I'm not a Chevy guy but I worked on a lot of these trucks back in the day. They were comfortable, dependable, handle decent for a truck, and the heat would drive you right out of them. All around a good truck. People didn't care for the look of them at first but after a while they grew on people. It was just a big change from the square bodies.

DONT FORGET THE BAD GROUND THAT HAPPENS BEHIND THE JUNCTION BLOCK ON THE FIREWALL CAUSING THAT INTERMITTENT RUNNING LIKE CRAP THAT PEOPLE NEVER FIGURE OUT AND END UP CONVERTING IT TO CARBURETOR. Theres also the electrical issues with the guage clusters, the tiny front differential and 10-bolt rear differentials (same as 6cyl camaro) being super weak, the starters breaking the starter mount part off the block, the Vortec spider injectors, the 700r4 and 4L60e transmissions not being up to task, the stock engines not being designed for torque right off of idle which you need for a 4x4 minimally,... i can keep going.

My first year OBS 88 GMC 6 lug K2500 EXT CAB LONG BED has a 92 Tahoe 4x4 350 in it and a 4 speed Bulldog trans that came out of a 80 something square body has a 14 bolt rear-end and don't ask how but I sure ain't complaining gets 24 mpg. Plenty of power and it's my work truck firewood and I have no complaints except gauges. My other one is a 89 GMC K3500 EXT CAB LONG BED SINGLE WHEEL HAS A FACTORY 454 FACTORY 4 SPEED BULLDOG and its a hoss and I haven't got into rears yet but I'm pretty sure it's a14 bolt rear but I'm getting all the bugs out of it. I just got it bout 4 months ago and it has a lot of bugs but I'm knocking them bugs out little by little. Same thing like you said gauges and wires on both but I've got that done on both. You ain't joking bout the ground wires and the one behind at firewall most people don't even know bout it but mine willbe changed even though it's good.
@jeremiahfiek5495
@jeremiahfiek5495 14 күн бұрын
@@Tommy-rr7ez sounds like yours are plenty stout. The 24mpg is likely because of low gearing like 4:11s or something. The low gears + a torqey engine + 4 (or more) speed trans + driving it easy is where the mpgs are at... because the engine barely has to work to accelerate or maintain speed. Most people think a weak gutless small size engine and steep ass gears will get MPGs but all your efficiency is gone the second the engine is lugged down. My girlfriend's 2019 tahoe which even has the 4cyl cutoff BS only gets 16mpg... because the 5.3 engine doesnt produce shit for torque before ~3000rpm, but normal driving is 1000rpm - 2500rpm & THE GEARS ARE WAY TOO STEEP AND THE 4CYLINDER MODE DOSANT HAVE ENOUGH TORQUE TO PUSH THAT HEAVY TRUCK. Ps- most of what i said in my 1st comment was aimed at C/K1500 trucks. I personally only drive 1-ton trucks. Mine is a 1997 F350 4x4 single cab/longbed 5.8L/5-Speed manual transmission. Im rebuilding the engine to a 408w build for low/mid RPM torque and im regearing the axles to 4:10's or 4:30's for GAS MILEAGE and all around pulling/working power.

@@jeremiahfiek5495 I say your exactly right and I never thought bout it like that thanks! I know I've got to becareful cause the first time I got it on the interstate I looked down and speedometer goes to 80 plus a 5mph line past 80 a total of 85 and I went a hair past the line so I figured round 87 mph and i was shocked cause i figured it would red line way before that and it was quite and I still had half a petal and I said there is no way so I slowed down to 73 and kept cruising and looked back down and I was doing 84 flying by everybody. This old truck was a full time farm truck all its life til I got it and the farmer wanted to buy it back. It's the best all round truck I've ever owned and wouldn't be scared to go cross country in it. I've had a lot of old trucks and nothing wrong with older ford's! But i wouldn't have a newer truck! I've had it 4 maybe 5 months and i have drove it a 1 1/2 miles and im bout to have a fit to drive it. When I bought it I was told it needed a new fuel pump and slave cylinder needed bled. Slave cylinder was good but fuel pump is the nicest thing that was wrong. Motor is good and trans is good but everything else is wore out. Just watch your front end close! I know many where wheels just fell on ground and I was with a buddy of mine and he swapped motors and we pulled our and both front wheels laid flat on the road. Had a 94 extended cab got over 300,000 miles on it and the original 5.7 still didn't use oil and purrred like a kitten. The rust demons got to the frame and body so I had to let it go. :( There is one problem I had and it's with the light duty 1/2 ton 5 speed transmission. Went through 3 of them ,2 used and the last one brand new. Even the Chev dealer said that they were a problem and junk. Only flaw in the entire truck and even then they meve rleft me stuck just gears wouldn't work so I had to start in 2nd and than to 4th if I remember right.

