days I just spritz some water on it and style. Easy as pie. Low manipulation, faster hair growth.

my mom used blue magic faithfully on me and my sisters hair. It was either the coconut blue magic or the blue one and our hair grew tremendously while being very healthy as well. People need to shut up with all the bs because going back to the early stages of what our parents used is always a go to when our hair is acting up. I moisturize my scalp every two days or every other day of the week if I feel my scalp is dry and itchy and needs the attention only. That's when I moisturize at night. Listen to your hair people! Your hair knows what it's doing. Leave your hair alone. All the manipulation Is a down fall when growing and keeping healthy hair.

When I started out in 2009 after high school, You tube had me soo into natural only products, finger comb, no grease, no heat, twist outs, overnight conditioning, air dry, glycerin-avocado-shea packs ugh the list goes on. Being in college and other life changes I just didn't have time for the extra and my hair wasn't really growing. I cut it to even it out and started keeping it real simple. I wash when I feel my hair needs cleansing, deep condition each time with heat since I don't wash it frequently. Detangle with a small paddle brush. Moisturize when my hair feels dry. And generally just leave it be until I'm feeling a style coming on. I feel that a lot of the naturals over complicate things. I mean if you want wash day to literally take all day thats your biz. But start to finish I'm taking 2 hrs max and my hair has never been this long in my adult life. So I'm content 😉😉 gotta do what works for your hair.

Can I say something in my British apologetic way. I think natural hair movement meant well when it started out. Remember like a lot of new things, the black natural hair movement, it didn't know any better. You sound to me quite a bright cookie in terms of working things out on your own.But unfortunately there are still people today who are complaining that their hair isn't growing or not fast enough and what products can I use etc. People don't want to spend the time when it could be down to their diet, any possible medical condition like undiagnosed anaemia, allergies etc. For me the joker in the pack was coconut oil and too much protein in my regimen.

There's so many "rules" that don't make sense to me. I just cherry-pick through what is useful. I use a comb and a brush (boar-bristle and Denman). I also use silicone-based and petroleum-based products sometimes. And I don't deep condition every time I wash my hair. As stated earlier, it just depends on what works for you.

I don't follow everything youtubers say. I moisturize every 4 or 5 days. I kept hearing use light products on low porosity fine hair but my hair is fine and butters work best for my hair to stay moisturized for days. I also trim twice a year now. All that trimming every 3 to 4 months wasn't working for me. I just basically been listening to my hair and reading ingredients on labels to see what works best for my hair. But I love this video. It really helped me.

I hardly ever deep condition always have used leave in condition. I've done this for years never had a problem. Alot of these ladies lie you know what works best for your hair. It's pretty simple to grow your hair long 1: be patient 2: moisturize 3: stay away from heat like it's the devil 4 learn how to do your on hair and keep people out your head. 5: drink water and clean up your diet. All these will help your hair grow.

🙌🏽 I've NEVER pre-pooed. I do shampoo instead of cowash. I never wear a satin bonnet with my wash and go. I do, however, sleep on a stain pillowcase. And, although I do start with finger detangling, I STILL end up using a wide tooth shower comb to really detangle (and it's much faster and less painful for me). I don't moisturized daily. I don't use grease, but occasionally I do use oils. I've never had a problem with my hair growing (that's the back of my hair in my profile pic). When it's blowed out it's almost waist length in the back. The only thing I absolutely adhere to is regular trims! Bottom line: hair growth is determined by healthy hair and genetics. Everyone's hair is different - do what works for YOU!

I like you for keeping it real. I went natural long before I knew it was a social media/youtube phenomenon. I knew my hair was dry because my hairdresser use to say it a long time ago when I use to process it. When I went natural, it didn't get washed as often as it use to, because it took me a whole day. When I did wash I combed out quite a bit, especially as I didn't finger detangle & I combed it dry, but it was still growing. I'm trying to do better & I'm following some of the advice from natural hair sites & videos, but not everything. It would be way too expensive to buy so much product, but I'm trying out a local Jamaican brand as well as making some easy DIY products, like flax seed gel, etc. I tried a coconut pre-poo recently, but the first time I saw a product labeled as such I was like, "What, haven't we been washing our hair all along without this extra step? If the pre-poo will help me detangle, fine, if not, I'll skip it, but I'm experimenting with some of the steps to see what works. Sometimes I'll do something different on one half of my hair just to see if there is any difference. After washing & conditioning, I usually twist & usually have it twisted for a while. I'm trying to untwist more often & then maybe re-twist if I can. I try to moisturize whether twisted or not, but it's still very time consuming. I've been getting compliments on my hair for years, especially when I wear it un-twisted, but I'm making an effort to not loose as much when I wash & to add moisture by deep conditioning, & when styling. I only discovered your videos this morning & I've watched a few so far. I haven't seen many of those crazy videos that you spoke about but thanks for the info. I'll stay tuned!

Yes, Yes, and YES! If this ain’t the whole truth and nothing but the Truth! I heard about the grease clogging pores talk before. I stopped greasing my scalp for years and now I have alopecia, working on reversing my hair and scalp back to normal. I will happily start using grease again and I know exactly what brand I will use, because it helped reverse my alopecia before. I always tell people use what works for them, not for other people. You spoke a lot of truth in this video and I really appreciate you putting it out there.

I see from the comments these men out here really caring about a bonnet! lol. My husband said what's on my head ain't got nothing to do with...He's growing his hair out now so we BOTH come to bed with covered hair.

