Thank you so muck Reece Geofroy! after watching your channel a year or two ago I was inspired to start learning how to make games with pixel art and have been slowly honing my skills using game development. Just a week ago I started to learn how to program with unity and am learning how to make Metroidvanias. You have been an inspiration to me, and I just want you to know how grateful I am for you and your channel being a big inspiration along the way, Thank you again!

I've used Game Maker for a little over 7 years just messing around making platformer games and testing around with stuff. I'm pretty much fluent in GML but my biggest issue is whenever I try to make an actual game, it turns into a mess of a billion scripts and variables and objects. So I installed Godot today to see if what people say about it lives up to the hype. And I have to say I immediately fell in love with it, I don't know a single thing about programming languages outside of GML so I have a long way to go before I actually make anything competent in it yet, but I managed to make a simple 3d platformer within my first day(which is miles more than what you can do with 3D in game maker just at all). But it made me realise that a different programming language isn't as big of a bottleneck as it first seems. All programming languages do the same stuff, it's just glorified problem solving, just worded a little differently. Basically what I'm trying to say is, even if you're comfortable using a game engine and it's the one you've used for ages, try switching game engines and experiment, because you'll never know what features you've been needing in your life that you haven't had access to unless you look around
@Gbtx63 жыл бұрын
I agree with pretty much everything you've said except the million scripts part. That's no longer the case since user defined functions were added in and scripts were changed drastically to prevent the script piling up madness.
@daaaaaaanny3 жыл бұрын
@@Gbtx6 yeah that's definitely helped it an insane amount, but it's more my own messy method of doing things added with the way game maker is which caused it to turn into a complete mess for me. Even with my chaotic, nonsensical ways of doing stuff Godot is a lot better at staying clean
@Gbtx63 жыл бұрын
@@daaaaaaanny yeah, I've used Godot and there are far too many things I love more than Gamemaker. I just love how fast you can whip out stuff in GM.

@@Gbtx6 yeah game maker is really good for quick and easy projects but if you wanna go bigger it becomes a lot of work

I would say unreal engine is a good one for those that know they can learn quickly. Like you said, UE has a ton of incredible features and you can do basically anything with it, but the real pro is the community. There are countless tutorials for UE that provide the basis anybody needs to start developing. Certain new features in UE5 also make it easier for a new developer to make a more professional looking game(I.e. Lumen) but like you said, it doesn't really matter anyway. Just pick one and stick with it for a while
@tauheedgamedev23883 жыл бұрын
Great advise in the video, I personally started with unity but recently started learning Godot and I think it doesn't matter too much what engine you start with as a lot of the logic side of making games is the hardest part and learning to use a game engine or a programming language is a lot easier and will get even easier over time.

Have you ever played Azure Dreams on PS1? Everytime I see your monster game I think of that game, if you haven't I recommend checking it out, it's a turn-based roguelike monster trainer where you climb a tower of randomly-generated floors, and defeat means getting thrown back to the bottom. Outside the tower you can raise and train companion monsters, and indulge in some limited life sim stuff.

"almost half a decade ago." I find that so funny, maybe because I'm old. As he was saying it, In my mind I thinking, 'I made games like that almost half a century ago,' then he says "decade" and I think, 'so like yesterday' and it made me laugh. And with a laugh is always a good way to start a video.

@@tomotale5085 I said *_"almost half_* a century ago." Half a century is 50 years. I started programming in about 1980 with BASIC and Pascal, then moved to C a few years later. I'd say that 40(ish) years ago counts as almost half a century ago.

I would say that "living hell for 2 years" is a MASSIVE exaggeration for going engineless. Game frameworks are getting more and more easy to use. If you are using a higher-level framework, like raylib or XNA, it won't take long for a simple game to be created. If you use a super low-level API or framework, like OpenGL, and you're starting, yes, I agree. But different frameworks give varying levels of control.
@AAA-wq4sm3 жыл бұрын
What if you make your own framework?
@lonelyfloat25823 жыл бұрын
@@AAA-wq4sm You mean building off of an API e.g. OpenGL? Nobody makes a framework completely from scratch, as it's absurdly impractical. Even if you enjoy super low-level issues, the lowest you'd want to go is the Vulcan API.
