Part 2 of second cut silage is buckraking, rolling and sealing the pit! This stage is so important to making good silage and minimising dry matter losses!

You could work with a front pushoff on the puma and compact reversing down

Would be an option but then to get the required tonnage rolling the pit when they're running flat out with 4 or more trailers. You would need a second tractor compactor and buck rake. Better to have the loader the rest of the year

Be interesting to see how the pit fairs out with a cover with an oxygen barrier built in vs two covers under one roof. We cover our walls and two covers on top. Would like to try out the cover with biult in oxygen barrier and silocompactor to see the benefits vs our usual way of doing it. Whats your thoughts on this Andrew? Great video as always, keep it up

Two covers are 100% better, wasnt sure at first but I'm sure now.

Is the orange side not supposed to be on the silage and the black side on top or does it not matter?

I think it doesn't matter, silostop claim it's orange side up.

After watching you last year I helped our neighbor with his clamp I did the buck raking and kept rolling he put more loads in the silo than ever and I still hadn’t gone above the walls normally his dad had it 3-4 feet above the wall over winter his silage was the best he’d made. I’ve got the clamping job again this year

Never seen a pit being covered, so really interesting. Would probably be more environmentally friendly to re-use the cover for more than a year, but in the scale of things, not going to save the planet just with that!!

Have you ever thought of using secure covers instead of tyres? I get very good results of using side sheets with a single black sheet on top with the secure covers then gravel bags around the outside. I have to open it again twice to put second and third cut on top so make it as easy as possible. It gets a double layer of big straw bales after third cut.

No spashing of horrible water from moving the tyres is worth a roof on its own. A hole in the cover will ruin a minimal amount of silage, compared to a missed hole that is rained on. Its more pleasant taking the covers off, no rain running down your neck. Great place for kids to play if there are a few busted small square bales to fall on to. I could go on :-)

Great video again Andrew 👏 Can you tell me why people use a tipping buckrake and not a push off buckrake? Flicking, tipping and travelling at the same time always looks like it's a power sapping affair not to mention wear on pins and bushes, a push off buckrake seems a far more efficient way when climbing a pit in my eyes and not so stressful on a machine. Just being curious, is it just farmers preference or are push offs very expensive? Cheers 🍻 👍
