Timestamps for this 3 hour SP (special) review: (Both on PC and Mobile users) 00:00 - Intro 02:16 - The Genius of Doom (1993) 36:25 - The Problems with Doom II 1:18:12 - The Insane Difficulty of Final Doom (TNT Evilution & Plutonia) 1:47:21 - The many expansions for Doom II (Master Levels, No Rest For The Living & Exclusive maps for Doom3 OG Xbox port) 2:16:54 - The Unofficially Released Doom Games (Perdition's Pay & Hell To Pay + The Lost Episodes of Doom) 2:39:03 - The Lasting Impact of Doom 64 (Last to tackle before ending the video) Additional thoughts: At the part (Doom 64) where FP said about The Terraformer map, I just "got there", meaning that I'm not alone. My backstory: Back in the late 2000's to early 2010's, in my home country (Philippines), I was one of the luckiest boys to obtain the American Nintendo 64 (that originally bought from my relatives, yes, my Filipino relatives in the US), and then tried playing that game (although take note that I played it under 18 years old - since that game is Rated M for Mature). At that time, I was neatly between 9 to 13 years of age). Yeah, I was just scared of the crushing ceiling but at the same time - really amazed (in good impressions) on how they'd worked in the game. And then, I just got a bit frustrated that eventually, turned off the system, and then I changed the game (e.g. Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Pokémon Puzzle League, Pokémon Snap, Star Wars Episode I: Racer, etc.), 'cause I just got sucked (being a "wuss", in other words). But yeah, as time passes, I fully acknowledged of my past mistakes, and then I got the point where I simply enjoyed, and having much more knowledge about the Doom maps structure/architecture on this day while it lasts (probably better this time). === End of backstory == Plus, recently, Doom 64: Retribution for PC (mod for Doom 2) is just stunning to play; how much modern times could possibly be. Another thing is, he (FP) missed to discuss the PSX (the PlayStation) version of Doom, whereas the ambience went there in the Doom 64 version (very big thanks to Aubrey Hodges' terrific masterpiece on making his music, for real) - although that was also the integrated part of Final Doom moments (plus OG Doom and Doom 2). Since then, Doom 64 is one of my favorite series so far, as I could imagine to be an aspiring "all-in-one" video game developer (not just programming, but also creating graphics, "test-play", making sound effects and so much more to deal with) in the future. By the way, very comprehensive and in-depth detail of this review so far, so good!

The aestethics of episodes I, II and III, are great example of storytelling through level design. Knee Deep in the Dead: You're in a space station in Mars, so lots of tech textures and computers, the demonic imagery only in secret areas. Shores of Hell: The demons are merging Hell into the station, one room you're in a facility, another you're stepping into a cave with lava, in the end we come to find the base is actually floating over Hell. Inferno: Finally you are in Hell itself, so there is no shying away from the demonic imagery, gore and all the temples and weird structures.

I 100 percent agree with your opening statement "that it is one of the best fps of all time!" This classic franchise is so good in fact that i haven't even played doom eternal yet and purchased it on day one and the reason........it came with doom 64, haha! i got so preoccupied with playing a classic loaded with a brand new episode in celebration of the new game coming out that i didnt even play the new game! the NINTENDO 64 system didnt do the classic justice and I hardly finished on that system. now ive played it all the way through on pc and adding it my favorite classic doom games of all time list! anyways, i love revisting these classics with you and I think its great to hear what you consider are some of their flaws, as they definitely have em, no matter how good they are (especially in level design consistency!) anyways, your videos are spot on and i think we all appreciate your take on this game!

He probably said that at the time to sell a few more DOOM 3 copies, the game was groundbreaking then, but hardly held up, just like both DOOM 2016 and Eternal won't hold up like the classics. He may be a good coder, but he also was quite unnedlesly ignorant at times. It's well known the development team behind DOOM for the Saturn created a tailor-made engine for the console, running smoothly at 60 FPS (though I doubt it kept this performance all the time), Carmack said 'no' due to a not-so-big thing with some warping textures, then they rushed what could easily be named Slide-Show DOOM. Not too long ago he said something like "in retrospect, I should have greenlit the custom engine they created for the Saturn", it's ridiculous to even think of the acceptance of horrid DOOM versions for the 3DO and Saturn as retail products, the SNES version is better than both, but this one was a miracle and wasn't even expected to exist.
@mrbigglezworth426 ай бұрын
@@robking6367 Arguably between DOOM 2016 and Eternal, 2016 is more likely to last if the map maker is eventually expanded or even opened up to let players make even more with it. Doom has lasted so long because of it's map editor just as much as its gameplay. Eternal doesn't have that, and even worse, railroads players into a very specific kind of play and refuses to allow for much creativity that isn't what the developers originally had in mind.

