The West really was this brutal. There were Indian tribes that practiced cannibalism, during the colonial period as well as the Westward expansion. It just isn't spoken about because it's not politically correct, and runs counter to the prevailing narrative. Some reviewers have called this movie racist. It's not. It's courageous for unflinchingly depicting how dark and brutal the West could be. After the Battle of the Little Big Horn (Greasy Grass), the Sioux women dismembered the dead cavalrymen, to disable them in the afterlife. It was also common for some tribes to eat the hearts of their vanquished enemies.

This movie was a huge pleasant surprise for me when I saw it, I knew nothing about it, but every detail is fantastically executed. Like you often mention, the dialog is so unique but effective, it almost deserves its own classification: something like "theatrical realism," because all the lines of dialog are delivered like you're watching a stage play, but it all takes place in a brutally real wild-west setting.

Similar atmosphere is the remake of “3:10 to Yuma” . A western where a captured outlaw, Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), must be brought to stand trial. So a rancher (Christian Bale) who’s been unable to make much money and support his family (which clearly weighs heavily on him) due to weather etc, takes the dangerous job of escorting Wade to the train that will bring him to the courthouse in Yuma. Wade’s crew are privy to the route they’re taking and are hell bent on springing him. As the story progresses, both the rancher and the outlaw start finding a new respect for each other…which gives this typical western yarn a twist you dont see coming. Its a great slow burn with fantastic acting and a. superb supporting role played by the underrated Ben Foster.

One of his better movies, he's not quite as good as he was in Death-Proof but that's just down to the directors. Tarantino will always get the best performance, and that's in no way a bad thing...
