‘“Waste your life, learn to speak a foreign language” By Anthony Browne (Monday, 23rd December 2002) We all know le problème: we are a nation of monoglots, linguistically challenged and so culturally inferior and economically constrained. Only one in four of us can claim to speak in foreign tongues, whereas our chic European chums babble away in a veritable Babel. European governments have lobbied, and the British Government has responded: from 2010 every primary school shall teach foreign. It’s a further good intention paving the road to ruin of our education system. We should shrug off our linguistic hang-ups, and instead of reinforcing language teaching, abolish it tout de suite. Ordering everyone to learn another language is as pointless as ordering everyone to dig holes and fill them up. The reward for our ancestors persuading the rest of the world to speak English is that there is no need for us to learn what the rest of the world speaks. All the time we spend learning another language, we should spend instead learning something useful - like economics, business studies, politics, law or computer science. If everyone in the country were forced to study economics as remorselessly as they are forced to learn French, then Britain would be in a far better state (true reform of the NHS would have happened decades ago). Learning another language may make you feel clever, but it is no longer necessary for speaking with the foreigners you’re most likely to want to speak to: the educated and those working in tourism. Ever regretted you didn’t spend years learning German because of problems communicating with German labourers? I thought not. I spent three hours a week for six years learning French, but it has proved a total waste of time. I have only needed it on a handful of occasions, and even then it was tourist French learnable in a couple of weeks. I have family friends in France, and have had many enjoyable conversations with our Gallic neighbours, but always in English. I have extended family in Norway and Denmark, but hardly speak either language because I never get the chance: all my Scandinavian relatives speak perfect English. In contrast to all our continental cousins, Britain is part of the Anglosphere, by far the most powerful linguistic bloc in the world: the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand - as well as countries such as South Africa and India where English is the language of business and politics. Three of the G7 countries are anglophone. Even outside the Anglosphere you can thrive with impunity as an English monoglot: you can work with no problems in the European Commission, the European Central Bank and countless multinational companies around the world. There is no obvious alternative language - French is only useful in a couple of developed countries and North Africa, and Spanish helps you on holiday in Cuba. Don’t get me wrong: I understand the smug satisfaction of mastering another tongue, but it is damaging to force it on the entire population. European children spend 15 per cent of their time learning foreign languages by the age of ten - imagine the advantages we would have if our kids did something more interesting in that time than learning how to ask for un café. The Government is swimming against the tide of history: as more people learn English, the more pointless it is for Britons to learn another language. There are fewer and fewer people in the world worth speaking to who don’t speak English. Already the number of people studying languages at A level in Britain is plummeting. The Government’s recent announcement that it is no longer compulsory to learn a foreign language up to GCSE is a welcome dose of reality. But it should go the whole hog, and stop forcing everyone to learn useless knowledge that they will never need, and hardly ever use.’ 『終』

People get really focused on politics in the government. The reason Thailand specifically is nice is that they took the best ideologies of ancient kingdoms of the Indian subcontinent--the leader is similar to a guru, and as you get away from core functions of the government, you're on your own in the world. Its not a superior system, and people should stop looking for utopia (utopia didn't exist on Earth, it is a futile pursuit, as all humans and all societies are inherently imperfect). But it absolutely has its merits for some types of people. One thing that drives me absolutely insane in Thailand is the amount of British specifically that are here and complain nonstop about Thailand not being a complex administrative State like back home.

There is a middle ground that could be achieved. I'm scottish but live in Finland. Here the system is very socialist but it's not "free" like the UK. We pay €30 every time we go for a doctor's apointment. It costs €45 (+ the €30 for the care in hospital) for an ambulance. Having people pay just a little for medical care could help a lot with funding the nhs, stop people from using it unnecessarily and it could help with waiting times. No one wants a system like the corrupt one in the US but there are so many other options...
@D.von.NАй бұрын
Re pubs decline in the UK: part of the problem is prices. Under Tories the economy struggled a lot, rich got richer, average folks have got deeper into their pockets. It is more economical to buy a set of beer cans to drink it at home (also thanks to internet we have much more fun at home than in pubs) than spending a little fortune in the pubs. Smoking is a small factor in all this. And there was a staff negatively affected, also serving the smoking customers, not having a choice really. Plus, if you are a non-smoker, just dedicating a room to smokers, when doors open often and the smoke sneaks in, it isn't pleasant either. We are much better without smoking.

