Jeff, nice review of this unit! I know from the live shows (which I usually catch the next day) how much you love these things. :) I really like the new design of the 3, and the controls improvements. That said, ehh... not sure the price is something I could stomach for the use I'd get. :) I wanted to lead with that because you have, as usual, great content in this video and a great overview of this device. I like the performance tests. Though, I want to offer a constructive tip without being "that comment" and just seen as nitpicky or complaining. I truly mean no offense, love your videos, and realize they cost me nothing. So thank you! :) With your videos, you are sliding into your "TV Newscaster" voice, but have developed a predictive speech habit that is a type of High Rising Terminal, aka Upspeak. To most folks, this is noticeable, and for some folks, this is incredibly difficult to listen to, especially at a high speech rate. The most common form of this is derived from "valleyspeak" and involves an upward intonation or pitch toward the end of a sentence making it sound like a question. In this case, however, your final syllabic sound has a rollercoaster-like bump with almost every complete sentence. There are a few parts of this video when you are more casually speaking and not doing this quite so emphatically. ( 8:52 - 8:59 ) Many others, though, it's largely present. In newscasting speech, this would be referred to as either a form of upspeak, and/or a sing-song pitch pattern. I don't know if this is useful or if you care, and I know it isn’t a huge deal. I'll spare any additional speech nerd details. :) As someone particularly sensitive to this, I just thought I would share--I'd want to know! Thanks Jeff, looking forward to more videos! 😊

Bonus on 720P screens - as we get older, its harder to deal with hi res small size screens. Pixel density rising and rising doesn't help once the mk1 eyeball starts to get on a bit. Besides, 1080P up on a 5.5 gets real hard work even if you have good eyes.

I came ridiculously close to ordering one of these but the keyboard decision left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth as one of my main use cases for this type of device would be some older PC games on the go as my 3ds and Vita meet most my non-PC related gaming need when I go out. Mostly because well I do have a thing about playing a ton of traditional rogue likes and a devices like the GPD Win line fit that bill ridiculously well.

I wish more games were designed as well as Hitman. It runs so damn well, even my 10 year old machine can handle it at max, 2560x1080. As for the GPD Win 3, I actually really like what they did. The design break was great, having a hidden keyboard that only needs to take up space when needed was a great design choice, and the hardware holds up much better than I'd honestly expect. They have a super solid foundation now, so I'll be keeping an eye on where this goes in the future. If they could get some backing from someone like Steam, that could end up being amazing. Anyone who could help with production and cut those costs would be huge, as lower the cost to make it more consumer friendly, as well as allowing more headroom for higher end parts without breaking the bank are really important. Regardless, they've done a pretty phenomenal job. I think durability/longevity of the device is the only thing left to look at, and as long as it holds up well, this is a solid win, and hopefully they can really take off.

Been eyeing on it for a while, but decided not to buy it for the following reasons: 1. No physical KB and touch KB is 3 key only, meaning CTRL+ALT+DEL is not possible (DEL requires FN). 2. No second TBT port, nor the stand supports TBT, meaning if I use the stand, I will lose TBT connectivity, meaning 2x 4K output is not possible (I don't want a portable gaming machine, I want a portable workhorse with good office dockablity). 3. Screen is not very vivid, and has huge bezels. I will seriously consider it if it has a 6 inch screen so I can try using it as 100% scaling, and has a working keyboard, be it a physical one or a well implemented touch one. Also the rumble is too strong. This is not a toy for my girlfriend.

That keyboard and controller button placement are deal breakers, not to mention the price and screen size. Better keyboard, better controller button placement, larger screen(7" or 8") and MUCH lower price($400) and this would be a much more appealing offering. Yes, I know the price-point means lesser specs, but I'm willing to live with that. I mean really GPD, do you actually want to sell your product and get it into peoples hands? Or do you want to make a thrashing game system that's hard to use? In these economic times, few can afford $500, let alone $1000 or $1500.

😕That's strange for it not to be more playable with keypad games. Considering what I heard from Phawx that the awsd keys are programmed into the left thumb stick when you switch to mouse control set up. Plus I thought the game pad would be comfortable on the lower left. As that is how every other gaming portable places them as well. Including the Switch.
@CraftComputing3 жыл бұрын
I mentioned the mouse/keyboard emulator mode, but didn't expand on it. Yes, in Mouse Mode, the controller emulates mouse movements and keyboard presses. My comment was more aimed at the touch keyboard not being usable for gameplay. And the D-Pad is uncomfortable because there is so little space between it and the side of the device, there's just not much to hold on to there. The Switch works because it's wider, with more area to grip (at least IMO).