@@GlassWerx Don’t forget to get new or at least decent-condition door weatherstripping as well; I replaced my door bushings for my 1998 Suburban with the cunningham machine bushings and my doors still rattled, but they at least didn’t sag anymore. I even checked the door latches and striker bolts, but they weren’t the problem on mine. The bushings are true quality because most cheap bushings would’ve gave out from months of rattling, but these ones are still in perfect shape. I don't agree with the statement the TBI engines have no power, that's kinda foolish, is it a vortech gen 1 sbc? Absolutely not but a TBI 350 actually bugs right along nicely, way better than a stock smogger Qjet 350 in a square body. My 88 c1500 Silverado reg cab with the TBI 350 700r4 and factory 3.42s was my uncles new and mine eventually and it would do pretty solid smokers and would haul right along nicely, only mod was a crane compucam and dual exhaust I did for him back when it was only a couple years old. but to be honest I never noticed any gain from those with the stock tune. Fastest thing around not by a long shot but for a bone stock pickup it was pretty healthy. In this day n age of 600 wheel being effortless yeah 210hp seems slack but HP wasn't where the TBI engines shined it's the low rpm TQ, those restrictive swirl port heads make serious grunt off idle to 3500. Maybe being 50 and growing up in 70s 80s 90s with some super slow cars it doesn't take much to make me think hmm not bad but I've experienced and owned way faster vehicles so it's not like I dont know what fast is. In my opinion for what it's worth which is nothing is gmt400 trucks are the last beefy built old school pickup. Gmt 800s awesome engines ok trans and axles other than that a terrible truck they have light duty components and the worst steel available when they were manufactured, I never seen such rust prone domestic truck they are everywhere here in Maine rotted in half or stress cracked. my 92 c1500 has solid frame and typical body rust can corners rockers and wheel arch rust, the brakes are way beefier than a gmt800 1500 4wd... What's that say, it's pretty sad? 400s are way more refined than squarebodys but depending on intended use are better or not, like lifting, the squarebodys solid axl is better suited and way cheaper to lift with less problems. The only inherit problem with 400s is rust and if the frame is solid but the body is ok but has its tender spots like any vehicle if someone doesn't mind getting their hand dirty and nicked up it's salvageable, floors, rockers and quarters and other patch panels are dirt cheap and easy to replace. Replacement drivetrain is all easily acquirable and cheap, simple and to strait forward to replace. The 700 is a weak link but stock power levels and maintenance will give you years of service, the 250k mile 700 in my truck was behind a 4.3, I pulled it when I did a v8 swap but sitting in a basement for 15 years later I had to toss it back in as a temp when my built 700 let go and it still works fine but it can't hold a mild 350hp 350 but why should it. As far as I'm concerned the 400s have no Achilles heels, any issues are all caused by age and wear and they can be kept on the road indefinitely if you want too bother. And last but not least they are a really handsome muscular looking truck, a true classic.

You say you disagree with my no power statement then say in this long ass comment that compared to todays engines they had no power but could get the job. Thats is pretty much what i said. That called an opinion homie. The LS swap makes it an entirely different truck. Can get well over 20 mpg, and never have to worry about TBI or spider injectors messing up. Plus you'll already be making over 100-400 more N/A hp depending on how rowdy you wanna make your daily. The transmissions like the 4l80es are better too or a T56 will go in and likely last longer than any stock 700r4 or early 4l60e. There is literally no downside other than folks saying they prefer an older engine. Big whoop, they can buy their own. I own a few of these including a 454 c3500 srw and it's an absolute POS. My 5.3 2002 1500 drives better and likely tows better. If the BB ever blows ill give it one chance and make it a 496 and if it blows its getting a 454LSX with a blower.
