This is nuts because I’ve been trying to figure out how exactly I’m gonna do pixel concept art for my own game ideas and stuff and this is literally like exactly what I needed. dang, what a really underrated video the youtube algorithm gave me. lessons are extremely clear here also for people who can't make ideas: a good advice i got is this: if you don't feel inspired, you can experiment with already existing ideas and mush them into one you think sounds good. i get my raw ideas from role-playing with rpgs

Where was this video 2 months ago when I got into composition and perspective. I started with perspective first and by did my pantings look boring as hell. Then about 2 weeks ago I finally started looking up composition.... Now playing with it I came to the realization that composition comes first THEN perspective helps bind it to the 3D world. So it's best for me at least to create the composition of the art as it's less intensive to my brain. Then go in and create the perspective of such composition. I was trying to build perspective areas first....THEN populate that perspective with composition. What I realized is for me, this method doesn't work as I am bound by the perspective that I created to make the composition of the painting work. Composition is the most important thing that gets the person invested into the painting. When I was looking up composition I saw paintings captivate me with horrible perspective. This is when I realized my method was wrong. Of course, I only have YT and spare time with few guidance. It's a hit or miss.
@saultoons
@saultoons 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah both composition and perspective are important, I always do composition before perspective as well because I've found similar that no amount of clear perspective can fix a bad composition. Composition is hard too, I've found that watching films and seeing how cinematographers capture scenes has been very useful for that - and thumbnailing is vital to finding the right composition before committing to the piece, and it doesn't even take very much effort, which is nice. Keep at it Ratus, you got this! :D

Hahah yes it’s a bold claim which is mainly for clickbait reasons to be honest, but I do try and put as much effort into the videos so it’s hopefully worthwhile for the viewers 😅 There are some fantastic concept art videos and creators on KZbin who I hope not to take anything away from, as all the information out there is highly valuable! I’m glad you find the video useful, I hope your art learning goes well :D I’d recommend checking out the KZbinrs in the concept art space as well they’re fantastic 😄

12:37 Thanks for saying that. I once posted some RPG portraits that I made from my O.C.s and I used a soft brush and small canvas to make it. It was mosaic/pixelated but at the same time had a soft look into it. I was proud cause I was going for a old realistic paints looking, but at the same time it had this video-game vibe on it. I don't remember the full critic but someone criticized it saying that for pixel art I should go for a solid less gradient look - and somehow I got sad about it and decided that I shouldn't do this anymore for my art. But hearing you say that, even if only for a small detail in your art, made me happy. I think I will try again this "painted pixel art" look - maybe not everyone will like it but now I got an email for them to send their complaints XD. Sorry for the extended comment. :x
@saultoons
@saultoons 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the pixel art community is very passionate, and while there is a huge amount of support in it, I've also heard a lot of stories and seen many instances of gatekeeping. It's a shame really, because it can turn people off the medium, or become intimidated by it. I completely see the perspective that there are certain guidelines for the medium, and effective practises that have been established over a period of time which people recommend, and I do agree that learning these guidelines and practising them will help you understand their effectiveness and the outcome that they produce, so you can learn when you want to use them or not - this is the same in not just pixel art, but digital art, and other traditional mediums. But it's my belief that these are simply guidelines to achieving a particular look or style, and it's an artists right to decide what they want to make, how they want to make it look, and have full decision about what techniques, approaches, or workflows they want to use in achieving that look. If you're trying to achieve a particular look/style then perhaps its best to stick to some guidelines, but experimentation and doing what feels right to you is a very important part of art as well. I often see the question 'does this count as pixel art' when attached to an art piece that deviates from expected practises, and it's exhausting, I'll personally leave the classification of art to the historians, and just enjoy making things, I'm sorry you had that experience as well, I hope you continue to create art that means something to you and is done in the way that you want it to be done :) Don't worry about what other people say, keep doing your thing!

I just started watching this and I already love this video! Hmm how I generate ideas? I often get my illustration ideas by seeing other people's art what get me really inspired to make "that type of level of art" and sometimes even just randomly it just pops into my head in the morning, middle of the day or even as I am about to go to sleep. So in other words my brain coming up with illustration ideas can be really unpredictable since it can happen at any given point.

