Rupert has said that the ultimate prayer and the highest form of meditation is to fall asleep whilst remaining awake. What does that mean?
Rupert explains that when you fall asleep it’s effortless. You don't do anything to fall asleep. On the contrary, you stop doing anything. Just do that, but remain awake. In the waking state, there are perceptions, sensations, thoughts and images. In the dream state, there are just thoughts and images. In deep sleep, there's just the awareness of being.
It's like like undressing - you take off all the layers of experience and all that's left is naked being. So, let go of thoughts, feelings, sensations, perceptions, images, activities, and relationships, but remain awake.

I admire this woman, a long time meditator with real questions, I'm sure she's heard every explanation from people who imply they've never had these issues.
@uau_lena

I am really sorry for the experience this woman has there. She is actually asking a very interesting and valid question and the man is not answering on a level from where she asked from. It seems that he is not connected to her and goes into his own world. She falls asleep because her nervous system is not yet able to be with the amount of energy of being fully aware. She disconnects because she gets overwhelmed. It is a natural reaction. If she would like to be able to stay aware and connect to the moment she needs to grow her capacity of being with energy. This you can do by learning nervous system regulation.

So you’re saying it’s the same vibe as when people are connected and get afraid bc of how strong and unusual the flow is?
@uau_lena
@uau_lena 2 ай бұрын
Yes. The nervous system gets used to a certain amount of energy flow in the body. If we are tense and holding stuff inside, there is less flow of energy. When we make an experience that makes us feel save, seen and connected usually relaxation comes with it. Through the relaxation, more energy can flow but the nervous system needs time to feel save with the new sensations in the body.

My dears , I see you and the guest also did not catch what Rupert did there... You are givin an apparently biological explenation , actually Rupert went directly to the source of the issue, you are basically saying that that the sun should have turned around the earth to make the earth understand it Is round... You cannot have the experience of "dropping in" if you are really aware, that Is the point . Energy does not enter the equation you can be aware while dying and if you are before Is Better, actually you cannot die that way :)

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj also addressed this in “I Am That.” The passage reads: “We do not wake up into a really waking state. In the waking state the world emerges due to ignorance and takes one into a waking-dream state. Both sleep and waking are misnomers. We are only dreaming. True waking and true sleeping only the gnani knows. We dream that we are awake, we dream that we are asleep.” I Am dreaming right now that the character Art Russell has just typed a comment. Sending loving compassion to you, Rupert, for all the good work that is occurring through your apparent form. 🙏

So was Rupert was saying in the class that some people were sleeping did he mean they were aware they were sleeping or just sleeping. I have also went to sleep while being aware but as far as I know I was not aware I was sleeping. I would just wake up and maybe fall back to sleep. Thanks for any truth you may be able to give.

@@irenemagill4890 Hello Irene. "To be alseep" to our true Self (or essential nature as Spirit) is still to believe that we are the "person." I know that sounds quite bizarrer; but it's easier to understand when we compare the dream state (usually at night) in which "persons" and events and circumstances are also experienced. We rarely give this any thought in the morning when we "believe" that we arise as "persons in the morning. But if we contemplate this even briefly, we realize that they had to be made of Consciousness. There were no "real" persons in the dream, even though it certainly seemed to be the case during the dream. Our conditioning is SO prevalent and strong that it seems impossible to believe that Infinite Living Mind (which dreamed the events in the night time dreams) could also be responsible for dreaming the events in the waking state, which the majority of beings believe are taking place by automous human begins. To put this in perspective, "this" right now is taking place due to the activity of Infinite Living Mind. This is alluded to in scripture: Acts: 17:28: For in Him we live and move and have our being. In a book entitled "The Law of Success," by Paramahansa Yogananda, he wrote: "The mind is the creator of everything." I hope you have found this information helpful. I honour the greatness that is YOU. 🙏🏻

I actually do this at night while meditating in bed. I know that I am or body is or mind is asleep, yet my awareness is still there awake. I can actually listen to myself snore while observing this. It is so relaxing and comfortable and peaceful. Usually happens around 1 -3 AM after I use the restroom then go back to bed YET if I can’t sleep I meditate in bed. ✌️ ❤️ Oneness

To the lady who keeps falling asleep, you are most likely trying to meditate (stay in awareness) with your eyes closed. Keep your eyes open while meditating, then become the observer of the world, feelings, thoughts and perceptions. Slowly you will merge with the world in awareness … but remain there with your eyes open. 😊

I have heard this expounded at the feet of the guru in the Himalayas, and it sounded mystical, only attainable by the fortunate few. We were exploring the ancient texts of the Upanishads, Vedas, Yoga Sutras. And, comes along Rupert in a few minutes with deep love, compassion and reverence for his students, he displays the meaning with such utter simplicity and allows you to realize you already have what you were seeking. Extraordinary human being is Rupert Spira. He should be “knighted” in his country for his brilliant contributions to human consciousness.

