Somebody asked me if I was a "Cutter". I had to look that up. A few years ago I made a "Crystal Radio" that ran me several hundred dollars for special parts and wiring so it would be super sensitive and efficient. It must be because it has no power source except for the radio waves it picks up. Anyhow keep it up. You guys are a hoot.

We weren't allowed to even sleep in the tent that was set up in the woods, Mom had to be able to walk back without ducking under branches to the tent. The carpet beetles did a number on the tents screen and canvas. So that ended that idea. I had cleared out a spot back there years before the tent went up. There was a sistern with frogs in it. We used to pour gasoline on top of the water and light it. Thank SeaWorld for that idea. Flames on top of the water. Only difference they used natural gas we used gasoline which was dangerous. 73

I don't understand the fear of lightning rods we had them on our farmhouse. Lighting would strike the one rod on the kitchen chimney. The center of the main part of the house was untouched. You can see black marks on the one rod. We witnessed two strikes at two different times. I guess lightning never strikes twice. LOL the lightning rod company would do an inspection once in a while. Didn't matter who owned the house. It was lifetime inspections. You would hear a ping then a second later comes the big bang noise. Awesome experience because it's from God. 73

Your boat is made to sail downwind only. You need to install a keel. A keel is like an underwater sail. If you can imagine sailing to be similar to you squeezing an ice cube between two fingers. One finger is the wind pushing against the sail. The other finger is the keel pushing against the water. As the two forces push against each other, the ice (your sailboat) gets pushed out and shoots away from you. I'd guess your keel needs to be 3-4 feet submerged underwater and should probably be at least that wide. I'd keep the thickness somewhere around an inch if you are using plywood. If you could come across a sheet of 1/4" steel, it would also help keep your boat upright as a counterbalance too.

Maybe drop the rudder and just use a tiny amount of power to the prop for steerage. The lowest speed you can set it to should give you steerage. Also if you have two sails, one at the front and one at the back you can steer by setting your sales to catch different amounts or air. So you can steer a sailing boat with two ropes from inside the cabin. One to the back sail, and one to the front. If you are planning a sail with some shape rather than just a big square to go downwind, your fastest point of sail would be from the left or right at 90 degrees. This means by setting more power to the rear or front sail, you can change which way the sucker will go. I think the rudder is going to trash your motor mount. But by far the easiest way is to just run the motor at the lowest speed you can (as long as that's faster than your boat is moving.

What's up, guys? I may help you out if you have made any other changes. The daggerboards should not be so long. Tey are for side slipping when you are sailing. You could cut them in half, and you might turn faster. And they should be painted with epoxy paint they don't last long being raw wood. It would be best if you put a rudder on both pontoons to work correctly

@@MoneyPitBoating I dont know, but I just had a look on google images, and a lot of them have downward pointing sides. I'm guessing this would stop air being sucked in from the sides, shroud the prop (better power at low speeds from a ducted prop (maybe)), or perhaps the downward pointing fins stop pressure leakage off to the side if you are using it to raise or lower the back of your boat... ie using it like a wing. When you build pressure under a wing, and low pressure above the wing you create lift. And like those tops on the wings of a plane's wings, a fin might stop some of that pressure bleeding out over the sides. So perhaps they are to attach fins to stop that. But I dont know, that's just a guess. Your holes are in a strange place if that's what they are for. But it would be pretty easy to mount a rudder on them. Just a couple of "L" shaped brackets and a bit of wood. Bolt it down.... or use chewing gum in your boat's case :) My boat looks more like something that fell of the back of a different boat in the movie water world, so that's said out of respect :)

I once planned a pontoon houseboat, but age got to me before it happened, I stripped it to rails, added a slightly shorter pontoon in the center to make a trimaran and put an expensive aluminum deck on it. That is as far as the project got as building more alone would have been difficult with my back and arthritis in most joints. Eventually I sold it and the 85hp motor for two thousand dollars to get it out of the yard. The buyers took it to Arkansas and made a duck blind cabin out of it.

@@MoneyPitBoating Yes, we water skied behind it for several years. We had it for 40 years and I added the 85 hp within a year of getting it. It would go into the 30s mph and you could not see the boat, just a huge spray of water. I put one new wood deck on it, then when it started getting soft 15 years later, I started the build project since we didn't ski anymore.

Very entertaining!!! Reminds me of when me and my buddy built our very first boat when we where like 13…my parents gave us free reign to use as much wood as was around the garage…by the time we got done this thing was 400lbs of fence posts and scrap wood 310lbs of nails and screws…took 6 neighborhood boys and a heavily overloaded red rider wagon…we just barely got it across the street to lake michigan…needless to say it didnt go to well, but the journey was a blast!!! Edit: thanks dad for being a horder!!!❤

If you double the PV, which it looks like there's room for up top, you could run a decently powerful electric boat motor straight from the panels all day long. That seems like a better way to go than the sail, which didn't do a whole lot to move the boat vs. just letting the sun do the work.
@MoneyPitBoating
@MoneyPitBoating Ай бұрын
Doubling the solar would help a ton, and once we hit it big, we'll add more! Adding the sail was all about redundancy in case the motor messes up. It's also just fun to try new stuff out! thanks for watching!

I like the project and it looks like you guys had a lot of fun with it, one thing that I did notice is you are using a bluesea battery switch on a 48v system and those switches are rated for only for up to 24v systems, midnite mndc makes great high volt high amp breakers that can be used as a battery switch.
@MoneyPitBoating

Thanks for watching and the product suggestion! The switch we're using is the 48 volt version (Affiliate link below). www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MMC914?th=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=moneypitboa05-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=aa647c20f126f69a664e2e83c8d2be94&camp=1789&creative=9325 It has worked well so far, but we're always looking for ways to improve!

Need a turnbuckle.for the main guy line/ wire.& wrap the eye the line goes through & the line together with flexy tape thats safe with electrical power in case of lightning or power lines . A pair of turnbuckles with a D ring link between could work but a ... Caribiner might work temp. ? For emerg. mast lowering . Oh!! A pivot pin! Sail kinda blocks the panels light, maybe lol it needs to be made of that fabric that you can get a tan right through! Lol( if that ability isn't simply a factor of tiny perforations in the cloth which would render it less effective as a sail )

You cant freeze fully charged lead acid batteries. Just to know ;) The chemistry inside does not freeze like water. " A fully charged battery should not freeze until about -94°F (-70°C). A battery that is at about 50% DOD will freeze around -13°F (-25°C), and at a 75% DOD it will freeze at about 9°F (-13°C)"
