I spent the night in UK's first capsule hostel, and I found it to be the cheapest overnight stay in central London. It is strategically and conveniently located along Borough High St close to the London Bridge Station, a short walking distance from the Borough Market, The Shard and Guys Hospital. This hostel is known as St Christopher's Village.
Hostels are communal places people stay while travelling, fitting several guests in each room with shared bathrooms. They're known for being affordable, but they aren't ideal for people who need their personal space.
That's why St Christopher's at the Village created capsules for guests who want their privacy to escape for some peace and quiet. It is the first hostel in the UK to offer capsules for their guests to sleep in. They introduced the capsule concept in 2018. The pods are available for £27.90 per night with bed and breakfast included, when booked directly with St Christopher's Village. Each capsule has mood lighting, curtains, plugs and USB sockets and a special ventilation system that keeps the pod cool.
The very first capsule hotel in the world, opened in Osaka, Japan in 1979 and was designed by Kisho Kurokawa. They were developed as a way for budget travelers to house somewhere safe and affordable to sleep. Over the years capsule hotels have remained popular but the experience of staying in one has dramatically changed, with pod hoteliers competing to provide guests with the most stylish and luxurious experience.
Many capsule hotels in Tokyo and elsewhere are only for men. Capsule hotels developed as cheap places for salarymen to stay in if they couldn't make it home overnight, so historically they've been pretty much just for men. Until recently, it was rare to find a capsule hostel that allowed women.
If you want to try out this innovative type of accommodation, book directly with St Christopher's Village on the provided link below. Don't forget to like, comment, share and subscribe.
