Now I understand the potential value of this fancy green oil. Every time I take my Volkswagen into the stealership, they find some "small oil leak", and want to tack on an extra $1000 or more for "repairs". Strangely, I never have to add oil to my car in between oil changes, so with such a leaky engine, why is my dipstick still up to the max mark? I know, right? Elves are topping up my oil while I sleep. Today, the stealership quotes me over $5600, mostly due to parts that need replacing because they're causing "small oil leaks" and "labor charges" because they found so many apparent damn oil leaks. My garage floor is clean. My dipstick says max. The trade in value on my GTI is $4200 by the way, it has 50,000 miles on it and Volkswagen is saying it's rubbish. My dad was the original owner and he took meticulous care of it. I am so tempted to use Molygen in it this time and find these "small" leaks myself. It costs about $35. That question about the weights and how it “gets thicker” at high temp get me thinking. The oil definitely gets thinner at temp, anyone whose done an oil change could tell you this. So are the winter and operating temp weights based on a different viscosity scale? Throw 5w30 into the freezer which is well above the winter temp rating and the oil flows much slower then even room temp, and hot oil drained from the engine flows even better. Doesn’t make any sense how the weights work if both numbers are supposed to be linear on the viscosity scale
@jamesonnorth5 жыл бұрын
It's not that the oil gets thicker, but that the additives make the oil thinner when cold and to not thin it as much when hot. Similar to how adding salt to water increases the boiling point and also decreases the freezing point.
@afonsoferreira51715 жыл бұрын
It doesn't get thicker at higher temp, it just behaves like a thiner oil at low temp. So it has the viscosity of a 5w oil at cold T and the viscosity of a 40w at high. But high T viscosity is still lower than low T, you just get a lower variation in viscosity.

jmayor88 no it’s not! Europe has up to 10% ethanol just like the US. It’s not the Octane rating either. While Europe doesn’t have 87 Regular, European 95 RON is a 90 PON, and European 95 RON is a 93 PON. So not higher than American Plus and Premium. It’s the because sulfure, Europe has had a 10ppm limit for a long time now. The US is switching from 30ppm to 10ppm since 2017. This higher sulfur content has caused issues to many new generation European engine imported to the US, especially for BMW’s. But I doubt that you will see the long oil drain intervals because… money. Oil changes are profitable.

It would have been great to include a category about what to do if you track your car, most of the time people struggles to know if it's ok to race with a 5w30 on tunned cars... As states, 5w30 and oem specifications for oils are for OEM cars, once you get tunned, you can throw that to the bin. People racing in the seat leon cup racer cars use castrol 10w60, but not sure if that's ok for a car that is used in the street.

Based on what i am hearing is engine oil is thinner when its cold and thicker when its hot? That doesn't sound right. Regular petroleum oil when cold is thicker, oil when warn is thinner. Engine oil as additives in the oil to keep a CONSISTENT lubrication from the moment of the cold start - to the operating temperature of the motor. If the oil is to thin and it wont lubricate. You might as well run water. To think and the oil doesn't flow and there isn't enough lubrication. The first number on the bottle is describing the coldest temperature (check the bottle on the back it will tell you how cold the the oil is rated for before the oil gets to thick) at which the oil will flow without altering the viscosity to much (it dose get a little thicker when cold but it is with in the tolerances of the motor to be thinker, but not by much). the oil has to maintain that weight of the oil that is stated my the manufacture or it will start to wear the engine prematurely. But I could be wrong.
@skepticalshooter34996 жыл бұрын

You answered the question I wanted to know. I'm in Australia and my car a 1.4 TSI says 502 or 504. The price difference is double. Also very confusing because I'm on a 15000 km interval but they dealers use 504 long life for some reason, when they could just use 502 since you have to change the old more frequently anyway. Thanks guys. I'll give the 502 a go next time since I do my own oil changes now.

Mate, you have no way knowing what the stealership pours in your engine (motor); you and anybody else, should do this life -preserving service themselves, unless you drive a crap pos.