Doom 64 is definitely my favorite one. Solid game and the first I ever played throughout the classics. Its textures, maps, sci-fi and hellish fellings are simply a way better and evolved version of the classics. The only cons I can see is indeed the lack of some classic enemies, weapon animations and lack of rock/metal soundtracks, with this last one being very debatable since even tho I'm huge advocate for metal music on Doom games, I still appreciate the more eerie, horror feeling that the ambient Doom 64's soundtracks provided. Some of them are extremely creepy asf. Doom 64 is also a big improvement regarding sounds and weapon designs. It has my favorite Plasma Rifle across all Doom games (even the most modern ones) and everything sounds overall better than the Doom 1 and 2. It's a shame the game isn't extensively appreciated by all Doom fans like the rest of the classics.

I have only ever played Evilution and Plutonia with Brutal Doom mods... I assume that makes them significantly harder. My favorite is Plutonia... especially level one... rain? In a Doom game? Nice! I know that's the case regarding Doom, Doom II, and Doom 64. I beat them back when they first came out... and trying them again with Brutal mods felt like a whole new experience! Doom 64 is my favorite Doom game... I just wish they could've included Archviles, Revenants, and Chaingun Zombies, instead of adding "new" variations of Pinkies and Imps... Edit: BRUTAL Plutonia Experiment... it has the axe! Edit 2: I've played "Perdition's Gate", but only with Brutal mods...seems pretty cool, but I haven't played it a ton yet. Maybe give it a try with BRUTAL mods? Anyway, great video dude. Coming from a 42 year old decades long DOOMER! DOOM 3 GETS TOO MUCH HATE!

I know you turned off filtering after someone mentioned it to you, but for anybody else getting into classic doom and brutal doom etc, go into the settings and turn off all texture filtering, you can change the dynamic lighting and stuff like that and blood particles, but when you filter the textures, it looks like Vaseline has been smeared over the screen instead of that lovely crunchiness we all like. Obviously it's up to the player what they do but some folk don't realise they have those filters on.

If you were able to get a bunch of guns and ammo before e2m2 it would utterly ruin the map. The map is designed to teach you how to use berserk, and it relies on giving you extremely limited ammo from the start. You have to tread carefully and isolate as many easy 1on 1 engagements as possible while dodging fireballs. If you even had 50 shotgun shells the level would be trivial and there would be no incentive to explore. On my first play through I found the berserk mechanic so fun I decided to challenge myself and beat the level using only punches. It took me hours of attempts but I eventually got it, and it was really satisfying. The idea of only spawning imps and pinkies, which don’t drop ammo was genius and it may be my favourite level in the original game.

Constructive Criticism: You've got a few too many points that you lifted straight from Civvie, brother. I'm not saying that you can't come to the same conclusions as him, that would be absurd. It's not like Civvie is the first person to ever realize that Plutonia uses hidden Archviles to resurrect Chaingunners forever, or that it has a lot of Revenants, or that Plutonia demonstrates a strong understanding of the monster's abilities and how they can play off each other to challenge the player, but I think you need to try and say it in your own way. Civvie was on my "bedtime" playlist for a good while, so I probably listened to his Doom videos too many times, but I hear _a lot_ of points that are phrased almost identically, or like you wanted to make the same point and just tried to swap out a word or two like how high schoolers do when they're trying to pad out an essay with paragraphs they're stealing from someone else's essay they found online. Not a bad video, and this tendency didn't really register with me until you were about halfway through Doom 2, but it became especially noticeable when you got into Plutonia. I'm guessing that you might have been burning out a bit during the script writing process around this point and maybe weren't proof-reading as thoroughly. You just gotta be careful about stuff like that. Not because I think you did anything that was plagiarism, or anything like that. But mostly because you want to find your own voice and perspective. There's a thousand other people out there that can give people on KZbin a copycat of already-successful channels, which means a lot more competition. But there's only one of your perspective.

Do you actually like that bilinear texture filtering that's destroying the pixel art and covering the image with Vaseline or unaware that you can fix it in display options / texture options. I somewhat disagree about sprinting. The walking speed in-game is similar to real-life sprint speed. I'm a big co-op guy, and sprinting ruins co-op imo as it just turns in to people scrambling around the map looking for keys, not really fighting and working together. Walking is plenty fast enough.

I would love to see the classic Doom 1 "You are here!" map-to-map 'map' or rather map interface. It gave a real sense of adventure and progression (especially in Episode 2 with the Tower construction). Doom 2 having a single static, if slightly disturbing, image between each map just made the game feel like a load of increasingly difficult random maps, leaving the "story" to the intermission text.

You turned off texture filtering for doom 64 but not for doom 1 and 2? Unbelievable
@RayceMonster7 ай бұрын

Somewhat early in the video, but I didn't hear you touch on pistol start which was the intended difficulty level meant by the creators... And then they forgot they let yoy keep weapons between levels. That's when Fortress of Mystery and DIS are actually good levels

Idk the idea of doom 3 having a mixed reception. Many people loved that game back in the day. Its still very much a doom game. But it had to be slower because of hardware limitations