Silly question: you CAN make the same rays of light without using the brush, right? Like, you can manually adjust the colours and place the pixels with the pencil, and all the brush does is automatically adjust the colours on the edges, right? Another silly question: all (or at least most, up-to-date) software have the same colours, right? I don't know which software you're using, but does, say, Aseprite have the same colour range? Thanks!
@saultoons
@saultoons 2 жыл бұрын
Yes of course, you can do all of these things manually if you'd like, though it may take a while depending on the amount of steps you plan to put in. For your other question, this is an interesting one, I'm not 100% sure but I do know that some art software's use certain 'colour profiles' which can change the way things look for one piece if opened in another software. For example, I know in Photoshop it's possible to change your colour profile, which changes how colours are mapped/displayed. That's the extent of my knowledge though and I haven't looked too much into it other than that, I just use stock stuff :'D

Could you explain your process just a little bit more on how you start your pieces with value instead of color? I'm trying to improve the shapes of my pixel art and something I've started to do is just draw them entirely in black to start with to see how the silhouette comes out. I'd like to see how I can incorporate a bunch of grays in as well if you'd be able to help me out ^^
@saultoons
@saultoons 2 жыл бұрын
The process of starting with black for silhouette is very useful, I use that a lot too. For my value painting process it's fairly simple, I start the thumbnails in black/white only to focus on shapes/composition, then when adding value, I try to limit my values to 2/3 to start with, using only mid-tones, avoiding super light or dark values. For an environment piece like this, I usually break the piece up into planes, foreground, midground, background, and assign a value for each of these planes. The exact value structure depends on what you're going for, but a typical set up is the fg is the darkest, with bg the lightest. Once I'm happy with that, I begin to add more values, ensuring that the value ranges do not mix between planes. For example, I can have highlights + shadows in midground, but those values will not be darker or lighter than the other planes, this is just to continue to keep that fg/mg/bg separation and try to achieve depth. An important thing, is to try to gather reference for the particular set up and study the values as I did in this video, it really helps a lot, as in this piece, the midground had a different value structure than what I'm typically using :) Hope that can help, any other questions let me know. Our discord is full of people you can ask too, feel free to ping me anytime

@@saultoons first of all, thank you for getting back to me and so fast :D Second, I appreciate the advice. I like to keep things simple to going with about 3 values to start with will definitely help me out. Also, I never use mid-tones, I like to make sure shifts in value "matter", "are meaningful" if you know what I mean ^^;. I basically cover a large piece of the spectrum when choosing values, so what you said here is something I'll give a try. Finally, I'm not on discord, but now I'll read on it so I can join yours! Thanks again ^^
@saultoons
@saultoons 2 жыл бұрын
@@kwonsoon7048 Yeah that makes sense. I think my usage of mid-tones is more so that I have the most control over the contrast. When I use a lot of mid-tones to start with, avoiding the high/low values, it does look more muted to begin with, but if I can get a value structure that looks right with mid-tones, I can then start to play with value ranges and putting value contrast in the places that I want to stand out. Hope that makes sense :D

could you ask the some one guest artist (who cant' draw the 2D-traditional art/sketches) to do all the same? So If I want to "control the pixel" I have to pass full course how to draw the 2D and years of practice to step to pixel art? That wasn't true, it is?

@saultoons 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I'm not sure I fully understand your message, but you don't need to do 2D art to transition to pixel art, if that's what you mean. Everyone's path is different, art shares a lot of commonalities between each medium :D

@@saultoons yeah, you've got right, however, the good artists that I met can draw with own hands&pencil. So as I figure out, there're two ways, 1st they could draw before pixel art, 2nd way the translate their knowledge in pixel art to learn traditional draw. For those who can't draw at start, concept things are too difficult (and Jama Jurabaev courses are not very helpful). But I'll continue my tries...

hi Saultoons .. do you know the suikoden 1/2 background ? i mean the house, ground, etc .. im curious how to make them ? is it pure by pixel art or what ? because its look blurry .. (from my theory is we just drawing using brush & make it pixel looks by using tools in photoshop (blur > Pixelate > mosaic (about 4 cell size)) because i feel the background has different type of styles from the character sprites (pixel art) itself .. sorry if my english was bad .. i hope u know what i mean
@saultoons
@saultoons 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Hendy, from what I can see on Google images of Suikoden1/2, in some cases it actually looks like the background is a 3D render with pixel textures, or in some cases just higher res pixel art, whereas the characters are lower res/size pixel art. If you have any specific images you want me to look at, send them on Discord in our community, or direct on social media and I'll take a look

This is Clip Studio Paint but most things shown in the video are also possible in Aseprite. Layer masking isn’t possible afaik, but the workaround is just to duplicate the layer you intend to edit so that you always have the original. Layer modes are possible in Aseprite. Correction layers don’t exist in aseprite but the same correction methods are possible in aseprite by using adjustments menu that will just be applied to all of the currently active layer :)