What The Kink Right?!! My man does not care. He still be trying to get it in even if I have a bonnet on. 😩😒😂 Also when we cudding he hates when my hair is in his face and oil gets on him. So he will tell me , "Babe put your scarf on, your hair products are getting on me..." 😂😂 Not every man is bothered by bonnets.

What The Kink i was just looking for a comment about this. i have a man and wear a bonnet or tie it up with a scarf every night and sometimes it stays on throughout the day if I'm not leaving the house. it doesnt bother him at all.

Mine: 1) I use pure mineral oil and my hair loves it. I don't use coconut oil (my hair laughs at it) or stinky JBCO. 2) I don't use conditioners. I only prepoo with mineral oil. 3) I leave my edges alone. 4) I only use curl activator gel for mega moisture for my extremely dry hair and it lasts me at least 7-10 days before I even have to think of moisturizing again. 3 years since my last shave and my 4c hair is now past BSL.

Queen Kaydeen my sister does. I prefer World of Curls activator for extra dry hair but some people find it too rich. Ultimately, I will use whichever one is available that doesn't contain aloe vera because those ones leave flakes and I'm very heavy handed when I apply so I can't have that.

I'm so thankful for your channel, I watched one of your videos yesterday about natural hair gurus, and I'm happy you're actually going against the trend because I no longer follow these rules ! Let's be outlawz on this journey haha ! Even if I no longer really watch hair channel and am more likely to follow a natural hair vlogger with short kinky hair like mine, I think you "deserve" to be followed lol ! New subbie here =)

I've been natural all 20 years of my life. I would usually wrap my hair up every night, now I do it less. I've never moisturized every day, honestly I don't how that's possible unless your hair just dries the way you like it. If my hair gets a taste of moisture then dries, I can expect to take up an extra one foot radius because my hair will get so big. I moisturized and twisted out my hair every other day (twist at night take it out the next morning) one year smh, I lost 3 inches and didn't even realize it because it was so gradual until I straightened my hair 4 months later and saw I couldn't even do my favorite hairstyle anymore. I'm still mad about it. I use heat in my hair, yep. I went back to it because I got so used to only taking care of it straight in high school that I forgot how to take care of it natural, so my hair would only grow when it was straight, but now I have a handle on it. Coconut oil hates me and it took me too long to realize it, my hair would break off twice as bad with the twist outs, but my hair could marry avocado oil. I am just now hearing what exactly a prepoo is. I don't cowash ever. I'll use sulfate shampoo if it's been a while, if I didn't like the scents of the sulfate free ones in the store that day, or I just don't feel like walking to my closet to get the sulfate free one, I deep condition anyway. I'm almost back to bra strap length since I stopped doing everything youtube told me to do. So I've learned my lesson, I take everything they say with a grain of salt.

1. I do not pre poo... 2. Wash/condition L.O.C. once a week. 3. No bonnet. Have one. Forget to use it. Got a man, he don't need to see that. 4. My protective style is 2 basic corn rows....no hair added ( in the winter); wash & go in the summer. 5. Ain't nobody got time for all those rules. I breaks them often, and I have a head full of hair. I comb and brush... not daily (cause I sport corn rows). My natural journey works because it is much easier than my relaxed life. If it was more work, I would've stayed relaxed.

Its crazy how different our hair can be. Looking at your hair it seems we have a similar texture, however, I hate using a comb on my hair and actually haven't used one in years. Finger detangling works wonders for me and is the quickest way for me to detangle my hair.

Wow! yes!! finger detangling-I think it's cool if you don't mind actually having knotty hair low-key. It was cool when I never rocked a semi-stretched out style (was doing straight twist outs from wet hair for years). But the moment I wanted that soft blown out (Maryam Hampton style), beach waves look ya girl was done, hit up sallys and walmart for ye old comb ya feel me haha! got me crying over here it's so real :)

Yassss for the greasing your scalp. I had that same experience as transitioning to natural hair my hair was going through, and I couldn't figure out what was going on, as I begin to narrow down what had change in my hair routine, bam I stopped using grease. I added it back to my regimen and mt hair is back on track. i also use olive oil, my hair loves it, but as you said you must learn what works for your hair. Thanks for the vid. I'm A new subbie. Your hair is goregous!!!!!!!

Thanks for this video. After watching so many videos you tend to forget what works for you. At one point my hair was thick and growing. Now it's thin and not growing well. I'm gonna do my best not to let all these videos influence me. I will do what works for me and my hair. I can't lie it's hard though. I've become a product junky.

Your hair is just like how mine was 4 years ago before I decided to relax it (it pretty much broke off. I could get away with being lazy with my natural hair, but not my relaxed). Now I'm going natural a second time and know my hair better than anything and I'm going to enjoy this big chop because I'm not going to be spending as much hours on my hair. That's why I relaxed it, I felt like it was taking over my life and there were so many "rules" to follow. I never used to put oil on my scalp and my roots would be so dry and the rest of my hair shiny. Now I put oil on my scalp every day and it's so much better. You got to know what's best for your hair. Great video thank you!

Natural oils on the scalp are fine and needed. Natural oils, coconut, olive, jojoba, emu, etc. get absorbed. Mineral oil, petrolatums, etc. just sit on your scalp and hair and don't actually nourish it. I am on my second time around going natural, 8 months in, and I learned a lot the first time around. The 1st time from a relaxer and now from a Wave Nouveau which is a whole other kind of challenge but this time I retained my length. My 2 cents, moisture, moisture, moisture, don't go a long time without cleansing and deep condition, every time.

I'm trying to find an oil that I can oil my scalp with just to prevent dry areas and flakes. Is Jojoba oil a good oil to apply on the scalp throughout the week? Also can it be used as a sealant?
