Great video. Use the same filter. I have a couple different techniques: ramps for wheels (no jacking, no BMW required jack pads either), pre-oil the o-rings slightly for “sure” seal and reload the oil filter to decrease the amount of time engine is “dry” of oil during first start up after change. And I am sure you are aware, Castrol and Mobil 1 both make the euro spec oil for the N54 and it’s commonly avail at Wally World. Thx for vid!

Lee, Pelican Parts in their DIY oil change write up state that if you don't loosen the oil filter housing lid first, you will leave about 1 liter of old oil in there. So if this is true, you'd have 6.8 qts + 1 L in your engine at the moment.

Change filter before you put the plug back in.
@allmycarsisbroke

And wet the tiny o-ring with oil before installing it onto the bird cage piece, also wet the large o-ring with oil before reinstalling oil filter cap. Lastly, it's not a bad idea to wet the oil filter by soaking it briefly in the 6.8qts of clean oil you will add to the car, as well as pouring 1-2 quarts of your 6.8qts into the oil filter housing before installing the filter. Then pour the remaining ~5qts into the normal oil filler cap.

With this kind of engine, isn't it generally suggested that you take the oil filter housing cap off first? The car has a drain function that makes all the oil go to the bottom oil pan for easy draining.

I highly recommend a funnel... I spilled some oil and it leaked down to the coils/spark plugs. I noticed some stuttering and figured I should change the plugs and coils... saw oil on them and was like what the hell??? Asked a guy at the shop I was working at why I had oil on my plugs came and looked and said my valve cover gasket was leaking... spent hours to change it... and the gasket was in good condition. Changed it anyways since I had a new gasket and snapped a bolt on the cover being a dumbass and not following the torque specs... 10 nm or so I saw some say 8.5 but I think 10 wouldn't hurt. Now I have to special order a bolt and do it all over again... yay... all because I spilled a little oil around the fill cap.. so ya, use a funnel.

People here have asked about oil capacity. It's 6.8 qts. Also, you should always add a bit of oil to the filter reservoir which helps to prime. I simply use 7 qts and pour a small amount into the filter reservoir for priming purposes. Finally, the torque value for the oil pan bolt is 18.5Nm and the filter housing. 25.5Nm.

shouldn't you drain the oil when the engine oil is hot?

My oil filter cap separated from the cartridge O.O! I ended up making a video about that haha, make sure you don't throw it away on accident. There is actually a TSB for it.

Turbo engines run hotter, thus turns the oil black over time due to it being hotter than normal NA engines.

Terrible video. 1. The lines on the oil filter cap are just oem marks, nothing to do with it being completely closed or open, you do know your torque would be different depending on what position the cap was when it started threading, right? Im sure their is an OEM recommended foot pounds spec. 2. Lower the car on level ground to drain out all the oil 3. Dont add all your oil and assume it's correct, go about 1/2 quart under, measure on level ground, then correct. The car never looses 100% of its old oil in a change.
