Not sure if this will be seen but I ordered some blurays from Indicator during their March sale; first time doing so. Wholly looking forward to seeing their material. Now it’s 3 weeks later and still no despatch notification. 😢 They said they have the order and it’s “fine”. Could anyone with experience let me know if this is normal for them?

If anything they go too cheap! I always wait for the sales because of it. Just last week I wanted to buy some releases but held out knowing there would be a sale eventually. I probably would've bought them at rrp otherwise. It does make me respect them as a label a whole lot more though, so maybe the sales are good for them in that department.

Couldn't agree more. Criterion have easily placed themselves as my least favourite boutique label, purely because of their pricing. I've never bought a Criterion release outside of a sale and the lack of sales in the first place has caused my collection to consist predominantly of Arrow, Second Sight, Indicator and Eureka releases. There are so many titles I would like to pick up but even back when the UK sales were considerable discounts, they still cost far more than other labels at rrp. Criterion have been way off with their pricing the entire time. Instead of fixing that, they've made it even worse. For any non-special edition blu-rays, anything over the £10 mark is already a big premium. Criterion double that, which is just insane. With other labels, you at least get fancy packaging for that price point

Criterion are seriously beginning to slip behind the other boutique labels when you look at what they offer in terms of packaging, extras and yes even encodes, and then for that they charge for their release compared to what Arrow etc charge for their gorgeous LE releases. Coasting off their name and reputation only now.

I'm not exaggerating when i say i have checked the HMV website every day for the last year waiting for a criterion sale so i was bitterly disappointed by this. They used to include everything in the sale, now its just a handful of films with pretty poor discounts. I'm genuinely really angry about it. I held off buying any new criterions until a sale and now if this is the state of the UK sales i may never buy a first hand criterion again.
@lilybaggins140
@lilybaggins140 Ай бұрын
I feel your anger... This is exactly what I thought when, after checking HMV over and over for months, I saw the title 'range' (if it can even be called a range) and 'discounted' prices (if they can even be called discounted) of this Criterion 'sale'... As a an EU person staying in the UK, I was so happy to finally have access to some Criterion titles as they would be more affordable, but the disillusionment and frustration are through the roof. Criterion really could not care less about the UK market, which is such a shame... Some other UK physical media labels are doing fantastic work at making their titles more affordable from time to time, so these will get my little bit of money instead! Have a good day ✨

Now imagine what it's like to someone like me who has to to pay extra import customs and whose currency is weak... I remember back when I was like 16 or 17 I could easily afford to buy plenty of Criterions each month - they were like 17 pounds, which converted to around 170 of local currency. Also you didn't need to pay customs for small orders like a blu-ray or two. Nowadays, 17 pounds converts to around 230 of local currency... 230 would be like 22 pounds back then! AND I have to pay 25% customs on everything now... AND the shipping has gone up and included in the customs. So since a Criterion will be about 25-30 pounds nowadays as compared to 17-20 back then, + the added customs one average Criterion will cost me around 415!!! This is more than twice of what I paid for a Criterion 5-8 years ago. From 170 of a local currency to 415. And that's excluded shipping. If the conversion rate was the same as back in 2016, and if the new customs laws didn't appear, I'd be paying around 260... which would still be a lot more than then, but not nearly as much as today.

Another problem surely, is that Criterion holding relatively high prices, means there is no real incentive to experiment with blind buys. This is where, particularly Indicator, wins hands down. I have a very large Indicator collection, both limited editions (mixed sale and regular prices) and many standard editions usually holding off till their sales. Full marks to Indicator from me. Few of my choices disappoint. Wish I could say the same for Criterion where I would suggest most buyers would be more restricted to buying only the ‘really, really want’ titles?

The difference between the pricing of some at £13.99 and others at £17.99 is the newer releases are more expensive, launching at £22.99 instead of £17.99. Its crazy but Criterion are pricing based on the fact they are better than everyone else. I am waiting for reductions like this and then also using the HMV 20% discount on top. Used it to get Thelma and Louise, Pinochio, In the mood for Love. I only buy Criterions when on sale, i am one of those!

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but, the Criterion Collection in the UK is very expensive for what it is, even starting at £18 feels rough. I've been waiting to pick up In The Mood For Love for years now, but cannot warrant £18 on a single release, especially on sale. As you say, they're not limited edition, there's no fomo market to abuse. The pricing pushes me away from exploring cinema I've not seen before. Looking at Arrow's sale's they drop significantly £9 with some at £5, Indicator have a wonderful sale where nearly everything is £5.