Of the 10 pubs/bars in my home town in the UK, 6 of them had already introduced smoking bans in their beer gardens without government regulation. One of those is now up for sale. Non-smokers want to sit in a beer garden to enjoy their meal and a drink. But only when the sun shines and it's warm. That's about 10 weeks of the year in the UK. The other 42 weeks of the year, you'll only find smokers in the beer garden. An empty beer garden for 42 weeks of the year will tempt many pub owners to sell the land off for residential houses. The non-smokers who wanted to sit in the beer garden in the Summer will find the beer garden has disappeared.

Although politicians in the uk seem selfish, so much policy and culture is driven by second handedness and altruism, which morally requires the country to be run according to the lowest common denominator, the most needy. Therefore you end up with a society where everyone able must suffer on behalf of those unable to make good decisions for themselves as altruism requires sacrifice, it becomes a race to the bottom

However, you if people smoke I immediately get asthma so for years I could not go to a restaurant and outside it is the same. Banning smoking is the best thing ever as my liberty was very limited before. I am of the advice that you need regulations. However, in order to have fewer the population needs educating as there is a lack of discipline now in western culture. If people are incapable of looking after their health and causing the NHS a lot of expense in medicines and treatment then I can well understand any goverment trying to protect their health system with for example the sugar

And my third input before I take off: you put on pedestal the life in those Asian countries, but acknowledging that there is a corruption problem and you aren't allowed to criticise the government or monarchy. A few years back RuSSia was similar. People disinterested in politics, there was a sort of a social contract between the corrupt government and the population not to stick their noses into the politics, to mind their own businesses, put up with corruption and all was good. Until the corrupt authoritarian govt decided to make this catastrophic mistake and invade another sovereign country, seeing the sanctions pouring in. But even before that, Pootin was socially engineering the country and removing civic rights from people, little by little in small incremental steps, and now people get jailed for liking a post that is critical of government, a girl spat on an ad recruiting into the meat grinder and got arrested just being seen by a bar staff, without visual evidence. Father of a 12yo girl got arrested and jailed for her drawing a peace promoting picture at school, and girl was sent to a youth institution to be looked after. So for now you might enjoy a little freer life in those countries, but beware what can happen to anyone when they give up their political freedoms and only mind their own business. If you are not interested in politics, the politics will get interested in you - goes the slogan.

First time here and I had some preconceptions about what I was going to hear here, but mostly I am pleasantly surprised by your reasoning and eloquent talk. However, me being knowledgeable about public health, I cannot agree that it is wrong (i.e. nanny state) when the government wants to limit the amount of sugar or caffeine in products. Exactly for the reasons you outlined, that a large portion of the population is ignorant and literally thick, they will sleep walk into problems and it is the government's task to keep safe not only them, but also the rest of the society. Those morons who gulp down litres of sugary drinks and eat themselves to early disability, are putting strain on NHS and that costs the rest of us a lot more than just the bureaucracy you criticize. People wait for years for hip replacement, many with progressing cancer had multiple ops cancelled and then died as a result... because we have these ignorant morons who grow into incredible size and bariatric surgeries sky rocketed - to give you a picture. Regarding caffeine, teenagers as young as 11 are walking streets with Redbull in their hands. This caffeine is messing up with their developing brains, they have disturbed sleep, their intellectual and other abilities are suffering and they grow into instable and damaged individuals, that costs the entire society a lot of money further down the line. So this isn't about you and restricting you in your rights, it is about protecting the society on the whole. Prevention is better than cure. Each society has their own challenges and I am for many other restrictions for the better of all of us for the future. On the side note, I wonder what a woman would say about the life in places where you live. Men usually have it easier in most places on the globe.

Take the indoor smoking ban that came in in 2009 - absolutely a brilliant policy, reduced casual smoking, improved clubbing atmosphere. Think you need 'nudge' policies like that. Also if you just allow and greenlight anything and everything, it does have a negative effect particularly on the young and the vulnerable.
