I can simplify it down even more! ... because the people themselves do not refer to it as THE Ukraine. Plus, slavic languages do not have a word for THE as there is no need for it. The end. We in America call our country THE untied states of America, other places also put The before their country's name. Ukraine does not, so we should not. Especially since using THE was mostly in reference to an area that was part of the USSR. It was to define the area, not to separate it from the republic.

It's THE Ukraine because Ukraine means "Borderlands", and proper words that end with "lands" are usually in front of the definite article.

there was one in Spain, but different kingdom. "The Galicia in Spain is from Latin *Callaecia, from a Celtic tribe called Καλλαϊκoί (Kallaikoi) by the Greeks. "Galicia" is just the late reduction of that word. The Galicia in Eastern Europe is the Latinized version of the Slavic word Halych, an ancient city on the Dniester river in western Ukraine."

I have different view. Is that your proudly claim of Ukraine mean so much? How about Brezhnev. Born in Russia Empire today Ukraine then became head of USSR. Who is he, Russian or Ukrainian? We have many multi-ethnic but united strong country. Then some UK guy put whisper of devil into their ear, "You are proud people you should stand-up." then they start killing each other, divide and conquer one by one. Today that is The Ukraine.