It was dark, had almost no contrast at all and I seriously wondered if something was wrong with either my player or my 4K flatscreen. Then I put on the BluRay disc and it’s GORGEOUS. Maybe I just ended up with a bad disc. But the price on the single BluRay was only a buck or so less expensive, so I’ll just set the Ultra HD aside and ignore it. Still a bummer, though

As you say, Criterion don't work on the FOMO principle. I live in Sweden and neither HMV nor Zavvi ship to Sweden anymore, and shipping and fees from Amazon are more expensive than what most titles are marked down. For the past 5 years I've been to the UK at least once a year except when the pandemic was at it's worst, and as I can rely on these releases being available at HMV or Fopp whenever next I go, I would just wait until my next time there and get it cheaper than sale price + shipping. Not that there is a lot of movies in the Criterion Collection worth 25-30 pounds anyway, even if there are loads of titles I would like to watch. I'll usually pick one or 2 up and call it this years Christmas gift for my father and then borrow them from him to watch, but even that is getting hard to validate.

People Forget - Criterion Movies are cheaper in the US - Criterion Movies are supposed to be exclusive - Licensing and import cost money - if Movies are too expensive for you, buy fewer Movies. Criterion Movies should'nt be compared to buying food in Tesco's. Movies should be something special - and that costs money - there will allways be someone who sell Movies cheaper - Like LEGO is also cheaper in Croatia. When i was a kid travelling was something special - my family could maybe afford a proper holiday every third year - so when you finally sat on that plane on the way to italy it was Magic - now you can get there for 35 punds - its not special its not Magic its not exclusive. ..stop whining.

Indeed there is only one title I don’t have in that entire sale selection, but to be fair I’m not their target as I’m a seasoned Criterion collector - the 2 disc versions which Eves Bayou is will cost more, the 4ks have dropped £5 so they are the same as a new 4k title, a big rush to buy a lot of those hard to shift titles was during lockdown year,and many sold back then during those sales. It would be nice to hear what Spirit Entertainment has to say about the sale and their strategy in general and how they select their 2 releases each month. It’s worth noting that the Barnes and Noble 50% sale prices are similar they don’t equate to £12.50 per title as they are $20 for a bluray plus their sales tax or $25 for a 4k

I've used Stackry for Criterion sales (Barnes & Noble + the Criterion site) for the past three years. They're a parcel forwarding company that give you somewhere (tax-free New Hampshire) to have your orders sent to, which they then send on to you in whichever country you're in (I'm UK). Postage per disc averages out at about £3 (but depends on which delivery company you use, e.g. DHL or UPS etc) if you're buying seven titles and keeping it under the customs limit of £135.

I generally refuse to pay their prices. I'm not a big boutique label buff, I just want to own some of my favourite films. I had a whole wish list ready and I've been refreshing HMV almost daily for two months now waiting for a sale to drop only to find that only two films on my wish list are reduced, both still ideally more than I'd like to spend. It's frustrating because many films are essentially tied to Criterion. Seeing other big labels regularly on sale for 40% the price of your average Criterion film really rubs me the wrong way. I was prepared to spend a lot of money on a large haul but if I don't see value in the individual items, I won't buy them out of principle.

You are absolutely right. 👍IMO Criterion is losing their touch on every front: Pricing, content (special features), and sale availability per title. And to be honest, there aren’t that many new criterion titles I’d even consider buying at “normal” prices. My orders at Indicator and Arrow are already on their way and the movies I would have chosen from Criterion aren’t even in their sale: the 4K disks of After Hours and One False Move. That doesn’t make sense from a business standpoint. Compared to other boutique labels they are not competitive enough anymore. They are in deep need of a reality check. But maybe that’s all part of a plan that I’m not able to see.

My theory is that because Criterion doesn’t do the FOMO limited editions, which generate a chunk of income for the other labels, they then can’t use that income to subsidise bigger savings in the sales.

It’s particularly jarring with the UK criterion sale when we see the regular 50% off Criterion in the US sales. Also, the selection seems really limited. I’ve got a few criterion on my list for pick up, most of which aren’t featured in this sale. If they had a bigger discount and bigger selection… I’d have spent. I’d have tried to have got as many from my list as I could. There are a couple of titles in this selection that I have been tempted to pick up. With this sale though, I doubt I’ll bother. It doesn’t feel a special enough sale, the prices feel more like price adjustments than ‘sale’

I’ve been boycotting Criterion for considerable time now due to their sheer disregard of the UK market. They threat us with so little respect, bordering disdain that they don’t deserve my money. I bought discs many years ago when prices were ‘reasonable’ but when they don’t allow the UK to have sales to the degree of the US I thought that was ridiculous, and as prices started to sky rocket I thought they’re simply screwing us, so I’ll screw you back and I’ll speak with my wallet, or should I say lack of wallet for this label. There’s no reason the UK should be treated so badly by this Criterion when like you say, if we got 50% off sales and prices were similar to the US, they would absolutely coin it in, and I’d start buying them again and by the bucket load in sales. Until then, I’ll continue to give my business to the other labels who treat us with more respect.