I think what Rupert Spira means is that during what we call "sleep," the body and mind can be asleep but the spiritual being is awake and aware. This is a Tibetan Buddhist practice called "Yogic Sleep" or "Yoga Nidra."

As Patanjali tells in the Yoga Sutras, Meditation on the breath is the most powerful and passed down from Himalayas, when we speak about dropping in, when Meditating on the breath, it eventually disappears and self realisation in pure connection to consciousness happens, the body vanishes, and we are connected to consciousness. Meditating on the breath with a Sound bowl and voice of an enlightened Guru is most special. Prior to Meditation if one listens to a Dharana and moves into Meditation is even more special..

Happened to me twice during meditation in February of 2023 during meditation. Just dropped into a state of pure bliss and ecstacy. There was no world and senses, but I was awake. Was so shaken by experiences that followed that I stopped meditating for months. After learning what had happened I returned to meditation, but, now when I sense it about to happen I just become hyper alert and the mind snaps awake.

@@andrewmc147 yes. I think so too. It starts of as a sort or recognizing that it's beginning to happen then my mind sort of stops and returns to normal. When it first happened I wasn't expecting anything. Also, there were some intense experiences regarding entities etc. after the first time. So although I've moved past it and understand it, it's like the body is expecting a jump scare or something. But I don't have any concious expectation or goals during meditation but there's a sort of overpowering curiosity and/or sudden alertness that happens when I sense reality falling away. But you're right, I have to let go of the mind's perceived experience of what happened. My mind is treating it like an experience probably because of me associating it to the waking experiences I had outside of meditation.

I can relate exactly. I’ve had a good number of instances of dropping into this state - but only for a moment or two - and then “snapping out of it”, out of I think fear. I’ve at times literally exclaimed “what was that!!?!?” right after it happening. Now, I find that it’s often in the back of my mind, wanting to recreate that “experience” - which doesn’t work. Best way for me to get there is to stop buying into any and every thought. 100%, drop interest in every thought, and become wholly disinterested in the thinking sense door. Then, the same for all senses and perceptions. Ignore everything. Still haven’t managed to fully inhabit that space less space, but even getting closer to it is immensely fulfilling.
@bullpuppy7455
@bullpuppy7455 4 ай бұрын
@@SuitedPup Having experienced this multiple times myself, and having experimented with 'how to get back', one thing I've discovered that helps me is to stare at the back of my eyelids. In other words, focus directly on the blackness that would otherwise be images shining into my eyes. This seems to disconnect me from the stray thoughts that would otherwise capture my brains attention and keep me from returning to that state. By doing this I tend to drop into that blissful state a lot faster. Actively listening to the sounds, pops, creaks, crackles, air conditioner, the hum of the refrigerator, or anything else outside my physical body also tends to help as well, because it takes me away from listening to my internal thoughts. If you get a chance to try this out I would love to know if this works for you as well. Additionally, as I begin to notice myself approaching that state, I now seem to have this "Here it comes!" mentality that almost feels like riding a roller coaster. That point where you are nearing the top and are about to go over that first drop where you 'hold on tight!'. I do that with this state, anticipating its arrival, and trying to hold to it for as long as I can make it last. In reality I'm not doing anything in particular, other that expecting the experience and remaining focused on it, rather than letting it happen to me unexpectedly and then snapping out of it fearfully (which is sort of like that feeling when you are falling asleep, but suddenly awaken from a sense of falling).

If we look at thoughts as objects external to us, that is, not ‘owned’ by us, clinging ends, stagnation ends. We then are, as awareness self-aware, sans thought, in silence, in stillness. First, to be as such in the waking state and then in the dream state (both are in duality), we shift into deep sleep (singularity). To be awake there in the bardo, so to speak, effortlessly, we slowly embody ‘the night of Brahman’ into our active moment to moment awareness, in the waking state.

Meditation or transcending the ego is in reality creating an empty ego which just observes the other ego filled with experiences and memories... This void ego is completely in the present moment as it has no past memories and its connection with the bodily senses is just like when in a dream which does not bring actual motion but action just inside the mind inside the filled ego... Dream is the filled ego on autopilot with the void ego as observer... Its not any worship but hallucinating... A drug like experience...