@@A.Dude. honda civic 2007 195000 km gasoline&lpg which 5w-40 oil. syntoil high tec 5-40 or leichtlauf high tec 5-40 which one?
@A.Dude.5 жыл бұрын
@@sahangartal9049 The best you can afford. "Leichtlauf" is a very low viscosity oil and it's 100% synthetic. Now, because your car has some mileage on it (I noticed, those are km... LOL), I would recommend a compression test; you can do it yourself with an inexpensive tool from HFT. It might as well be that the compression will "ask" for a higher viscosity and in this case I would avoid anything under W10 on the cold end. For the "warm end", you can go as high as you want or afford. In any case, using the best oil, will give you a longer engine life. Also don't cheap-out on filters; very important!!! I noticed that the genuine filters at the dealership are priced just the same, if not lower than the parts store charge... (I mean, I only have experience with MB and VW). Good luck!

I think Steffen’s info about US fuel standards was a bit out of date. In 2014, EPA mandated Tier 3 ultra low sulfur gasoline (10 ppm or less) starting in 2017. That puts the US in line with EU requirements, which should mean the VW 504.00 oil spec should be followed in both places. Not that there is anything wrong with 502 if the manufacturer approves it, but 504 should in theory mean better engine cleanliness and lower emissions.
@georgedaswani91556 жыл бұрын
If the EURO manufacturer specifications are the most stringent, then people should buy OIL that meets the spec, tested and are approved. The liqui-moly stuff sounds like expensive german snake oil just Amsoil. Given that Castrol Edge 0W40 A3/B4 meets (API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4, Meets Ford WSS-M2C937-A, BMW LL-01, Mercedes Benz 229.5 and 229.3, Porsche A40, VW 505 00 and 502 00) and Mobil 1 FS 0W40 meets pretty much the above except for BMW LL-01. Should'nt people be heading to their local Walmart instead and getting a 5 quart jug for less than 30$ instead of this expensive stuff? Noticed that some of these oils say they meet the manufacturer specs, yet aren't in the manufactures approval list (and should be avoided from a warranty perspective).

US cars would do better with high SAP oils due to less quality fuels, but in Europe we're told high SAPS screw with your catalyst converter, a very expensive part.

It still screws with catalytic converter in USA. Just use Shell 91 and add some redline sl-1 2-4 oz per fill up

Is it an all original BMW E46 M3? How long have you used Liqui(D) Moly... and did you switch from Castrol (TWS or did you use the new Castrol¨Supercar¨10w60... before switching ) -I have also read the classification and additives that Liqui Moly have now in the 10w60 and cant see any reason why not. And have read about several that have had used it but not heard back from a long time trial? So is it still all good? (Also just a bit more info I run a good premium 98¨premium gasstank every 4 times (or more:) and you will get very good result with using a bottle now and then from STP (now the injection trim in a red bottle as the ¨booster¨is not allowed in EU no? -But the all red STP-injection trim is good (it is recommended to use about 2-5000km but on an M# : -every 5-10 tank or so and it will be as still as it was born before it wakes-up;) (361HP+)

Hi! Can i use 5w-30 API CH-4 or higher (API) on Ranger T6? As the manual says, the oil "should" be 5w-30 ACEA A5/B5 when the diesel fuel sulfur content is 350 ppm (EURO 2). As of now the fuel here in Philippines is EURO 4.

My 2018 b48 in my 530eneeds 0 w 20 but it's basically not available in the LL BMW spec. in Canada. Only BMW has it i assume at the dealership for oil service. It's very expensive at the parts counter. All the parts stores do not have oil that meets BMW spec. Liqui Moli 6600, which meets the spec in a 0w20 is not available and the relevant oil at Rockauto is perennially out of stock. I found Pennzoil Euro L 5W30 with BMW LL 04 spec. Will the weight cause any issues, i assume that since it meets LL spec that i am good for the summer and will hope to find 0w20 for the winter, since i have a 530e and the oil will tend to be on the cold side during most winter driving. Any comments?