I wonder how much business Criterion does selling to UK buyers who import from the US? Is it worth them selling direct to the UK? I’ve been looking for the UK release of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, but it doesn’t seem to exist on Criterion here any more. Other titles are similarly unavailable. Have the Sony released discs gone OOP now? The recent Last Picture Show release here didn’t come with the Texasville sequel included, but the US version did. It feels as though Criterion would rather we imported discs. Are the rest of the world subsidising the US releases? There are lots of the US releases that I’d love, because there aren’t UK versions available, but they don’t seem to give them a UK release! Is that just my misfortune or is there some plan behind this? There is never an announcement of US releases that will be given a later UK disc. It’s not just the pricing that’s all over the place for we non-US customers.

I, m still gobsmacked that the complete " The Expanse" set has one - the series 4 - only playable in the US..the rest is for the UK - ....I just don't get it ....not wasting my money...

Criterion have never really cared for the U.K or world market, despite their tedious assertion that they are world cinema leaders. They make a lot of money off the grey market despite blocking anyone outside of North America for their sales. The distribution link with Sony and now Spirt seem to be off in terms of viability for U.K customers. I stopped buying them after Number 750.

They don't really block sales from their website. They accept UK credit cards and I've had contact with US Criterion staff saying this is because they don't want to make it impossible for foreign customers to buy stuff from them. You just have to direct the delivery to an American delivery forwarding service because they don't deliver to UK/foreign addresses. Of course, this costs money. But it's better than nothing.

@@olavbjortomt1596 It's not in keeping with a brand that has a world cinema output- the world not just being North America-and then enjoying the grey market sales. I'm not directing the delivery service to an American delivery service- that's just ludicrous. I stopped collecting Criterion at number 750- they have been eclipsed by other labels and they live in the dark ages as far as their business model is concerned. Their rights contracts are too parodical as well. It's exactly what you'd expect from a U.S label- insular and not inclusive. Others manage it such as Vinegar Syndrome- about time Criterion do the same. U.K labels have been allowing U.S customers to buy from the for years. The only thing they seem to moan about is that they don't like it when there's only a region B release and they don't like the ratings image. The U.S needs to understand that it's a big world out there- finally.

I don’t bother with Criterion UK at all anymore. I stopped purchasing any of their releases even when they were still with Sony and it has only got worse since Spirit stepped in. I much prefer to import from Criterion directly, B&N or Amazon US during their sales and have them consolidated and shipped across along with other orders. The selection in the UK is also abysmal and so many titles don’t even make it over here. A fairly recent example would be their release of Chabrol’s ‘La Ceremonie’ which got a great release stateside and nothing for the UK even though the old Artificial Eye BD has been long OOP and there has been no indication of a release from any other UK label.

The only ones of theirs I’ve got recently were Eve’s Bayou and After Hours 4K, but I generally just ignore them now. My shelves have far more Indicator, Arrow etc than they do Criterion. Radiance monthly announcements are way more exciting to me now, seeing as we’re lucky to get 3 of every new Criterion slate

Can you get the same 50% discounts using Amazon US? Also does Barnes and Noble ship to the UK now? I agree with your comment and will go stateside if I can make it work financially.

@@mrsbaylocksvideoemporium9621 Amazon US will price match a lot of the time sales are on but you need to order from Amazon US directly (not through Amazon US seller on Amazon UK) and have it shipped to a US address to fully benefit (same applies to other US retailers who don’t ship to UK like B&N). You can use a parcel forwarding service like Stackry which will hold your orders at a tax free US location then you can consolidate them and have them shipped to the UK for a reasonable fee. This method works particularly well during sale periods as they will hold all your orders from various retailers/labels which you can then consolidate together into 1 box and have shipped to a UK address.

Yeah, I imported La Ceremonie - probably my favourite French film of the 1990s - along with the Last Picture Show (because it had Texasville on it and the UK version doesn't) from the last Barnes & Noble sale

Well said, Elliot. It's about time Criterion/Spirit were openly roasted for their utterly abysmal pricing and availabilty here in the UK market. Frankly, they might as well just cancel their joke of a UK operation, because as so many others have stated in these comments, I too am not prepared to give them my business any more. Their presence in the market and their pricing "strategies" are frankly laughable when compared to superior labels like Indicator and Radiance. Even Arrow and Eureka have better prices, better sales and more respect for their marketplace. Au revoir, Criterion.

The sale pricing is very poor. I mean, a fiver off £30 when Indicator are hacking away at prices for their sale. I know where my money is going.

I think the Eclipse sale Criterion was having, i guess because of the eclipse? ...wasnt too great. The Eclipse series is still in the DVD format. Pretty sure NOBODY buys them anymore. Some of those movies might be available in blu-ray elsewhere but they are kinda just dated and pointless these days.
@nikomiller
@nikomiller Ай бұрын
hell, there are some Eclipse movies which Criterion themselves have released on Blu-Ray! Which is just dumb, that whole line should just get updated to blu-rays once all films in a collection have a good transfer available - and a lot of them do since Criterion has released them on blu-ray or they are in HD on the Channel