It is a dropping of the senses similar to being asleep. Almaas offers a more rational approach to the same phenomenon. He calls it "cessation". maybe this information is useful for this woman. It might also just be the case that she only falls asleep.

Everyone needs deep sleep to re-charge. What this means is that you need to meditate by being conscious/mind awake while your body sleeps. This just takes practice as your mind would normally fall asleep when you go to physically sleep. Have 6 hours sleep then try 30mins of meditation daily.

What can i do to improve the situation of mine and how to better my situation

I think it may be about beliefs as “I need sleep” try questioning them and relaxing your persistence. Dreams are there to clear your mind of chatter not to rest the body (it rests in relaxation) that’s why the more you meditate and the less resistance thoughts you have the less sleep you require

I hear you. The best pointer I can give you is to start over and over staying in the moment. Try different forms of meditation. When you are paying the bills, just pay the bills. Watch the feelings come and go like clouds in the sky. If it was a redundant question please excuse my intrusion if I over shared. May you be happy May you be healthy May you be peaceful May you be free of suffering 🙏 May

WHAT THE FUCK. This would mean that we could consciously choose where to identify ourselves with. He literally made me jump from being an emotion to being a thought to being an awareness. Maybe all the manifestation trend we see just means the act of identifying with the though and emotion we desire, and that is what awareness becomes aware of. What the fuck

Body asleep, mind awake. Focus your mind on putting your body to sleep. If you've had a big sleep the night before your mind will still be awake and conscious. You will hear your body snoring. You will be able to turn your hearing on and off, or zoom in and out of your perceptions. Its a subtle place. requires lots of rest and consistent practice.

@@sofifl Yess, it's just watching your body fall asleep, and you let go of the story of this character and everything else , just be aware of being. :) Letting go of the labels shows you how there is actually nothing there that is not you. You can be aware while your body is alseep, you just keep observing what's happening and stay aware of just being :) When you see this, you don't have an issue anymore The problem is that you can't stay focus ? If that's the case well as I said it's just observing and reminding yourself that you are just witnessing, you are not the one falling asleep. If you still can't well it doesn't matter really, you don't need this

@irenemagill4890 perhaps. For me I can even have little dreams in this meditative state. It's kinda like passing out and sometimes my head will nod too. But I don't know how to meditate other than this because this happens literally every time.

Consciousness is ever-present. An error in thinking, I believe, is when we assume that because we do not remember times of unconsciousness (deep sleep, anaesthesia) we assume consciousness/awareness was not there. I believe this is a false assumption, and in truth we have nearly forgotten those experiences, as we do do many others.

I can empathize with the questioner. It may be helpful to do this practice in a comfortable chair and not a bed. I did this practice on a long late night flight once and opened my eyes to find a young teenager asleep on my shoulder much to my surprise and much to hers and her parents later as we left the plane. Awkward.

I think he clearly did understand her. Nissagarta Maharaja said in order to become anything first you have to be. Rupert is 👉 pointing to her beingness which is prior to her thinking mind and experiences. We are prior to our acquired and codifioned earthly identities. In Zen Buddhism, the mind without the mind is the highest beingness. This is why children understand beingness better than adults.

The mind has it backwards. “Sleep” is the absence of mind - that is, thought and perception - not the absence of consciousness. From the perspective of the mind, which is the flow of thinking and perceiving, “sleep” is believed to be unconsciousness because the mind equates itself with consciousness, with wakefulness, when really it is the mind itself which is a kind of sleep or dreaming. Therefore, when the mind has been absent, arises again, and through memory recognises a break in the continuity of thought and perception it thinks that consciousness disappeared. It was the other way around. The mind disappeared and it’s source, consciousness, remained present. From the perspective of consciousness itself, what the mind calls “deep sleep” is to be FULLY awake without dreaming, for the dreaming and waking states - thought and perception - are a kind of dream activity appearing within the wakefulness which pervades and substantiates them. Consciousness never falls asleep, it is always wide awake. Ultimately, what the mind calls waking, dreaming and sleeping are, in fact, arbitrary labels for pure consciousness. No matter what does or does not appear, there is ONLY consciousness itself.

@@divinenonbinary Hiya Divine, happy to clarify. I am not saying that falling asleep makes people aware of themselves. I am saying that sleep is the absence of mind and senses (thinking and perceiving), but not the absence of awareness (being). Awareness is not the property of a person, nor does it need to be made aware of itself - awareness is innately self-aware simply by being awareness itself.
